CHAPTER DIRECTOR S Happy November everyone! Our October gathering was so much fun, we had a Costume Fashion Show, skit s and jokes. The costume s that our Chapter members wore were fantastic. We thank each of you for participating in our successful Fashion Show. First Place Award went to Betty Currie, Second Place Award went to Gordon Currie, and Third Place Award went to Danny McIlrath. Please join me in congratulating our Costume Fashion Show winners. The rain kept many of you home, but if you missed our October Gathering, you missed a good time. We have cancelled our November Gathering and decided not to reschedule. Our Chapter Gathering was scheduled for Monday, November 12th, which is also Veteran s Day. Golden Corral will be serving the Veteran s free meals on that date. We will resume our normal schedule in December. We attended the Mississippi District Rally in Biloxi, Mississippi. At the same time, Biloxi was celebrating Cruisin on the Coast, which meant there were plenty of cars, trucks, and motorcycles Cruisin on the Coast. We have a wonderful time in Biloxi and are looking forward to attending their Rally next year. Please continue to check your s on Monday s for K s Kalendar. The Ride Committee work s very hard to provide our Chapter with a variety of activities. It doesn t matter if you ride two, three or four wheels, you can still attend any of the activities, so come on out and join us. The Holiday s are fast approaching. Please have a safe trip if you are traveling out of town to visit family and/or friends. Have a great month! Julia & Greg 2

ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTOR S Time is just moving so fast that one month goes by before you know it. I have done a lot of riding this past month. I took a trip up to Georgia on the bike to see both daughters and all four grandchildren. I took off Friday and Monday so had a long weekend. Spent one day with Kim s family and a day with Beth s too. I then headed to Atlanta to meet up with a longtime friend, Keenan, and we went to the Falcons home game. We had a lot of fun. After the game we got out fast. We left the game at 4:00 PM and I got on the bike and headed home. I got to the house at 11:55 PM. Was going to stay overnight but felt good and it was nice weather so just kept going. It was a very good weekend and I spent Monday resting and cleaning the bike. This past weekend I went with Ed and Jeanette and Nolan and Ruth to south Florida. The storm was blowing the wind to our backs going south so we moved along rather easily. It was a fun event and enjoyed meeting up with friends. I entered the cake walk and won. So we all set down and eat the red velvet cake. Now the ride back with the wind blowing at us was a little harder. As always a day on the motorcycle is always a good day. So Sunday John Organ called and wanted to go on a ride. So we met up and we had been riding for just a little bit and John asked did I want to go to Jacksonville and eat at Sticky Fingers. It was good and we then headed back South making a stop at The Honda dealer for John to pick up a part he had ordered, then over to A1A and south. I sure would like to see more of you out and riding and just see how much fun you can have. As always let us know of any place or route. Hope to see you all out and about. Danny and Kathy ACD 3

