PRESIDENT S REPORT On well, winter is here, and that east coast low sure caused a bit of trouble around the place. Nevertheless, by 6 June when a big crowd met at the Redcliffe Bridge Club, the rain had gone but there was a westerly hanging around. Here is a photo of the early birds having a chinwag while they waited for the meeting to start. A couple of issues came forward at our meeting and I will summarise them here for those who could not get to the meeting. First of all, I mentioned last month that we would assess whether or not we should continue with our Wednesday night raffles and, if we do, how we might better manage that avenue of fund raising. Your committee has conducted some research and discussed the issue at our most recent meeting. The result is that we will continue with the raffle, monitor the ongoing situation during the year, and then assess the situation again at the end of our reporting year. Second, Peter Allen reminded us that Sunday 12 June was the 20 th Anniversary of that fatal Blackhawk incident when 18 soldiers lost their lives. A tragic incident RIP those warriors. Third, Margaret Ellis gave us a clip from a local paper. The article reminded us that we no longer are issued with a vehicle registration sticker, and highlighted that one local MP has a giveaway window sticker that might help. Pedro has since ed a copy of the article to members. Fourth, Elfie informed us about a special invitation bowls day to be held by the Caboolture Vietnam Veterans group in conjunction with their General Meeting on 21 june (Pedro sent the details to members on our list). We were all invited to attend and I believe it went very well. Fifth, Doug Bennet mentioned that, under certain conditions, it may be possible for members to get VCES funding for grandchildren. Doug has done some research on the issue and has told that me he will provide an update for members at our July meeting. And lastly, Pedro advised that this would be his last term on the Committee, and asked for someone to step up to take his place. We thank Pedro for his muchvalued contribution to our TPI family in general and our Committee in particular. We also thank Peter Allen who has stepped up and volunteered to have a chat with Pedro about the possibility of taking up responsibility for membership and editor.
Even though it monstered us, we were lucky the east coast low came when it did, because it was on the very next Friday we had our BBQ at Jamieson Park. And of course a big thanks to our master chefs who who again turned on their customary supreme cuisine Although early birds needed to wear their TPI jacket, in the end it was absolutely wonderful winter weather to just sit, eat and enjoy good company. Have a look at these photos and judge for yourself. Obviously Graham, Clarence and Kerry thought it was nice weather for a chat, and Ned and Dave were obviously relishing their time in the sun (next Page).
I must thank Ned, who has volunteered to come down early on BBQ days to help us set up very much appreciated mate. Some of our partners met for one of their morning teas in June, and I can readily see I should have joined them the food looks simply scrumptious. And, as Mick says, you can tell when they are talking about us vets it s when they are laughing. And I hazard to guess they may have been laughing a bit at this gathering.
On 22 June we went on a very enjoyable learning experience to the Brisbane Maritime Museum, or at least it was for us Army and RAAF types. For our sailor friends it was a bit of naval nostalgia. At the museum, we were separated into two groups, exnavy and the rest. I can't elaborate on the other group, but us non-sailors were shown around the museum, including on board the former HMAS Diamantina by young Michael. I privately congratulated him for a job well done. Just a few photos are shown here. The rest will be available on our 2016 photo CD. The first few show us waiting at Redcliffe to be picked up by the bus. Corinne and Margaret were focussed on their discussion. Pirate and Ted were relaxed and looking ready forward to a great day. Ned and Clive were showing amused concern for Pedro. P e P Perhaps Pedro had ventured a little too close to a group that was discussing SWB?
And below, the guide for my group, Michael, is making an historical point. Gloria is being very attentive as were the rest of us. After leaving the Museum, we were off to the Ship Inn for lunch. Here we are at two tables waiting for our nosh.
