1 VOLUME 8, ISSUE 9 MIMBRES MESSENGER PAGE 1 A F R E E C O M M U N I T Y N E W S L E T T E R SEPTEMBER 2016 MIMBRES MESSENGER Silver City Enterprise In our February issue, we reprinted an article from the Silver City Enterprise with promises of more to come. One of our avid readers and contributors to the Messenger, Mary Daniels, has been doing research and supplying us with some great articles. We have printed a few short articles as space has permitted. This month we have some extra space and found this article very entertaining. Hope you do as well. Apparently, there have always been some colorful folk in Grant County. The following article is reprinted from the Silver City Enterprise published on April 14, It is reproduced as originally written (misspellings, punctuation, etc.) with no editing. As this was originally written as all one paragraph, paragraph spaces have been inserted just to make the article easier to read. A CASE OF IGNORANCE AND DARK SUPERSTITION IN GRANT COUNTY In these days of supposed enlightenment with newspapers within the reach of everyone, the following incident must seem a vey strange one. For some time past, Miguel, son of Carlos Morera, justice of the peace at San Juan on the Mimbres river in this county, has been ill of malaria. The disease not responding to the crude medical treatment employed the family, became possessed by the idea that Miguel was bewitched by some enemy of the family. Intent upon the idea, the father, Carlos Morera, accused another Mexican named Savino Vaquera, of having bewitched his son, Miguel. Vaquera denied that he had done so, but said he knew who had bewitched the boy, telling him that it was a woman named Rosa Padilla. Morera issued an order last Friday for the woman to appear before him in his official capacity as justice of the peace, that the charge against her might be investigated. After herring evidence in the matter, Morera released the woman saying he had leaned sufficient evidence to bring the woman before the grand jury. After being released the woman, Rosa Padilla, went before Justice J.C. Crockett Givens at Central last Saturday and had the man Vaquera arrested for defamation of character and assault by words. Justice Givens, after hearing the evidence, sentenced Vaquera to pay a fine of fifty dollars and imprisonment for three months. He should have added ten years in an asylum for fools. During the investigation it was sworn to that the sick boy had vomited up large quantities of rocks and sticks, besides pins and needles enough to start a peddler in business, and that he had not swallowed the raw materials out of which these goods are manufactured. Now if that young man is importing pins and needles from some other world in direct contravention of then McKinley bill, we denounce it as a mean trick to evade the import duty ere the McKinley law is repealed, and we hereby call the attention of the internal, perhaps it were better to call on the infernal in this case) revenue officials to look into this matter and collect the import duty on the goods.

The Festival volunteers have been hard at work for several months, and there will be many new venues and activities this year. Because this growing season has been much better than last year, there should be plenty of produce and fruit on hand some of the latter likely showing up baked into pies for the Pie Contest! The San Lorenzo Elementary School will be serving lunch again this year, one of their biggest fund-raising events of the year. The Health Fair promises to offer a myriad of screenings and testing along with consultations and generally helpful advice in multiple areas. Both of these events will take place inside the school. Out on the field, there will be lots to see and do for all ages. This is truly a don t miss event. As you page through this issue, you will note that many other activities and programs have picked up in and around the Valley with the coming of the fall season. There seems to be something to attend or see or experience almost every day, if you have the time. The San Lorenzo Elementary students have some fun things going on and the Girl Scouts have resumed their weekly meetings. my mother canning during what always seemed to be the hottest days of the year, and in those days before air conditioning, it was plenty hot in her kitchen. But I also recall all the wonderful things we had to eat during the winter. Thankfully, the recent afternoon rains have not only helped the crops along, but cooled things down to a comfortable working level. We are still looking for items of interest from our readers. We have had a couple of positive responses recently, and are encouraged enough to keep on making this request. There are so many interesting folks in the Valley who have stories and histories that are fascinating and well worth sharing. Send us your thoughts, your stories, poems, funny observances or whatever tickles your fancy. We