SENIOR CHAPTER EDUCATOR S In past years, we have held a Boys Ride Out lasting 4 to 6 days and ranging 1000 to 1500 miles. The rides have always had a good mix of 2 wheelers and trikes. The rides consisted of flat highways, curving country roads and some serious mountain roads; i.e. the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Dragon at Deals Gap, the Cherohala Skyway, Hiawassee, Grandfather Mountain, and Blood Mountain. These are meant to be an adventure of mountain riding; not a Florida ride. We all have a skill set with which we are comfortable. These trips offered one experience after another, mountain riding is a skill set all of its own. These are some of the skills that we need to concentrate on for mountain riding: Control your speed Brake prior to the curve Downshift and up shift at the correct position on the curve Use your gear range appropriately for the downgrade or uphill climb Concentrate on the exit point of the curve, remember our bike will follow Do not become fixated on the rider in front of you Keep your eyes moving Recognize the wind conditions in mountain draws and valleys Watch during the mornings, shade and dampness on the road RIDE YOUR BIKE at YOUR COMFORT/SKILL LEVEL The rides also sharpen our skills in the function of Road Captain/Drag and Team Riding. We ve had only one easily remedied mechanical issue and there was only one accident encountered. Yes, it was a Goldwing, not a hot sport bike, over the side of the road on the Dragon. Remember, we ride a great bike but it does what we tell it to do! These rides and our local rides offer a common theme; know our bike and skill level, practice ride techniques, and be aware of our surroundings. Ride for FUN and ride safely. 6 TREASURER AND COUPLE OF THE YEAR Freedom One of the things I most enjoy about motorcycle riding is the sensation of freedom I get while on two wheels. The usual things like wind in the hair, the open road, the open cockpit but, perhaps most of all, the freedom to go where Betty and I want to go when we want to go. Freedom. What a word!! What does it mean? What does it cost? What did our forefathers, our ancestors, our grandfathers and fathers, aunts and uncles pay for the freedom we have today? These are all valid and interesting questions but the one that bothers me the most is this one: What are the young people of today learning about freedom and how our government and the people mentioned above cared so much for freedom and paid so dearly for it. Betty s Father was an Iwo Jima veteran who was awarded the Bronze Star but never talked about the war. My uncles were in Europe in WWII and I never heard them talk about the war. They never asked for special attention. They never asked for recognition. My generation s war was Vietnam. I ve known a number of Vietnam vets who saw combat but none has been eager to actually talk about the war or what they did. Betty s Dad and the Vietnam vets went to war with no guarantees. Our servicemen and women have done the same in Korea, the Middle East and other places in the name of duty and freedom for us and our children. So the next time you ride, say a thank you for all the people who have made this possible and take every chance you get to tell young people about their heritage, how their freedom was won and how the freedom we have is being entrusted to them for safekeeping and for them to protect and enjoy down the road maybe even on two wheels. Betty and Bill Brattain 6

MOTORIST AWARENESS COORDINATOR S This has been a very busy month for us. We have been doing Biketoberfest, visitations, talking to bikers, passing out literature, and putting yard signs out, to warn motorists about motorcycles. We saw so many bikers speeding with no safety gear. They had no boots, no helmets, etc. Not only that, the bars were packed with bikers who were often drinking, then they get on their bikes and ride. Our rides are two fold. We have to watch for drivers that should not be on the road and bikers that have been drinking. There are a lot of men and women riding only when there is a function, such as bike week, biketoberfest, etc., so you have lots of inexperienced riders out there on the road during these times. Ride carefully and wear safety gear. Ralph and Margaret 7

