Box 803 RENMARK SA : agsclark@bigpond.com After enduring a fairly crappy winter the favourable weather forecast for Sunday August 26 th made the programmed Mallee Branch ride to Mount Pleasant too much to resist. Spring was just around the corner! Seven bikes loaded with nine Ulyssians assembled at our Barmera Pitstop departure point, then blasted off in a Westerly direction for them thar hills at 9:30 Ulysses Time. The variety of bikes seen on our group rides never fails to amaze me. This time our contingent consisted of Zebe (AKA Nev) on his R1200RT Beemer, Mick & Harley, Ray & K1600 Beemer, Bull & Suzi 1250 Bandit, Ash & Sylv on the Duc Multistrada 1200, Ron & Jill on the Yam TDM and me on my Raptor Wouldn t say no to having that line up in my shed. But we can t afford THE SHED, Just jokin dear. The ride down was pleasant but uneventful. Geez I hope I was awake! But I remember the short break at Waikerie and then the ride down the highway through Blanchetown and turning off to Sedan. Anyway it was a beaut day for just cruising.

THE GRAPEVINE - page 3 Latest police technology can x-ray moving bikes. Nev was lucky this time as the operator had the gain turned up so high that the rider was rendered invisible.(since July 2012 the wearing of highly coloured jocks while riding a motorcycle over 600cc is illegal, so this picture could have resulted in a hefty fine) We rested at Sedan, which was a pre-arranged rendezvous with Ian, who has had a long association with the Mallee mob and now lives in Adelaide. (We encounter yet another type of bike, his Triumph Sprint 955). The section up the hill to Keyneton is always sweet for those of us who feel topographically deprived (corner-starved) and this was no exception. After the short run across the top we arrived at Mount Pleasant as a relatively tidy rabble. Where will we eat? was the cry. There wasn t much to debate since we were parked outside a pub. The ten of us entered the Mount Pleasant Hotel together. Sorry, it was nine only as Mick had not wasted valuable time like the rest of us and was already downing his second. Refreshments and lunch were partaken and mostly enjoyed. As usual we provided our own brand of bulldust and (f)lies for entertainment. Rides boss Nev asked us which way we wanted to ride home (someone suggested forwards ). Nev s suggestion of Tungkillo, Mannum and Walker Flat was agreed on, so we said goodbye to Ian, who was returning to Adelaide, and mounted the previously mentioned assortment of motorcycles. Down the hill to Tungkillo was a good ride, notwithstanding swivel-necks towing caravans. (Hang on Trev they were probably lovely people who were jealous of us other old farts and the freedom of bike riding). Some of us who have got tiny tanks and/or ride too hard then fuelled up at Mannum, before we regrouped and cruised through Mannum and on to the ferry crossing at Walker Flat. It was there that the author was terrorised by one of the less mature of the group, who rained gibbers on to the dunny roof! As it happened the ferry ride was the last time we spoke on the ride (as a group, not just me and the stone thrower). I think it often happens that on the way home in the flat country after enjoying some different roads we are just keen to get the job done. We rode as a group all the way (not always the case), waving goodbye to our mates as they peeled off to their homes. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and hope others felt the same way, especially the newer Ulyssians in the group. Thanks rides-bosses Nev and Mick! Mallee Branch welcomes new members Ron Atkinson & Gill Ray Andt & Julie We re looking forward to seeing more of you soon! Salty

