We also had Barry and Marie Lammle s daughter, Carrie and grandson, Davin attending. Allan Orr has some CDs from Wing Ding 38 for members who are interested. Bob Van nes presented pictures from his trip to Wing Ding during which he traveled to Mt Evans, the Highest paved road in the USA. Brian Hooker completed the 3-Flags after Wing Ding ending in Kimberly, BC. The 3- Flags for 2017 will start in Mexico again for the first time in several years and end in Abbotsford, BC. Harvey Matthews is looking for someone to help him with Two-Wheel Sunday in future years. While he will be able to attend meetings he is not going to be able to attend the event itself due to family events that are scheduled for the same week-end. This years event had over 8500 attendees and raised $5,392 for the Veterans Food Bank. The Levels Program is going to gain a new Level 5, details have not yet been announced. Gary and Susan Premech are stepping down from Chapter Directors to become our new Region Directors. Stu and Mary Ellen Hartt are to become our new Chapter Directors. Tracy and Elaine Boyda are to fill the currently vacant position of Assistant Chapter Directors. Thank you to those moving on and welcome to those stepping into their new roles. Our Chapter Christmas Party will be held December 10, see page 17 for details. Text & Photos by Lance Medcalf I, Lance Medcalf, had a chance to drop in on the BC-D chapter's dinner/meeting and put some faces to familiar names. Meet some new people and have a good time. They also had their annual show & shine for which Ricky's Restaurant supplied the prizes.

Wing Wag October 2016 Page 4 Pat Williams, Region J Director (out-going) W ell, it s now the end of September. The Region J Rally and Wing Ding38 are now over and it s back to normal. Time to get ready for the next adventure. The Region Rally was well attended in spite of the fact that Wing Ding was the next week. We had 140 for dinner, a good number that we were happy with. I understand that the area rides were very popular, as well as the observation ride. I wish I could have stayed for the observation ride. The group from Oklahoma in Region H, Bill Haggerty and I arrived in Billings on Sunday afternoon and some of us went to Cracker Barrel for dinner. Gotta have my Cracker Barrel! While there, we met up with several other wingers. The entire week of Wing Ding was loaded with fun packed activities. Starting with Monday for the officers' meeting, Tuesday for the Couple of the Year competition, Wednesday for the opening ceremonies and continuing on through the week with the talent show, seminars, rides, trade show, and much more. At closing ceremonies, I heard several Region J members mentioned. One of our members actually won one of the four shares of the prize pot. Total registered for this rally was 6,922 members. Region J had a good showing there. I haven t gotten the final numbers broken down by Region, but I ll try to put the number in my next article. Wing Ding 39 location was announced as taking place in Grapevine, Texas on the Labour Day weekend. Who is planning to go? The last time Wing Ding was held in Grapevine, it was a wonderful experience. I m still looking for a replacement for the position of Region J Director. Please think it over and let me know if you are interested. Also open are the positions of Region Treasurer and Region Membership Enhancement. It isn t too much work, and there are some perks involved. My 2013 Gold Wing with only 47,000KM is still for sale. Pictures and more information are available upon request. I need to sell it as I need the space in the garage, and I can t ride it. In the past couple weeks, there have been many changes in chapter level staff members. I would like to welcome the new staff as well as send out a big thanks to those who are stepping down. You are appreciated. My personal big news of the month is that I passed my motorcycle road test and now have a class 6 license. Now I can ride anytime I want with no restrictions. So excited. Yay me. During the trip to Red Deer and then to Billings and home, I put over 3500KM on the odometer and had a blast. What a difference it is, being on the front of the bike. The other news is that my house has sold and I ve purchased a townhouse. After a long and nerve-racking renovation project, I ll be moving in next week. Finally! There was to be an instructor training session October 1 in Revelstoke or Calgary area. That has been postponed until Spring as we didn t have enough time to get it organized. Stay tuned for more information. The session will be open to anyone who is interested in becoming a trainer for GWRRA. It is also geared to be a learning tool for those who are already instructors. There is a new way of teaching that involves more student participation. I ve seen the presentation and each seminar is a lot more fun for everyone. As we move forward with the plans, I ll keep you informed through your Chapter Directors. That s it for this month. Remember ATGATT and keep the rubber side down. Pat Williams, Region J Director