REGION A DIRECTOR S The rally season has come to a close in Region A with the conclusion of the Mississippi District rally in Biloxi on October 13th. Of course there will still be Chapter events around the Region and the District officer meetings coming up in January, but the big District rallies are concluded. Nan and I attended each one and were impressed with how they went. Each was well attended and held at a good venue. Rallies, Poker Runs and other Chapter events are good teambuilding exercises and can be a useful measure of how things are going overall in that Region, District or Chapter. In order to host a successful event, a capable and dedicated staff must pull together and assemble a program that will attract a sufficient number of GWRRA members who enjoy themselves and want to return the next time that event is held. The Mississippi District rally just concluded was held on the Coast in Biloxi at the IP Resort, Casino and Spa. This was a great venue with lots to do. The food service there was superb and it is conveniently located just off I-110 at Bayview Ave. There was a nice selection of vendors located immediately across Bayview Ave. from the IP and the facilities used by the Mississippi District were very nice. Attendance was good and they had quite a few really nice prizes. Our thanks and congratulations to Bobby and Lori Bryant (the Mississippi District Directors) and their staff for a fun and exciting rally. Jim Hodge fixed a great red beans and rice dinner at the St. Martin Community Center on Thursday evening. This was a genuine Cajun meal and it was followed by an escorted light parade back to the IP. Nan and I were judges, which was very difficult due to the large number of well-lit bikes. We're told by Bobby and Lori that they will be returning to the Biloxi Coast for next year's rally. We have been informed by the Home Office that Chapter Chartering fees will be going up this year. Currently the Chartering fees are $50.00 per year. This fee is used to pay the insurance premium for the 2 million dollar liability insurance furnished to GWRRA Chapters, Districts and Regions for their events and other activities. These fees have been at the current levels for many years. As we are all familiar in our personal lives, the costs of insurance of just about every kind goes up with each passing year. It was inevitable that the premium cost of the GWRRA liability insurance would rise at some point and that time is now. Effective with this collection, the annual Chapter Chartering fee will be $ This works out to an increase of about $4.00 per month. We know that some folks will wonder at the $50.00 increase, but please remember that this fee (which is basically an insurance premium) has not gone up in many years and the liability insurance is something we must have in order to host GWRRA events while protecting the GWRRA components (Chapters, Districts and Regions) in the event of an accident or other mishap. We're sure that given the choice between the premium increase or not having the insurance, the vast majority would choose to have the insurance in force. District Directors; please take the time to explain this fee increase to your Chapter Directors. Thanks! We've asked the Chapters to send links (via ) to all the GWRRA members on their ARL, even if they are not active members of that Chapter. You don't have to mail a hard copy or even send a pdf file; just send the link so that the member can open if they want. We're trying to get as many members as possible involved in their local Chapters, in hopes that it will make their GWRRA experience more enjoyable and they'll consider remaining a member. Both the member and the Chapter benefit when more folks get involved and participate. Along those same lines, Chapters please do your best to make the new members feel welcome and wanted. Sometimes in the daily rush of events (family, jobs, etc) small things like this get lost. We know that most Chapters have a designated Sunshine or other person whose job it is to greet new members and welcome them into the group. Please do your best to make the new folks feel like they're wanted. Thanks! Please remember that our Region A officers meeting will be held at the Lakepoint Lodge in Eufaula, AL December 8th and 9th. District staffs should arrive Friday evening (over-night) so we can be ready to start early Saturday morning. We will meet for only a half day on Sunday (the 9th) with adjournment by noon on that day. We promise an interesting event with lots of useful info and ideas. We hope to see you at a GWRRA event somewhere soon, Bob & Nan 8

DISTRIST DIRECTOR S It is the 20th day of the month of October and my article is due today! October has been a busy month around the state. There have been several events including two today - one on the East Coast, FL1-H, Daytona, and the other on the West Coast, FL2- G, Ft. Myers. I hope the folks in each area attended these events as I am sure they were following Florida s Rule #1, Have FUN! You are probably wondering why I was not at one or the other? Well, I had to do that bad four-letter word today called WORK! I apologize to both groups for not being able to attend. I wish I could have been there! I was able to attend FL1-A s event earlier this month. Great job Bud and Ginger and to their team! I also made it to Bobby & Lori Bryant s Beach Party in Biloxi. They have moved their Rally back to the beach and we had a great time there, too! You may have noticed that it was not we attended, because Gina had to take care of the Costume Shop and she also attended an ABWA Leadership Conference in Memphis. So many hats to wear! Wow, we all have really been busy this month. There are still events remaining in October: FL2-A, FL2-R, and FL2-E ARE jointly putting on their world famous goulash feast in Clewiston. We do hope you get out and ride to these events and make it a FUN day for your folks! Chapter Directors, a bit of business news for you and your Treasurers: we have just received word from Phoenix that the annual Charter Fee for each chapter is now $100 for the year beginning Please send your annual Charter Fee of $100 to the District Treasurers, Jim and Rebecca Iverson (1402 Tiller Way, Valico, FL 33594) ASAP. Some of you may have already sent in $50 for the upcoming year. Please send an additional $50 in as soon as possible to the District Treasurers. This increase is due to the Third Party Liability Insurance GWRRA provides us for our events. Most of you have seen rates go up for your home owner s, car, motorcycle, etc. The cost to provide the coverage for every Chapter in GW has to be huge. So just like our fuel for our rides have gone up over $2 per gallon over the last few years so has the cost to insure our events. If you would like to discuss this with us, feel free to contact us by or phone. We will try to answer any questions or concerns you may have. We have held one of the area brain storming sessions for our NE Florida folks. Thanks to those who took the extra time to attend, and thank you for your input. We are planning several more of these roundtable sessions before the Region A Officers Conference with Bob Shrader and the other District Directors within Region A, and we hope to have some new ideas on Retention and Recruitment to present at the conference. Assistant DD s, please get with us regarding a date to meet with your Chapter Directors and their teams. Time is running short! Many of our Northern riders will be down before long, and we hope to see all of you out at an event andlfollowing Rule #1 of having FUN! Please check out the calendar of not only the District but also of other Chapters in your area. Attend their eventslfriends for FUN! With cooler air in November we surely will be able to get out more to ride and visit our friends and to have FUN! In closing, November contains several important events in its 30-day period. Most think of Thanksgiving and it is a very special day to give thanks for the things we have (both tangible and intangible). There is also Election Day. Regardless of who or what you believe in, we as Americans should votelexercising one of our most precious freedoms! Please vote on November 6. The day that will probably receive the least amount of attention is November 11th, Veteran s Day. Without the men and women who have served and continue to serve, we would not have either an election day or a day to give thanks. Gina and I say thank you to those that now wear a uniform or have worn a uniform of this great country of ourslfighting for and protecting the freedoms we so enjoy in the United States of America! Lastly, for me, November 13th holds a very important meaning. Gina and I will celebrate our 19th wedding anniversary this year. There are no words in any language that truly reflect the intensity of my love and feelings for the woman who has the keys to my heart. My life is blessed beyond measure because of the love of my lifelmy sweetheart Gina. I say to you, Gina, Happy Anniversary with the promise of many more! Happy day - each and every day! Friends for FUN, safety, and knowledge! See you soon! Bill & Gina Berry District Directors 9

