I, along with several others from Sherwood, enjoyed the fun, frolics and especially the food (the buffet was incredible) at Rainworth s Summer Fun evening. We played card bingo (see photos), risked life and limb in team games, had a quiz and we danced (boy did we dance) as they had a great disco!you may remember that my other task was to attend Hucknall U3A s Jazz Evening. Again it was very enjoyable but not good for the diet as there were dishes of popcorn and jelly babies on the tables. I think they were to give it a New Orleans Jazz atmosphere but they weren t needed 2

Neighbours like you make my dreams come true! Never having ventured on the previous Picnic in the Park events, due to other commitments, I didn t know what I was letting myself in for. The weather was warm and sunny, so placing our chairs under the trees provided the shade from the sunshine and the shelter when rain poured for a few minutes. I would only stay for an hour at the most I thought, but what a surprisei stayed for the whole event. I thoroughly enjoyed the singer, the bands and the games particularly as our Jane Lowe was the overall Winner of the Welly Wanging. I did a fair bit of talking bumping into people that normally I don t have the opportunity to have a chat with. There was something for everyone and I think other park users enjoyed our event as much as we did. I certainly never ever thought that I would see a candelabra in Rufford Park! On behalf of Sherwood U3A I and other members who attended would like to thank Rita Turner and her team of organisers, the members (including our Lynda and Marlene) who sat in a very hot marquee manning their stalls and showing us how talented U3A Members are and all of the stars who made the 2015 Picnic in the Park such a success. I suspect that we are all looking forward to the next one, I know I am. Margaret Taylor 5
What did you do in Lincoln?.. Watched a video about and saw Magna Carta. Toured prison, found it too clean and clinical. Lunch followed by visit to cathedral and search for tomb of Katherine Swinford, second wife of John of Gaunt and founder of the Tudor line. Tea in Chapter House and back to coach Hop on Hop off bus tour, lunch, boat trip up river from Brayford Pool and you have to go to Marks and Sparks.. I did everything on offer-saw the Magna Carta, prison with prisoners in isolation, audio guide for amazing castle walls walk, ate in the café, and a brilliant tour of the cathedral. Straight to castle for coffee, watched video of Magna Carta and saw document, around prison listening to detailed description of prisoners by guide, lunch in café, cathedral, then four of us went in a horse and carriage around the vicinity of the cathedral listening to history of Lincoln, brilliant. A rush back to the bus Best parts of the castle were climbing the observatory tower, fantastic views of the cathedral, and walking the walls using the fascinating audio guide - learned about the red light district among other things. Partook at a patisserie and later had a two scoop ice-cream, we all had two different flavours and we each had a taste of all of them!... On the day out in Lincoln I had morning coffee, toured the castle and Magna Carta, had lunch in the pub, went into town, did some shopping and walked by the waterside, back for an ice cream and another drink, a look at the Cathedral then home. A great day in great company thank you 6
HERITAGE Hall Farm, Linby On a sunny June afternoon, about 25 members of the heritage group met on the lawn in front of Hall Farm, Linby. The farm house has been there for at least 500 years, although parts of it may date back to the 13 th century. The building has three storeys, with the entrance door originally in the centre of the building although it was later moved and the original door converted to a window. Some of the windows have been blocked in. It was probably an old manor house and has very thick stone walls, up to 5 feet wide in places. At one end of the house there is still a spiral stone staircase inside. The current owners are the eighth generation of the Hardstaff family. This family have lived in the house for the last 300 years. The farm was a dairy and arable farm and provided milk for the local area until the 1960s. It is now an arable farm growing carrots, potatoes (for McDonald s), sugar beet and cereals. We were interested to hear a story about how pancakes came to be served on Shrove Tuesday. In the 9th century, Danish invaders were rampaging across England burning and looting. People who resisted were brutally killed. When the Danes reached Linby, the Saxon men hid in Sherwood Forest. They left the women in the village as they thought the Danes would not kill women. When the Danes arrived, they employed the women as slaves doing menial jobs. The women decided to get rid of the Danes on Ash Wednesday and, as a symbol of this pledge, they baked a flat cake (a pancake) on the day before. On Ash Wednesday the women killed all the Danes, the men then returned from Sherwood Forest to a peaceful village. Every year after that, pancakes were made on Shrove Tuesday to commemorate this act. Some people believe that is why we have pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, but it's just a story. To one side of the farmhouse is an old building which is the old stone dovecote where pigeons were raised to supply fresh meat and eggs. In front and to the left of the farmhouse is a pond containing some large fish. At the back of the main house there is a water wheel approximately 200 years old which still works. The water to the wheel was turned on and we went inside the building to see how the mechanism turned the grindstones. The mill is not used now, but the farmer demonstrated how the water wheel was used in the past to grind corn for animal feed. We were taken on a trailer ride to the nearby abandoned limestone quarry which was used to provide stone for Linby, Papplewick and Newstead Abbey. There are still remains of limestone kilns in the quarry and various abandoned shacks used by people who quarried the stone. It is now a nature reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. There are many different plants in the quarry including at least five different kinds of orchid. One of the farm buildings housed many types of old tractors which have been collected and restored over the years. One tractor was recovered from a bog on the Isle of Ewe in Scotland. Some of these old tractors can be seen at local ploughing competitions.thank you Sue for arranging an interesting afternoon visit. Robert Watts 7
INTEREST GROUPS COMMEMORATION- CRAFT 1 AND 2 When it had been decided that the craft groups would make bunting, I went back to the group to discuss what sort of bunting to make. We decided on make do and mend, using fabric we already had. One member also suggested knitting poppies as well. So we got to work, armed with a triangular template and red wool. We agreed to devote our January meeting to collect, finish off and join together our shapes. Sadly one of our members, Sue Wilkinson died in December so it was a sombre group who met in January. Not to be deterred we got on with the task in hand. This included colouring in some paper bunting which Sue had started with Helen Blythe. Another member of the group, Glennys Clarke suggested turning our knitted poppies into a wreath. So with this done and our bunting complete, we were ready to have our efforts displayed in Turner Hall. Terry Dillon Craft Group 1 Web site: sherwoodu3a-mansfieldwoodhouse.org.uk 8