Wing Wag October 2016 Page 5 Roger Matas, Chapter AB-A Rider Education Coordinator A conversation about Safety with Alberta Health EMS. shouldn't be worn? Textile pants vs. leather, etc. Chapter AB-A Rider Education Coordinator Roger Matas recently sat down with Alberta Health EMS Public Information Officer and Paramedic Stuart Brideaux to talk about safety and motorcycle riding. Here is their conversation. Our group has an expression: ATGATT = All The Gear All The Time. As a membership, we are committing to following the rule. By that, we mean we should always be fully clothed when we're on our bike: helmet, long sleeves, long pants, eye protection, gloves. Obviously no shorts or flip flops. From the perspective of EMS and what you see at crash scenes, can you provide some advice on types of clothing which should/ Can you reinforce the need for the ATGATT rule? A common phrase EMS uses when speaking to injury prevention is, Wear the gear. This is largely a concept we use among youth to promote wearing helmets when cycling or lifejackets when on the water. ATGATT takes it even further by reinforcing an extremely important concept: All the gear, all the time. This is a highly advisable attitude to take towards riding. It is too late to realize today was the day you really should have had long pants or your eye protection once you ve already sustained an injury, particularly a preventable injury that would ve been avoided or minimized by wearing the gear. In other words, perhaps everything will truly be just fine- until the day it isn t. Another way to look at it is, ask yourself, what is it I am willing to trade?. Would you prefer to trade a little comfort in the short term and be a little hotter in sunny weather by wearing long pants for your ride? Or would you rather contend with severe road rash (abrasions and avulsions to the skin and underlying tissues) for weeks after even a minor collision for having worn shorts instead? Remember: the risk isn t always up to you, no matter how conscious you are of your safety and of those around you, you can t control other drivers. So even for the shortest outings, All the gear, all the time. Some of our members have taken a course called Medic Fist Aid. Others may have a course offered to them from work. Is there a role we can play at a crash site before EMS arrives? (Continued on page 6)

Wing Wag October 2016 Page 6 (Continued from page 5) Having a standard first aid/cpr/aed background is highly advisable from a riding safety standpoint. The more people that are trained, the higher the chances someone will be available to help in an emergency prior to EMS arrival. In an emergency situation, you may have several options. If you are alone, assure the person that you are going to get help. You will help them more by getting help on the way immediately than by just staying at their side. If there are several people at the emergency scene, instruct someone to call and then report back to you. Just ensure has truly been activated. Generally, unless there is a life-threatening reason you need to move an injured person, don t move or adjust the person; leave this to EMS. Taking comfort measures - providing blankets or other shelter, and ensuring no further harm can take place is best. Ensure the situation is safe. Examples of dangers are downed power lines, falling rocks, traffic, hostile drivers, or other violent behaviors, fire, smoke, dangerous fumes, extreme weather, entrapments, and deep or swiftly moving water. If any of these dangers are threatening, take extra precaution. Do not risk becoming a second patient. Leave dangerous situations to professionals, such as firefighters and police officers, who have the training to deal with them. Consider it a top priority to relay pertinent information as effectively as possible is trying to communicate and relay the information you give to them to the incoming EMS crews. So attempt to be as accurate and helpful as possible (under the circumstances). When you call 9-1-1, regardless of where you might be riding in Canada or the U.S., most dispatch systems will ask: 1. The exact address or location and the name of the city or town. By prepared to give the names of nearby intersecting streets (cross streets or roads), landmarks, the name of the building, the floor, and the room number. 2. The telephone number from which the call is being made. 3. The caller s name. 4. What happened - for example, a motor vehicle collision, a fall, a fire, sudden onset of chest pain, etc. 5. How many people are involved. 6. The condition of the victim(s) - for example, unconsciousness, chest pain, trouble breathing, bleeding. 7. The help (care) being given, if applicable. It may seem that the dispatcher asks a lot of questions but the information you give helps the dispatcher to send the type of help needed, based on the severity of the emergency. Once the ambulance is on its way, the dispatcher may stay on the line and continue to talk with you. Many dispatchers today are also trained to give what are termed prearrival instructions (PAIs) to be used before EMS personnel arrive. This can include first aid or other interventions. How about after EMS arrives? Other than stay out of the way? Assist EMS crews by waving or indicating to them from a distance where exactly you are. EMS may only have a general idea where you are when responding to an incident on a highway or secondary road, particularly if you re not near a cross-street. As well, callers sometimes mix up the direction of travel which may influence which direction incoming crews are responding from. When they arrive, direct them to the patient and answer their questions as best you can - (Continued on page 7)