THE GRAPEVINE - page 4 Sunday July 8: On arriving at the Pit Stop at about 9.30 am. I found Ash read to go. No, not 9.30 am., we leave at am., so he could relax. After a coffee a few more turned up, so I decided to leave for our assembly point at Loxton. A little early, catching 1 or 2 late comers by surprise Ulysses members always leave late, is the rule. At Loxton they gradually assembled, we had eleven bikes and twelve people. After sorting out our Agenda we left, yes, a little late. Nice day, no wind, cool, good riding conditions. Just over half way I pulled in to a parking bay for a pit stop. Lucky I did because it allowed Cookie to catch up, after (I hate to admit this) his R/V mirror dropped off. However, the glass did not break, tough those BMW s. As planned, we arrived at Tom Quince s place to have a look at his collection of Holdens. He must have about 8 in going condition, one getting done and another getting reconditioned for some one else. His pride and joy is a , they don t come any older than that, and his number plate is SA We left Tom to open the Museum. We had lunch at the Mobil Service Station. This is where we met Spen. He was already in Pinnaroo waiting for us. After lunch we went to the Museum which has an eclectic lot of stuff. The most unusual is the printing section. The rest is old tractors, stationary engines, farm implements and house - hold gear. Many thanks to Tom for making it a good day and a worthwhile ride. The ride home was through Lameroo to Alawoona, to Loxton and Home. Zebe July 22 I rode to Loxton in fog (not nice). Met with Simon and Raylene and Peter Schultz. They fuelled up, we left for Swan Reach. The fog was slowly lifting. Met up with Dave Barr and Ern and Ian at Swan Reach. Stopped for a coffee at the café by the ferry and was soon caught up with by Trev and Ash our crew was complete. On the way to Walkers Flat one of our members decided to find out if his bike could go faster than the speed limit. It did go over a little bit! After a leisurely ride to Murray Bridge, some fuelled up before the bridge, and we headed for Dundees Hotel and restaurant for lunch. Lunch was good (smorgasboard). After that the party started to break up, the Southeners leaving. Ern had to go around the corner to home, Trev, Simon and Ray, Ash left for a few twisties, while I went to Tailem Bend to meet with Michael. After I fuelled up, we left for home via Karoonda. Mick had some sort of wog or virus, he was not feeling well, so it was a slowish, steady trip to Loxton where we parted company. Thanks to those who came, to make it a good day and worthwhile ride. Zebe A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like: "We used to skate outside on a pond I had a swing made from a tyre; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The little girl was wideeyed, taking this all in. At last she said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!"

THE GRAPEVINE - page 5 August 12 The morning was clear and cold when I left home to meet up with the crew at Yamba. Bugger me, I was not the first there! Ash C. and Keith F. were there. Time for a coffee with Peter as the rest rocked up by departure time. Ten bikes had gathered and we headed non-stop for Centro Mildura. Apart from sighting a few emus the trip was uneventful (read good!) At Centro we met with a few Mildura members and went in for a coffee. The Mildura blokes said it would take an extra half hour to go to Red Cliffs. So we fuelled up and headed to Werrimull via Benetook Avenue, arriving at the pub by about a quarter to one E.S.T. Simon, Raylene and Squizzy were already there, in total about 17 people. After ordering lunch we sat around outside (well most of us) and talked the usual talk (read bullshit!). Our lunch was served in reasonably quick time and it was good, nutritious hamburgers and fries. After lunch we gradually dispersed, the Mildura blokes went home. The main group stayed, until we decided to go home. However, I was delayed by the cook, she was telling me she is an ex biker and would love to get back on one. Once I got going the group took off and we made it back to the road block, where I had to get off and lift the lid of my top box. Others had to open panniers, unusual! After that it was to head for home. That was a good ride and a top day. Zebe September 16 Departure time from the Pit Stop was 9.30 am. for our ride to Burra, via Eudunda. Six people with 5 bikes and one three wheeler took to the road. We headed off to Waikerie then to Cadell, to Morgan where some fuelled up. Good riding conditions cool, little wind. I stopped at Eudunda for a visor clean and to make sure we had our full crew. The Burra Gorge stop We headed out to Robertstown, through there to the World s End. The country is looking nice with green crops and yellow canola flowers. On the way we turned left into the Burra Gorge for a look. The creek was not flowing very much. When it does flow it goes all the way to the Murray at Morgan. I was surprised at the number of people that were camping or having a day out in the gorge. On to Burra and lunch. Some (most) had lunch in the pub. A couple lunched in the café next door. After filling our stomachs, we filled our motor cycles with fuel and headed out into the Never Never (Burra Morgan Road). At Morgan we split, a couple going back across the punt, the rest (3) going on the Morgan Renmark road. A good day, a good ride! Zebe THINKING OF TAKING YOUR BIKE TO KANGAROO ISLAND? Carol and I recently spent a few days on K.I, and had to make the decision whether it would be on the bike or in the car. We opted for the car, and on balance it was the best choice. There is a lot of good bitumen on the island now, and some good winding and undulating roads which would be great on a bike. However, the scrub grows out to the guide posts, and there is a lot of wildlife, particularly wallabies. Also, a lot of the minor roads are graded gravel and not suitable for a touring bike, so this would limit your options a bit. We met a group of 3 on dirt bikes, but their options would have been a bit limited as most tracks seem to be locked up in National Parks, leaving only the unsealed roads for their pleasure. The island is worth a trip but I reckon the car is the best way to go. Toddy