We showed up at Bunnings and sizzled snags on Monday 20 and had another successful day. Business was steady from the word go, and we thank all our volunteers who worked on the day, your help is cherished. Here is a photo of the late shift, and I especially want to welcome Pete and Suzy to the team I hope you both enjoy the opportunity to socialise as you sizzle. At our June meeting, Beryl outlined arrangements for our 2016 Christmas In July. For new members, we have this event each year, alternating between a Brisbane venue and an away venue. This year we are away on a two-day overnight bus trip staying in the city of Warwick. Just remember, it will be winter, we will be on the Downs, and it will be cold outside. So be prepared to rug up! Those of us who have been to Warwick will tell you that there is some fantastic colonial architecture. If you have time, have a look around the place. For example, visit the Warwick Green Belt on the banks of the Condamine River, which features a sculpture of Tiddalik (the mythical frog that drank all of the fresh water in a renowned Aboriginal Dreamtime story). Did you know that Patrick Leslie and his two brothers originally settled in the area as squatters, naming their run Canning Downs. In 1847 the NSW government asked Leslie to select a site on his station for a township, which was to be called Cannington, although the name Warwick was eventually settled on. Land sales were held in 1850 and Leslie bought the first allotment.
The telegraph to Brisbane was operating by 1861, and the 1870s were boom years for this new town. In 1871 the railway reached Warwick, a brewery was built in 1873, then a cooperative flourmill and brickworks were completed during Warwick has been the seat of a series of local government areas, the Borough of Warwick from 1861, Town of Warwick from 1903, City of Warwick from 1936, Shire of Warwick from 1994, and Southern Downs Region from On 29 November 1917 the Warwick Incident occurred. As Prime Minister William Hughes was addressing a crowd at the Warwick railway station, a man in the crowd threw an egg dislodging the Prime Minister's hat. Hughes ordered the arrest of the egg thrower, but the Queensland policeman present refused to carry out the order saying that Hughes had no authority over him. This incident led to the formation of the Australian Commonwealth Police with the first commissioner for Commonwealth Police appointed eight days later. As a group, we are booked into the Abbey of the Roses for our Christmas in July dinner, so now I have a little history about the Abbey for you. The foundation stone of the Abbey was laid on August , with the Abbey being built for the Sisters of Mercy who arrived in Warwick in At first they were using a small brick cottage for their teachings. But the cottage soon became too small, so the Abbey was built in two stages with the first stage finished in 1883 and the second in In its heyday, the abbey housed up to 23 nuns and up to 60 girls from the age of about 11 onwards. It was used as a safe house for the girls of All Hallows in Brisbane through WWII, and at that time it housed up to 160 girls. By 1987 there were only three nuns living there and it took too much upkeep so it was sold to Assumption College. Then in 1993 it was sold again and became a bed and breakfast. Interestingly, the Breakfast Creek Hotel, and the Abbey of the Roses, were designed by the same architects more than a hundred years ago.
Last month I mentioned that Mick and I had been asked to represent you at a luncheon put on by the Redcliffe RSL to celebrate 100 years of what is now known as the Returned Services League. We accepted and went along with our lovely ladies. We had a oration on the RSL past, present and future by Stewart Cameron who is President of RSL Queensland. A very good presentation but during his introductory bio I could swear I heard the words Air Commodore mentioned 6 million times; but in reality only about 20 times. Not sure who wrote his bio, but it needs some serious work regarding his moniker nothing wrong with using first names. For me the highlight was a presentation by Dan Keighran VC, and seeing some competitors from the recent Invictus Games (Darlene Brown and Mark Urquhart). Darlene won our first medal at the games, and Mark is the athlete who helped a US competitor across the line ahead of himself to win gold (Mark had already won gold medals). Dan, Darlene and Mark are first class people and real Aussie heroes. Oh yes, I must tell you that when Mick saw this next photo his very first reaction was to point out my perceptibly polished pate.
