DIRECTOR S CORNER Hello Stingers! Family, all is well in the HIVE, and we have REALLY FLOURISHED throughout the year. I am running my mouth in this article so grab yourself a cup of tea, recline that lazy boy and here we go! Toni and I started Wing Ding approximately three days earlier than anyone else, I had to do some preliminary maintenance on the cruiser by replacing some spark plugs, changing the oil and getting some new tires installed. 28 June; We (Bruce Hill, Kirk Williams, Richard 4/10 Blake, Lillian Cruz, Frank & Karen Monroe, Stan & Shelly Greene) all met up at RIPS with smiling faces and full of excitement. Lillian decided on her way to RIPS that she did not want the community to look after her house while she was gone so she hooked a U-turn back to her house and LOCKED her doors. We were happy to see Daryl and Karyn Wills at RIP s hanging out with the family, for a moment I thought they were going to get on the road with us but come to find out they had their own agenda that day with a trip to Paris kicking off at 8pm. We got jealous for a HOT HOT moment and then reality set in and it was all about putting the horses on the road. Family, the weather was perfect for our first leg of the trip, we had seven bikes on the road and one vehicle (which played a vital role in our travels) with nothing but open highway and spectacular views as we made our way north. We rode hard that day putting in over 11 hours as we made our way to Canada (Niagara Falls) in one day. We found a place to park along the Niagara Falls route that seemed to be a 2 mile walk back in the opposite direction and then having to turn around and walk back. Frank tried to persuade a bus driver for a ride back to the bikes but we had no such luck. We had a little situation in finding a hotel over there, come to find out, it was a popular weekend for weddings in Canada and all the hotels within the local area were full to capacity but by midnight it all worked out in our favor and we all were at rest. 3 Continued from page one Excited Chapter B members getting ready to head out to Wing Ding 29 June; We got started around 9am (with prayer) and had a pleasant ride heading to Detroit Michigan and we arrived there comfortably around 5 o clock in the evening for a well deserved dinner and rest considering how hard we rode the previous day. Richard had a dish with some topping that was not looking too pleasing to his eye so Karen agreed to be the official taste tester for the group (bad idea), her facial expression was priceless and no words needed to be said, she immediately gave up her position as the official taste tester (too funny). 30 June; We had an early morning start and we made our way down to visit the historic Motown. Unfortunately it was closed but we still took the opportunity to have a photo session and put together a Stinger video performing, our awesome rendition of the OJ s (don t trip, admire the coordination), I think I saw a few cars stop to take in that performance, also I (Eddie Cain) even had a solo performance at the end that I am trying to get distributed to some producers for further evaluation because I THINK a star was born with that solo performance, nobody else gave it a second thought, you be the judge (the video will be posted on the web soon). Our travelers take a break from the road 3

A brand new group looks to be signed by MOTOWN!! Aaron and the road riders pose in front of the legendary studio during a stop on the way to Wing Ding. I m told their audition went well except the group almost immediately broke up when it was discovered that Aaron Cain had changed his name to Eddie and was seeking a solo deal. His agent, Toni Cain had a no comment on Mr. Cain s future involvement with the road riders. I think the entire idea was tabled in order to continue the ride. After Motown we cruised on down to our next destination Hard Core Pawn (it s a TV series, pictures on the web), I think that stop was put on the schedule by Frank and I (yes, I got the T-Shirt), as Frank and I were like kids in a candy store (ok we don t get out much!) We all looked around and purchased some items here and there before the first of the three series stars we wanted to see (Less, the store owner) came walking in and headed to the back. The staff let him know we were there for a photo session and they advised us that he would be out shortly. Seth (son) must to have wondered in through the back door because I don t remember him arriving but he went to the back also, Ashley (daughter) was off that day. Less finally made it out and I greeted him with a handshake and wanted to question why he had us waiting for so long but looking at his bodyguard made me think twice and Bruce was looking a little tired massaging his knee. We had a great photo session (pictures on the web) and as I focused on Bruce and the bodyguard getting ready to take a picture, I was amazed that he was looking someone eye to eye, it was a KODAK moment. Once we got outside (where Kirk was watching the bikes) it seemed like he had some excitement of his own watching drivers maneuver in the parking lot and getting the general question are these bikes for sale?. Shortly afterwards we were off and cruising to our next destination. We got on the road and enjoyed the good riding weather before visiting the Jackson Family Home in Gary Indiana. Toni and I had never been there before and we were amazed by how small the house was and it was under construction (building a museum). There was a lady sitting across the street that was intrigued by the motorcycles and Stan s music, she asked where we were from and I replied Maryland and she immediately responded by YOU ALL ARE CRAZY, I didn t know how to take that so I just nodded my head and backed away (slowly). Continued on the next page.. 4