will help to get you published. Note: we need to have submissions from everyone (dates for meetings, events, etc.) including any proposed articles submitted as early as possible for the October Messenger in order to get it put together for on time publication. We will be very grateful to all contributors who get their copy and information to us by September 17th. 3 VOLUME 8, ISSUE 9 MIMBRES MESSENGER PAGE 3 Mimbres Culture Heritage Site (MCHS) News By Marilyn Markel Stop by the museum at MCHS to see the newly installed model of the Mattocks Ruin. Liz Mikols Entertains at the Mimbres Roundup Lodge By Marilyn Markel Local artist Bill Hudson created a model replica of what the world famous archaeological site might have looked like a thousand years ago complete with tiny little Mimbreῆos, plants, and other amazing details. Helped with information and maps from archaeologists, Bill worked diligently, spending hundreds of hours, to make the model a true rendition of the Mimbres pueblo. On a pleasant afternoon in August, a group of over sixty enjoyed a presentation by Liz Mikols titled Let Me Entertain You: Three madams of Silver City, Bessie, Lottie and Millie. The program was a fun, informative tale of earlier days a time when madams were an accepted part of the social fabric of southwest New Mexico. At least a few members of the audience lived in the area during that notso-long-ago bygone era and remembered Madam Mildred (Millie) Clark Cusey! Bill Hudson, creator of the model The Mimbres Culture Heritage Site is open daily 11:00 AM- 3:00 PM. Visitors and volunteers are always welcome! Liz chatting with attendees after the presentation The program was a fund-raiser event for the Mimbres Culture Heritage Site. Thank you to everyone who attended and thanks for the donations! 8 VOLUME 8, ISSUE 9 MIMBRES MESSENGER PAGE 8 Mimbreῆo Pets Smokey the Mattocks Cat by Marilyn Markel Smokey, AKA the Mattocks Cat, a friendly, gray-striped feline, is on his fifth home. Smokey was born just up the valley from the Mimbres post office about a year ago. His first owner had way too many cats, so Smokey and his brother, just youngsters, were given to a man that wanted some outdoor mousers. That man took the two cats to a ranch up the valley into the high country. Winter was on its way. When the temperature dropped, the man, the property caretaker, decided to head to warmer location, leaving the two young cats on their own outside, no food, and only the river for water. One day, the neighbor, walking by the ranch outbuildings, heard the cries of the hungry felines. Realizing the cats had been abandoned, the cat-loving neighbor was soon taking food and water down the road each morning, quickly getting attached to the brothers. The cats received lots of much-wanted love, and, of course, were soon following the neighbor home a home that already had five cats! After many trips back and forth, the brothers decided to stay at the new place. The boys were taken to the vet for shots and neutering. But all was not well. The gray-striped brother, an alpha Lone Mountain Natives Nursery We are local growers using organic practices! Knowledgeable consultation for thriving gardens. Smokey, the center of attention male, even after being neutered, could not get along with the cats already in residence. So, he found his next home with a kind-hearted fellow near Lake Roberts. But, Oh No! The traveling cat, once again, took a dislike to the cat at his new home. After a few months of cat fights and unhappiness on the part of the resident cat and her owner, the gray-striped cat, now called Smokey, was, once again, looking for a home. Well, as it happened, it was now the end of June, and the archaeologists and field school students staying at the Mimbres Culture Heritage Site were having a monumental mouse and rat problem! Setting out traps and watching mice scurry across the kitchen floor had become an unpleasant, daily occurrence. A cat could be the answer to the rodents. A feline to the rescue! So, Smokey is now the Mattocks Cat. He loves to join visitors as they walk along the interpretive trail through the Mattocks Ruin. He often greets people at the door to the museum, or can be seen stretched out across the volunteer s desk in the gift shop, or sleeping in his favorite spot- a pillow in a window. Maybe he has found a permanent home, at last. Support Pollinator Friendly Gardens! Buy pesticide free plants Go native! 