Mountain St., in Kernersville. Dinner starts at 6:00 PM and the business part of the meeting will start at 7:00 PM. Don t forget to invite and/or bring your antique/classic vehicle friend(s) with you for a fun evening! See ya Tuesday for some great food, fun, and fellowship! Message from the President Happy September! I cannot believe that the year is moving on so quickly. The OSC has been busy as usual for this time of the year and activities are continuing at a fast pace.. We missed the August meeting while we were in Flat Rock for the Great Smoky Mountain Region s Divisional Tour. Thank you, Ron, for conducting the meeting.. We were in the mountains for a church camp gathering over Labor Day Weekend, so we missed Gurney s mountain outing. Let it be said, though, that some of you were spotted driving up Highway 421 on Saturday by some of our church folks who were headed up to camp. We were told that everybody in the old cars looked like they were having a good time. We were at Shatley Springs the day after you and we thank you for leaving us some food. Those of us who were at Clarence s for the potluck and movie night on Sept 6 th had a beautiful outdoor setting for our meal. Thank you, Clarence. It couldn t have been nicer! John prevailed in spite of some technical challenges and we all enjoyed the movie, The Ultimate Gift. It set the stage for our viewing of The Ultimate Life which a number of us saw at the Wynnsong Theater on Sunday. Both are great movies and if you missed them, I hope you will have a chance to see them later. We all have our fingers crossed for good weather for the September Kernersville Cruise-in. Ruth Ann has worked hard to make it a special event to celebrate the OSC s participation in the making of The Ultimate Life. As I write this on September 11 th, I would like to say that today my family has remembered that terrible day in 2001 when we thought the whole world had gone crazy. This morning we attended a special program on the grounds of the school which our granddaughter attends. At the end of the program each child released red, white and blue balloons in memory of those who lost their lives. During the day, there were discussions about where we were and how we were feeling as the events unfolded. I am sure that you have also remembered this day in your own way. Please remember our next meeting on September 17 th at the Olympic Restaurant. As usual, please plan on eating at 6:00. We will begin our business meeting promptly at 7:00. Until then, Don t forget Bring PASTA for Second Harvest AND ALUMINUM CANS to our meeting! Also bring your OLD CAR MAGAZINES, too, for the prison ministry collection! Throw the ALUMINUM CANS and CAR MAGAZINES in the back of John Ronchetti s Petty blue El Camino before you come in and bring the FOOD DONATIONS inside with you! THANKS! 1

4 HEAD FOR THE HILLS! AACA SOUTHEASTERN DIVISIONAL TOUR By Brenda Hockaday On Sunday afternoon, August 18th, Roger and I headed west on I-40 to Flat Rock, NC. We were driving our 1972 Corvette to participate in the 2013 Southeastern Divisional Tour hosted by the Great Smoky Mountains Region. We arrived at the beautiful Mountain Lodge which served as the host motel around 4:30 PM, in plenty of time to check in, visit with friends and attend the Driver s Meeting at 6:30 PM. Lee and Nancy Mauldin from the Old Salem Chapter were also there. Unfortunately, the weather was not favorable on Monday morning. Between 8:00 and 9:00 AM when everyone was preparing to leave the motel for our day of touring, the rain was coming down in buckets! The early part of the Monday tour was to take place on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Most of the participants followed the complete tour route, but we decided that we had seen better days on the Parkway, so we headed down Highway 26 to Asheville, which was the tour destination for late morning until the end of the day. The Thomas Wolfe House The Thomas Wolfe House Rain, rain and more rain! Traffic was heavy and fast on the highway as we crept along, wiping the windshield in order for Roger to have a small hole to see through. By the time we arrived in Asheville, the rain had stopped and the rest of the day was rain free. We had not been in downtown Asheville in a while, so we thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the town by the Historic Greyline Trolley. We were able to hop on and off the trolley as we wanted. Interesting sights in downtown Asheville included the Thomas Wolfe House and Museum, the Flat Iron Building, the River Arts District, Biltmore Village, the Grove Park Inn and many more. We noticed that there is quite a bit of new development in Asheville that appears to be medical centers. It is our guess that growth in the medical field there is a result of the retiree population. Asheville has been named as one of the top 10 places to retire in the U.S. On Monday evening, everyone enjoyed a pizza party at the Host Motel. We started out at 8:00 AM on Tuesday morning with much better weather for a pretty drive through Saluda, NC and Landrum, SC. For our coffee break that morning, we re-entered NC for a visit to the Green River Plantation near Rutherfordton. We enjoyed a guided tour of the mansion by members of the family who have owned the plantation since The house has 42 rooms on four levels and was the largest single residence in the country until the Biltmore House was completed. The original part of the house was built from and the remaining sections were completed in The house is beautifully furnished in period antiques all owned by Ms. Cantrell, the current owner. Strange happenings occur from time to time in the house. Items get moved or disappear from time to time, only to show up later. The owners are certain that a friendly ghost shares their home. Our next stop was the Bennett Classic Car Museum, winner of the 2012 AACA Museum Award. The museum is a hidden treasure Bennett Classic Car Museum 4

5 in the little town of Forest City, which has been known since World War II as Little Detroit. From the museum, we drove to the Carolina Event and Conference Center, where we were served a delicious box lunch in the banquet room. After lunch everybody was anxious to move on to Lake Lure and Chimney Rock State Park. We enjoyed the boat tour of the lake. Our guide was very knowledgeable of the history of the lake, pointing out the site where the movie, Dirty Dancing was made, the first home built on the lake and many other interesting facts about some of the homes there. After the boat tour, we drove up the beautiful, winding road to Chimney Rock State Park. The view from the parking lot is beautiful. We DID NOT go to the summit. I am afraid of heights and since I ve been there once, hanging on to Roger for dear life, I didn t feel the need to repeat that experience. On Wednesday morning, we drove on scenic back roads through beautiful farmland. The apple orchards appear to have abundant crops this year Chevy Sedan in parking lot of Chimney Rock State Park owned by Tom Getz We passed the Historic Flat Rock Playhouse, the State Theater of NC and the former home of Carl Sandburg, famous author and poet. Our coffee stop was in Brevard, a small town known for the Brevard Music Center. For old time s sake, we drove through the campus of my alma mater, Brevard College, where I was a student many years ago. Box lunches were provided at Pisgah Inn on the Parkway, then the tour route took us down Route 276 where we passed the Cradle of Forestry, Looking Glass Falls and Sliding Rock. The tour continued through country roads to Hendersonville where everyone enjoyed free time in the charming downtown area. There are many shops and stores that we all enjoyed and plenty of sidewalk tables and benches. The Closing Banquet on Wednesday Night was at the Blue Ridge Community College, just a short distance from the host motel. We enjoyed this mountain tour and even though we had some rain, everyone took it in stride. As a positive, the temperatures were very mild and kind to those drivers who do not have air conditioning. It is always good to see people that we have met on other tours. People are still talking about our Ghost and Legends Tour. One person asked if I had the ghost! GREAT NEWS -- WE CAN GET THE AQUA SHIRTS AGAIN! David Hawks has informed me that the aqua shirts are still available. The price of the shirts will be $28 each, long or short sleeve. Jackets will be $41 and caps are $12. Order sheets follow. Contact Joe Huygens to order shirts, etc. 5