Cont. We took plenty of pictures and they are on the website as well. Afterwards we started our travels towards Madison Wisconsin and along the way we noticed that a severe storm was in our traveling path and eventually we would have to pull over and take cover. We took in the good riding weather as much as possible with our eyes glued to the Garmins (radar feature) and then several hours down the road the skies started turning dark gray which was the signal to find a hotel fast. We pulled over as Stan made reservations for us all. We made our way to a hotel about 3 miles down the road just in time because about two hours later the skies opened up and greeted us with a severe thunderstorm which lasted about an hour. We gathered in the lobby area for some Chinese food and pizza that was delivered DURING THE RAIN STORM and the guy stated it was no problem at all. During our fellowshipping, Frank decided his new name would be CEASAR for the remainder of the trip (I still haven t figured that one out yet but I would guess it had something to do with his name being called frequently during the trip for one thing or another. Richard (4/10) Blake provided comic relief and constantly reminded us that he needed to be at the airport on the 2nd of July to pick up Jackie. Aaron Cain admires a beautiful wooden motorcycle during on the the chapter s several tops along the Chapter B Poses with Les from HARD CORE PAWN. I m told that observes in the parking lot wanted to know is any members wanted to sell their rides...i DON T THINK SO. (Smile) OK...Somebdy tell me how in SAM HILL they fit 11 people in this house?!?! This is a photo of the Jackson family home (now a museum) in Gary Indianna. 1 July; We got an early start in the morning with destination Madison Wisconsin in our sights. We had to take the scenic route because the storm had caused some road closures. Later that day we pulled into Madison at the Alliant Center and the parking lot was full of bikes and as we made our way to registration the adrenalin was pumping even though the vendors were not open for business until the following day. We took the time we spent in the registration line to make some new friends from Florida and Oklahoma as we each discussed the scenic routes taken to get there. Richard departed shortly afterwards to pick up his wife from the airport which was about 30 minutes away. Toni and I finally caught up with them later in the hotel parking garage and all was well. Continued on Pg. 6 5

Cont.. The group reached Madison Wisconsin Safely and as this story proved, with a whole lot of fun. During our Stay in Madison we all were able to take in some advanced riding and leadership classes that will be of value to the chapter as a whole. We were also pleased to see family members that joined us there (Ken Trass, Sharon Simmons, George Hampton & his NEW Bride CONGRATS ). Toni and I were like kids in a candy store as we roamed up and down the isles making contact with just about every vendor there at least twice every day (yes the shopping spree WAS ON). Well, as we got down to the shinny copper in our pockets we looked at each other and decided it was time to call it quits and head back down the road. Region B did host the light parade which was fantastic but while Richard Blake and I were working as traffic monitors we quickly realized that Madison mosquitoes operate in attack mode, thanks BO for your assistance with the mosquito repellant. We attended the closing ceremony hoping that we would come home with some cash or a new bike (NOT), but we will try again next year in Huntsville, Ala. As we made it to the parking lot afterwards, we got the word that Frank and Karen were still having problems with their trike and luckily (with your traveling prayers) there were able to make it to the arena parking lot where we were departing from. The symptoms were the trike would not stay running for more than 5 minutes before cutting off and we all came to the same conclusion that we were dealing with a (bad alternator), so now the plan is how are we going to get this trike and trailer back to Maryland. We took a long look over towards the parking lot where the Honda vendor was and they had packed and left at 3:00pm so what s the next option on a Saturday afternoon, you got it, a (U-Haul & Trailer). Lillian (I have the Wing Ding storage vehicle) Cruz took Frank down the road and he returned with a truck and trailer (your traveling prayers). The next obstacle we were faced with was keeping the trike started and getting it on the trailer. That is where my portable jumper cables came in handy and from somewhere (we think