Wing Wag October 2016 Page 7 (Continued from page 6) what happened, what did you see, what has occurred since the incident, what training do you have, what has been done for the patient, etc. Try to provide any pertinent past medical history the patient might have to EMS. Perhaps they have underlying medical problems which might explain how they lost control of their bike. Follow the instructions given by EMS, fire, or police on scene. They will ask/direct you to help as they feel appropriate. Not asking you to do crash scene analysis, but can you make any general observations from what you and Calgary EMS have seen on what we can do to be safer riders? Be proactive about your safety at all timesnever assume other motorists have seen or heard you. Watch your fellow riders and be mindful of other drivers who may appear distracted behind the wheel. Always ride in the most courteous manner you can. Choose your routes carefully and decide what gear you require for inclement weather or what contingencies you have for inclement weather. Do not ride beyond your comfort level or experience and remember fatigue, especially severe fatigue, functions like a form of impairment. Speaking of impairment (do I really need include this) don t consume alcohol or drugs if you re planning to head out on your bike! Some of our members have been told EMS and law enforcement will not open pockets or look in clothing for ID, so, they wear their license or other ID around their neck. Is the first part true? Is the second part necessary? EMS,fire, and police (particularly police) WILL search your person or the environment for your ID, 100% of the time, guaranteed. There s no harm in making yourself even more easily identified by wearing other ID bracelets or neck chains, but the goldstandard most first responders are after is your driver s licence or some other form of government ID. Sometimes it is difficult to access wallets through leathers or heavier clothing but sooner or later, police or RCMP will want to find what ID is on your person. To that end, EMS crews look for it as well. Along that line, there is a product called Epic ID which is a bracelet containing a USB memory chip. The chip can store personal and medical information. The concept is: when an emergency occurs EMS, and other first responders can plug the bracelet into the computers in their vehicles to view the information. I can only speak with certainty for AHS EMS but these wouldn t ever work with our computers. I don t know what research this company has done other than assuming you can simply plug a USB into literally any computer anytime and it ll be fine. Unless we re the only ones who can t use these and the entire rest of the US can. But I kind of doubt that. It s a great idea in philosophy but this product didn t come from an emergency service, it came from a third party in the business of making money. Yes, emergency responders check for medic alert tags, etc. but the only info we d ever get off these particular devices is what s engraved on the outside. That s not to say someone wouldn t try to plug it into a hospital desktop computer, but even then encryption might be an issue. Additionally, it would only be of benefit in an emergency if, beyond absolutely any shadow of a doubt, the information on the stick truly belonged to you. Otherwise, the best you d hope for is they took it with a grain of salt. Having said that, that s why doctors go to school so that they can figure out what s wrong with you using all their own diagnostic abilities. So the further along you go down the emergency continuum (ambulance, (Continued on page 8)

Wing Wag October 2016 Page 8 (Continued from page 7) ER, OR, ICU) the less value the stick is. Again - this wasn t a health care invention, it was someone else who came up with it. One possibility I could see these of benefit is in non-emergent situations. Like if you had it on you and were actually able to assist a medical professional access it, I m sure they d read it, but also they would more likely go through it with you to confirm every detail before taking it as correct (also assuming there s something pertinent on it other than allergy to penicillin, etc.) These could be good for keeping your general medical history on if you were moving a lot or changing family doctors. But even then, I m speaking on their behalf now and would wonder what they thought about these. There is no harm in having it, but keep in mind its limitations. Have you or any of the other Paramedics come across a crash scene which presents a lesson for motorcycle riders? Some broad trends I have noted in my career, some which may not really apply to your particular group include: Riders too keen to be on the roads in early spring putting their bikes down when they encounter gravel. Young/novice riders on bikes too powerful or aggressive for their level of experience. Riders of all types using their bikes for short/quick errands and not wearing the gear = severe road rash, fractures, other soft tissue injuries. Riders in groups or twosomes riding inappropriately causing other motorists to focus on one rider at the expense of another. Riders doing overtly dangerous (read: stupid) things such as passing on shoulders or skirting up the middle of traffic between lanes. Riders travelling at speeds so excessive other motorists have zero time to react or avoid a collision. Fundamentally the one lesson I d want to reinforce is ATGATT and common sense. People travelling inside cars with their seatbelts on routinely suffer injury or death if a collision is severe enough. Transfer that same mechanism to a rider and you can extrapolate the severity. Be your own best safety advocate for yourself and all your fellow riders. 11 Wing Wag October 2016 Page 11 Text by Bart Looijen, Photos by Bruce Buckley & Roger Matas It was a mixed bag of weather the week leading up to September 26 th. Photos of over 10 inches of snow on a picnic table in Lake Louise (on Monday) to charts showing snow accumulation on the Bow Summit (on Friday) to forecasts of clear and sunny weather on Saturday and Sunday. In Sundre, Wayne and his wife Linda rode up on their trike a couple of minutes after we got there. Following a round of introductions, we split into two groups and headed north again. Wayne took us through Caroline and found a couple of nice turns to sweep through en-route to Rocky Mountain House. In Rocky, the plan was to meet up with the members of the AB C (Innisfail) group at the Timmy s. Wayne was unsure of their numbers but ten minutes later Milt S., Terry J., Gareth P. and Russell B. arrived. Introductions, a bit of chit-chat over our coffee/meal and we hit the road west to the big rocks. Photo by Bruce Buckley The colours were more muted along this route (probably due to the colour changing a week or two before the southern trees), but the Tamarack trees did their best to add their vibrant colour to the landscape. The call to ride did go out and six hardy riders left the Fox Hollow golf course at 09:00 hours ± 2 minutes. Bruce B., Gideon L., Zeph W., Sandy M., Roger M., and Bart L. (me) with temperatures in the single digits headed north on QE II, breaking off onto Beddington Trail, and up Symon s Valley. We were treated to beautiful hues of red, orange, and yellow heading up the valley towards Highway 567. Turning west the vistas were even better and the horizon expanded with the numerous valleys, hills, and mountains in the distance. A quick stop at the Shell station at Highway 22 to make sure that everyone had enough thermal gear on and we throttled up Highway 22 heading to Sundre. As we rode west the winds were starting to pick up along with the temperatures, I noticed that we hit 15ºC, it was getting downright balmy! Approaching Lake Abraham the winds were becoming quite pronounced and most of the leafbearing trees had given up their colours to the seemingly relentless winds. It was at the Mount Michener viewpoint that we stopped for a stretch Bit of a back story here; seeing as we were riding through GWRRA AB C turf I thought it would be great opportunity to let them know we were coming and invite them to join us for all or part of the ride. I contacted their Director Wayne Renfert and he said he would forward the invite to their members. Photo by Roger Matas (Continued on page 12)