9 VOLUME 8, ISSUE 9 MIMBRES MESSENGER PAGE 9 WHAT ARE YOU READING? When the Earth Shakes By Simon Winchester This is a book of true stories that do not have happy endings. It explains very clearly, with many drawings and photographs, the causes of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis. As scientists studied these events and learned more about their causes they knew the destruction could not be stopped but warning systems could be improved to help people escape the approaching danger. On pp you can find a website where you can hear!! the earthquake that caused the 2011 Honshu tsunami. You may think it unlikely that we would experience all of these destructive events here in the Mimbres Valley but when you visit the City of Rocks you can see evidence of what ancient volcanoes left behind when they erupted many years ago. As I was writing this review I heard about an earthquake that had just occurred in Deming!. While not very big and maybe not even felt, it is evident that the earth still moves everywhere. This book is not meant to frighten, but to help the reader appreciate the beauty and respect the power of our earth by caring for it in all the ways we can. Each month a new "mystery" picture will appear. See if you know where it is. Some will be easy and some challenging. We will let you know the following month where you can find the Mimbres Mystery. Where in the Mimbres can this be? What a delightful spot to fish, hug your sweetie or just reflect on life. REMEMBER ELMO AND ELLIE the retired pack mules who were featured in the April Messenger? It turns out that retired mules, just like the rest of us retirees, do not loll about with nothing to do. Elmo and Ellie appeared, in pack regalia, at the July 4 th parade in Polebridge, Montana, demonstrating their profession. The parade was flown over four times by a small plane. The horse ridden by the rider leading the mules was a bit discomfited by the first two overflights, but neither Elmo nor Ellie gave it the slightest notice. I had hoped to have a picture of the parade to include here, but time and distance have not cooperated. But the mules, as ever, cooperated fully, to the delight of parade watchers.
10 VOLUME 8, ISSUE 9 MIMBRES MESSENGER PAGE 10 Teen Ink- by Ajalaa Claussen THE BEAST The beast has awoken. It is suddenly pulled out of its deep sleep to the horrible sound that shatters its sleepy dreams and reminds it of only one thing. The beast opens its eyes and with such reluctance slowly begins to crawl out of bed. The crazy-eyed, curly-haired monster creeps toward the cracks of light that seep under her door and finally sums up the courage to open it. The light is too much. She squints and covers her eyes and runs toward the opening to the bathroom and shuts the door with a loud thump, trying to get rid of the daylight as if it were Western Meadowlark Meadowlarks have one of the loveliest bird songs heard in the West, it sounds kind of like a flute. You often see a meadowlark, with his black V on a yellow breast, perching on a fencepost. Meadowlarks love the open country and build their nests on the ground in thick grass. To help protect their eggs and young they have narrow paths leading through the grass to the nest. They feed mostly on insects in the summer such as grasshoppers, caterpillars and beetles. the monster. After attempting to chase away the day she begins to wake up a bit more and is able to move towards the mirror in a not so zombie-like fashion. Her hand reaches for her hairbrush and begins to brush through the tangled mess. Within seconds this wild beast begins to look human. After a slow process that eventually speeds up once she gains more consciousness, the unrecognizable frightening monster has transformed fully back into a young girl. The anomaly could only mean one thing: back to school. 17 VOLUME 8, ISSUE 9 MIMBRES MESSENGER PAGE 17 The Booster Club s upgrade and improvement plans have begun to show visible results, appropriately, at the entrance to the Lodge. New viga-style support posts were installed, correcting deterioration of what were surely the original posts; they are not only attractive, but reinforced support has helped correct a distinct sag in the porch roof. Now only really tall folks, or tall folks wearing their ten-gallon hats, will have to duck going onto the porch. Also, new custom-made handrails on the porch are not only functional, but works of art. The desert motif includes horseshoes, road runner and quail, in and around a zia-like design. Words do not do them justice. Next time you visit the Lodge, check them out for yourself. We extend our sincere thanks to our tireless and creative volunteer, (what else?) Barry Gray, for his superb efforts on behalf of the Lodge and the beautiful results. Thank you Barry! The Lodge s busy schedule of events has increased once again. After a year s hiatus, the Girl Scouts of the Southwest Desert, Troop 049 have resumed weekly meetings at the Lodge. For further information, attend a Monday weekly meeting between 5:15 pm and 6:15 pm. September is the usual time for the third quarterly Swap Meet at the Lodge. The Swap Meet will be held on September 10th, 3:00 am - 9 :00 pm. There will be the usual type of new and used items, plus one vendor has indicated they will be bringing some furniture. Come and enjoy a breakfast or lunch and socialize with your neighbors. A few vendor tables are still available.