from off the arena itself) Kirk Williams provided about 8 bricks enabling us to make a ramp and get the trike safely (your traveling prayers) on the trailer and we were on the road heading home. Shelly Greene hooked up Frank & Karen s trailer to her bike (which she claimed as hers for the next two days), (I think she gave it back). Family, it all worked out in the end and we all arrived home SAFELY! We made a brief stop at the Honda of Crofton to drop off the trike and Karen (who did all the driving back) was giving lessons to Frank AKA Cesar on how to back up a vehicle with a trailer! I got a text from Karen about a week later and it was confirmed that the alternator was faulty. I want to send a special thanks to Lillian Cruz, whom allowed us to fill her vehicle to the top with any and everything, Kirk Williams with his resourcefulness in enabling us to get the trike on the trailer (I guess the building is still standing after he replaced the bricks), Stan Greene & Bruce Hill, for their trip planning and getting us there and back SAFELY, and Shelly Greene, if you had not been there to hook up Frank & Karen s trailer to your trike, we would have had a whole new set of issues to deal with. Thank you ALL for your Prayers on a fantastic trip. Aaron and Toni Cain 6

FROM THE ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTOR I hope everyone s summer is going well. Every month the Hive s participation in Chat-n-Chew s and Monthly Gathering s is growing by leaps and bounds. On June 28, Aaron & Toni Cain, Bruce Hill, Kirk Williams, Richard Blake (Jackie was flying in on July 1 to join us.), Karen & Frank Monroe, Stan & Shelley Greene (MD-I), and I departed from Rips at Routes 301 and 197 to begin our journey to Wing Ding 36. Stan Greene was the Road Captain. He navigated the terrain (radar detection and bad weather) with his Garmin and Mini ipad. We traveled through Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin and Ontario, Canada. (Ken Trass and Sharon Simmons meet us at Wing Ding.) Darrell and Karyn Wills joined us at Rips to give a Chapter B send off. They were not joining us this year because they were departing for Paris, France the same night. The journey to Niagara Falls (Canadian side of the Falls) was entertaining. Richard Blake has a great sense of humor and kept everyone entertained. The weather was the great for the entire trip except for the tornado warning, thunder, lightning and 65 mph wind gust outside of Chicago on Monday evening. Besides visiting Niagara Falls (I highly recommend.), we also visited the Motown Museum in Detroit, Michigan; and the Jackson family home in Gary, Indiana. We arrived at Madison in time to support Bob & Julie A Hearn in the International Couple of the Year selection program on July 1. They did an outstanding job representing the Maryland District and the Northeast Region. However, they were not selected. Please thank them for a job well done when next you see them. I ran into Sharon Simmons on Monday, she had arrived on Sunday. Ken Trass took a short cut (just kidding). He rode to Seattle, Washington to meet Deidre. Then they went on a Cruise to Alaska. She flew back to Maryland and he rode to Madison. Everyone in the Hive who attending Wing Ding participated in various seminars/classes...that s right, 100% participation!!!! Way to go Chapter B!!!!!!! Ms. Shirley generated a course list to keep track of all our classes and Bruce made sure that everyone had a copy. Way to go team!!! Plenty of safety chrome, lights, and riding gear were purchased by all in attendance. I want to thank all the members of the Hive who attended Wing Ding and volunteered to assist in the Light Parade and Grand Parade.Thank you!!! On the July 4 th, all the members showed their patriotic spirit by wearing red flag/star shirts and appropriate accessories (for the ladies) thanks to Cracker Barrel. The journey home was awsome. It took a village/hive to get us home. Continued on the next page... 7

Cont Frank & Karen Monroe developed alternator problems with their Trike on Saturday evening. This was after closing ceremonies, resulting in a visit to the local U-Haul in Madison, because all of the vendors had packed up and were not available. They ended up renting a truck and a trailer to tow their trike home. Shelley Greene (MD-I) hooked up the Monroe s motorcycle trailer to her trike and pulled it back to Maryland. The trike was loaded into the U-Haul trailer. This was a task unto itself. Thanks go out to Kirk Williams and Shelley Greene for building a ramp. You have to ask them where the materials for this came from. I am leaving that story up to them. A special thank you to April Greene (Stan & Shelley s daughter) for making a reservation late Saturday night at the Cracker Barrel. We were scheduled to depart Madison at 5 p.m. Saturday and ended up leaving Madison on Sunday morning. On July 15, Chat-n-Chew was at Longhorn Steakhouse, Bowie, MD. We had 15 in attendance from MD-B and MD-I (Stan Greene). In the middle of the Chat-n-Chew, the heavens opened up and a storm began. This resulted in those with umbrellas escorting those without. Jeff Lindenwhite announced that he had his GWRRA member number and was now officially