THE GRAPEVINE - page 6 HAPPY 90 Th. BIRTHDAY NORM WESTLAKE More than 30 of us congregated at the Waikerie Hotel on Sunday 7/10/12 to celebrate Norm s Ninetieth, and honour Mallee Branch s oldest member. It was good to welcome friends from both Torrens Valley and Lower Murray Branches and their partners. Also present was Roger Gibbins, one of our few remaining inaugural members. Norm and Wife Merle were obviously moved by the support of their fellow Ulyssians, and Pres. Toddy presented Norm with a card signed by all those present, together with a 90 th gold badge. See you at your 100 th Norm.! Toddy Enjoy Superb Dining in the RIVER GUM RESTAURANT With magnificent panoramic views Overlooking the MURRAY RIVER. PH: (08) Counter Meals. Accommodation. Conference Function Rooms. Riverside Beer Garden under Sun Sails. : SKY CHANNEL :TAB :BOTTLE DEPARTMENT : X-LOTTO : KENO : POKIES I saw an entry in the Ulysses website messages about 6 months ago looking for volunteers to become involved in escort and traffic control work for the promoters of marathon and pushbike races conducted in Vic. (think Tour Down Under format). It looked interesting and I found that the deal involved volunteering with a bunch of blokes, mostly Ulyssians to work under the direction of Victoria Police in providing traffic control for criteriums and road races. Expenses to and from are covered, accommodation is provided, and a daily expenses allowance is paid. An expenses paid motorcycle trip to Vic. and back looked good so I volunteered, and was accepted (they found I was as mad as the rest of them so I was in) The tasks are not for the faint hearted, particularly the road races which involve controlling the junctions and intersections through which the race will pass. This involves a rolling road closure with

Police vehicles at the front and rear of the cycle entourage (comprising support vehicles and the peloton) with Police solos going ahead and clearing and closing the road. Each scout has a list of the points which he has to control (maybe 6 or 8 in a 150km race) so this involves repeatedly leapfrogging the whole entourage to get to your next point and secure it before the peloton caches up. Getting past the riders is a black art rapid and continuous sounding of the horn/riding on the very edge of the tar/ sometimes on the graded verge/elbow to elbow with riders alongside/being prepared to suddenly brake for riders who swerve in front of you/overtaking vehicles (incl. Police) on either side, and dealing with drivers who are trying to enter the rolling roadblock. If you are not comfortable with riding in very close formation with bikes and other vehicles, then this is not for you. However the challenge is a good way to enhance your riding skills and confidence, and to spend good times with a good bunch of blokes who are dead serious on the job but who have a great time after hours. I ve done 3 tours now and have had a hoot. Unfortunately, the future arrangements are a bit uncertain as the promotions Company has sold the rights to Cycling Aust. and we are not sure if they will use Motoscouts in the future. Toddy. THE GRAPEVINE - page 7 SundaySeptember 2 Our menfolk were blessed with glorious weather for a 9.00am riverside breakfast at Bert Dix Park, Paringa on Father s Day. The assembled crowd included Neville and Leonie, George and Helen, Pete and Rosey, Gary and Di, Mick, Arthur, Strapper, Keith, and Carol who was acknowledging Toddy s day while he was off in Victoria piloting a pedal-bike ride. Pete and Neville kept costs low at $6.00 per head, but some happily paid more, so our fundraising account gained an extra $45. Big thanks to Pete for cooking a scrumptious feed of tomato, egg and bacon, and making sure we had everything we needed for the event, and to Trevor Dennis of Renmark North for donating the eggs. Thanks to all who came along to make an enjoyable occasion for the blokes special day. Rosey Sandow HOW IS NORMA? A sweet grandmother telephoned St. Mary's Hospital. She timidly asked, "Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing?" The operator said, "I'll be glad to help, dear. What's the name and room number of the patient?" The grandmother in her weak, tremulous voice said, "Norma Findlay, Room 302." The operator replied, "Let me put you on hold while I check With the nurse's station for that room." After a few minutes, the operator returned to the phone and said, "I have good news. Her nurse just told me that Norma is doing well. Her blood pressure is fine; her blood test just came back normal, and her physician, Dr.Cohen, has scheduled her to be discharged tomorrow." The grandmother said,"thank you. That's wonderful. I was so worried. God bless you for the good news." The operator replied,"you're more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?" The grandmother said,"no, I'm Norma Findlay in Room 302. No one tells me shit."