ASSISTANT DISTRICT DIRECTOR S Meandering Around The South Harvest Greetings & Blessings. Isn t this great weather for riding and visiting with friends? We have been traveling and missed many local events but were able to host a brain-storming session prior to leaving. Chapters J,K,X and Y officers were in attendance to discuss membership retention with Bill and Gina Berry. We appreciate all involved taking time from their normal Sunday afternoon activities and taking travel time (not to mention those who missed the start of the Jags game). F * U * N filled the air at GW events. Those who attended FL1-X s Fall Fair Poker Run enjoyed the events and meatball sub lunch. Thank you to all FL1-X Chapter members for helping make it a success, despite being rewarded with the hot potato presented by FL1-A. Chapter FL1-K had a haunting double points meeting. If you were not there, you missed humorous skits, a multitude of door prizes, and amazing outfits like a football player/ cheer leader pair and a doctor/patient team. Go to K s web site and check out the photos. Members from FL1-J and FL1-K attended the Mississippi District Convention with us in Biloxi. The Imperial Palace site provided an interesting diversion - one arm bandits. About 20 vendors were on site; Jim & Margie Hodge lead their team to cook the red beans, rice and sausage Thursday meal; old cars filled the streets as Cursing the Coast was in full swing; and the beach what can we say it s always a delight to drive along and view the sunset. We are grateful to Bobbie & Laurie Bryant and their team for a great event. Biloxi will be the site for next year s event, so think about going. From MS we traveled through the state to Natchez and into Louisiana to visit with Jeanette s friends, tour the area where she lived for 21 years, and also satisfy her taste for Schlotzkys Original Sandwich, B.J. s Muffuletta, and fried catfish. Next we headed into Arkansas to look for autumn leaves in the Ozarks. No luck on this but we were not the only ones hoping for colored leaves. Christian Motorcyclists Association members filled the campsites in Iron Mountain for the Changing of the Colors Rally. The ride on Hwy. 7 and other roads was not a disappointment. After a visit in the Houston area with Ed s family, we traveled home ready to once again join our Florida GW friends in rides and events. Ed & Jeanette 10

Please help us collect these throughout our school year. The box tops go to our PTO who then used the money in our school for needed project or classroom items. The can tabs go to Ronald McDonald s House to help families while they have sick children. This gives the students a sense of involvement in the community. I discuss where and why we are saving the can tabs. My boys are very excited about helping this year. As an added bonus, if these boys collect the most of both, they earn a pizza party and a ice cream party. Please bring your box tops and can tabs to the Monthly Gathering s.