a member of Chapter B. Way to go Jeff!!! On July 19, Chapter gathering was one of the largest participants since coming to our new location. We had visiting member from MD-H, MD-I and MD-J. We were pleasantly surprised with a visit from members we had not seen in a while, Richard & June Reynolds, Reggie & Renee Mitchell, Sharon Simmons, Herb Gaskin, and James Gill. Certificates were presented by Bruce Hill, Chapter Educator, to all those who turned in a course completion list for seminars/classes at Wing Ding. They included: Aaron & Toni Cain, Kirk Williams, and I. So, if you don t see you name in this article, it means you didn t provide your data to Bruce or Ms. Shirley Dorsey. Sunday, July 20, Queen s Chapel United Methodist Church held its Community Day from 1p.m. to 7 p.m. The Hive showed up in numbers: Aaron Cain, Warren Little, Jeff Lindenwhite, Tony Bonner and his sister, Reggie & Renee Mitchell, Charley Fogg, Charles & Shirley Dorsey, Harry & Margaret Dockery, June Reynolds, Hamp & ShaRon Conway, Bruce Hill, Regina Smith, Stan Greene (MD-I), and yours truly. Every year our attendance grows at this event. Trophies were given to Brian Carter 1 st Place Motorcycle, Aaron Cain 2 nd Place Motorcycle, and Stan Greene, Pastor s Choice Motorcycle trophies. (Note: Brian Carter ran the Motorcycle Rodeo at MD-B s Fun Day.) Tony Bonner shared with us, that while we were in Wing Ding, he added a new addition to his family. The next time you see him, congratulation him on his new GL 1800!!! REMINDER: The NJ/NY Bi-State Convention (August 7-10, 2014) will be in Mount Olive, NJ. If you are planning on attending, please arrive before Saturday, August 9 for the Region Couple of the Year selection process to support our Maryland District representatives, Dan and Laura Watts (MD-I). 11 RIDER EDUCATION Bruce Hill Chapter B Rider Educator The Rider Education Levels Program- Level I There have been several new members that have joined our group recently which motivates me to reiterate the benefits of the levels of rider education and what it requires to qualify. I am asked from time to time about a particular feature of the program. In the articles that I am submitting over the next months I hope to fully explore the benefits of program participation. The four levels of advancement build on each other, with each one contingent upon completion of the prior level and maintaining the requirement. Advancement is done by completing the requirements and applying for advancement. I have the forms and will send them in on your behalf. The levels program and the Safe miles program run in conjunction with each other and are complementary. Safe miles are a part of the requirements needed for advancement to level II and level IV. The designations of Safe Miles are contingent on two criteria. The miles must be accumulated after joining GWRRA and are reset if a significant accident occurs. An accident that is considered to be significant would be one that is reported to law enforcement, compensated by insurance, or in which there is an injury. While the accumulation of Safe Miles satisfies one of the qualifications of the levels program, it also serves as a validation and result of the motorcycle rider operating the bike under control. The Level I rider (or Safe Miles Rider) is simply agreeing to make a commitment to riding safe. It does not instantly make a rider a more skillful bike handler that is more proficient in handling a variety of road hazards or traffic situations. It does however, tend to change the focus of the rider to a more responsible and aware operator. When the rider accepts the yoke of keeping safety as a guiding force in the decisions made during the ride, he has in effect become a better rider, even before taking any classes, seminars or exercises. The mental part of riding becomes the greatest tool in how the ride is approached, planned, executed, and even critiqued. Chances taken before now seem a little too risky. Ride planning now is not ignored or overlooked. Bike checks and service become a vital part of trip planning and gives you a better likelihood of a trip without discrepancies and breakdowns. Route planning takes into account road pavement conditions, traffic, time of day, and likelihood of encountering wildlife to name a few. All this now becomes a consideration simply because a rider made a commitment. Once the commitment is made, all the rest of the requirements become second nature. For many, the requirements for the levels program are nothing new from what is done as part of the normal routine. The program offers a structured approach to keep proficient in certain basic elements of safe motorcycle operation. As members of GWRRA, we have the unique ability to take advantage of opportunities to enhance our ability and bike riding experience. Whether it is accomplished by taking classes, seminars, or exercises or even with association with other members who are like minded; the goal of a safe group ride becomes contagious. When one shows concern, others follow suit. Just remember, a safe ride is a fun ride. The combination of the two goes hand in hand with the ideals of our organization as well as to give satisfaction of a job well done.