Just in case you missed it, Rod White AM RFD has been elected as the RSL National President. Rod has been the NSW State President for the past year, having been NSW Honorary State Treasurer since 2004 and a State Councillor since He is a Life Member of the RSL, since joining 45 years ago, and is a Vietnam veteran who retired with the rank of Major. Rod enlisted in 1964 in the Army Reserve with the 17th Infantry Battalion, later volunteering for the Regular Army as a National Serviceman and serving for nearly 3 years. He was posted to the 9th Battalion and then with the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment in Vietnam as an infantry corporal and a mortar fire controller. After Vietnam Rod returned to the building industry, re-enlisted in the Army Reserve and was subsequently appointed a commissioned officer. His postings included 2IC Sydney University Regiment and 17th Infantry Battalion. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (Military Division) for his service to the Australian Army Reserve and awarded the Reserve Forces Decoration. He has served as chairman of RSL LifeCare, as a Trustee of the RSL Welfare and Benevolent Institution, and as a director of the Anzac House Trust. Now, I must tell you about a Aussie vet who went to their first appointment with a trick cyclist (psychiatrist): - Do you consume alcohol? - No. - Do you smoke? - No. - Do you use drugs? - No. - Do you play cards? - No. - Do you gamble? No. - Do you run after women? - No. - So why did you come to see me? - I tell a lot of lies. Finally, make sure you turn up at our General Meeting on Monday July 4 and our BBQ on Friday July 8 I hope I will see you at both events. And remember; the sole purpose of a child's middle name is so that they can tell when they are really in trouble. Take care, Phil

Harry's Café de Wheels The story of 'Harry's Café de Wheels' goes back to the depression years of the late 1930's. With the world on the brink of a devastating war, an enterprising Sydneysider by the name of Harry Edwards opened a caravan café near the front gates of the Woolloomooloo naval dockyard. Word spread quickly with Harry's 'pie n' peas' and crumbed sausages soon becoming a popular part of the city's nightlife - keenly sought by sailors, soldiers, cabbies, starlets and coppers alike. Harry operated the caravan until 1938 when he enlisted in the AIF during WWII. During Harry's time in the Middle East, he was nicknamed "Tiger" due to his boxing prowess and the name stuck. Upon his return in 1945, Harry realised that Sydney hadn't changed much and it was still almost impossible to get a good feed late-night, so he reopened and the caravan has been operating continuously since. The phrase 'Café de Wheels' came about as the city council of the day insisted that mobile food caravans move a minimum of 12 inches a day. Harry dutifully obeyed and thus the name was expanded to Harry's Café de Wheels. Before the councils ruling, the caravan was known simply as 'Harry's.' When its wheels went missing one night, local wags coined the nickname 'Café de Axle.' Harry operated the caravan for a further 30 years before selling the business to Alex Koronya in By 1988, Alex was getting on in years and the business had fallen on hard times. Current owner, Michael Hannah, made Alex an offer to purchase the business and the exchange took place on Australia Day Michael is the first Australian born owner of Harry's and as a child his father, a Sydney cabbie, would take he and his siblings down to the loo for a pie at Harry's. In 1970, Michael returned from a tour of duty in Vietnam and his first stop after disembarking the HMAS Sydney was of course Harry's. It would be another 17 years until Michael purchased the business. Michael believes Harry's finest moment came in 1978 when Rear Admiral David Martin - over a pie and glass of Champagne - commissioned the caravan as 'HMAS Harry's.' In December 2004, Harry's was classified by the National Trust of Australia (NSW) and included on its Register. Per the National Trust of Australia, Harry's is a 'quintessential Sydney icon' and in the Trust's opinion, falls within the following definition: 'Those places which are components of the natural or the cultural environment of Australia, that have aesthetic, historical, architectural, archaeological, scientific, or social significance or other special value for future generations, as well as for the present community.'
As the years have passed, Harry's has become a 'must' for visiting celebrities. Harry's has served up the likes of Frank Sinatra, Robert Mitchum, Marlene Dietrich, Kerry Packer and more recently, Sir Richard Branson, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Brook Shields, Pat Rafter, Olivia Newton-John, Jerry Lewis, Billy Crystal, Pamela Anderson, Sara O'Hare, Lachlan Murdoch, Kerri-Anne Kennerley, Adrian Greiner, Anthony Bourdain and Peter Blakely. In 1974, chicken king, Colonel Sanders, stopped at Harry's and enjoyed the food so much that he ate three 'pies and peas' while leaning on his walking stick in front of the caravan. Elton John has also been a visitor to Harry's over the years and held a press conference from inside Harry's during the 1970's. And then there's the album... in 1990, Peter Blakely released his debut album 'Harry's Café de Wheels' which went platinum. Harry's has become so popular with the celebrities that in 1991, Rupert Murdoch had pies shipped to Los Angeles for an Australian themed Oscar's party. But you definitely don't have to be a celebrity to enjoy Harry's, just hungry. Since its initial opening in the 1930's, Harry's has withstood the test of time. A trip to Harry's lets you enjoy authentic Aussie tucker while taking a trip back through Harry's history.