Wing Wag October 2016 Page 12 (Continued from page 11) Photo by Roger Matas break and some chances for photos; we were starting to see the snow line a couple of thousand feet above the valley floor. One of the Innisfail guys said that this was as close as he wanted to get his bike to snow, not too sure if this was the impetus to head east but this is where our friends from Innisfail got the best mileage using the tailwind to their advantage heading home. The six of us from Calgary tightened our chin straps, hunkered down behind our windscreens and headed into the wind to Saskatchewan Crossing. So far we have been riding in sunny skies, but as soon as we were in the park a few water bugs started to hit the front of our bikes, oh-oh. This along with the low hanging clouds amongst the mountain peaks, and dropping temperature had me wondering. Note to self, if you can go another 80 km on your fuel supply do so and fuel in Lake Louise, regular gas was over $6.00/gallon ($1.59/liter) at Sask. X-ing. A quick pit stop at the X-ing and we were on the homeward side of the ride, now the fall colours were a rarity and mainly on the smaller shrubs and bushes near the highway, the evergreens dominated the hillsides. Traffic was fairly light and despite the posted speed there were four wheelers that needed to drive over the limit though the park. We reached the Bow Summit and were greeted with temperatures in the middle single digits and no evidence of the snow accumulations (insert happy smile). The highway crews are working hard to finish up the addition of passing lanes (on hills) and repairing the asphalt through this area, this will be great when all done. Lake Louise brought the rush of traffic on the four-lane and everyone in a hurry. Discussion on the CB (as not all of us had CB's) prompted me to call an unscheduled stop at Redearth rest stop to ensure everyone was on the same page, a couple of the guys were slabbing home and the balance of the group would take 1A home. We didn t even make the Banff power plant and the traffic came to a grinding halt, from there it took us over an hour to cover the distance to the gate due to a truck and trailer wreck. The delay stymied our plan for riding the 1A as we all wanted to "get home". We made good time for the balance of the ride, saying our farewells over the radio. Speed and traffic took our attention for this leg of the trip and the colours along Highway 1 were not as noticeable. Photo by Bruce Buckley All in all, it was an enjoyable day with good company and connecting with people who have a common interest. Thanks to our friends from the North for joining in on the ride, and let s do this kind of trip again.

Wing Wag October 2016 Page 13 Ron Syroishka, Chapter AB-A Special Events Coordinator K eeping with tradition once again, I will be sponsoring the Bearberry Fall Turkey Dinner Ride. For those of you who have not participated in past years here is a short history lesson. History: Many people from all over the world settled in Bearberry in the early years of the last century. Many of their families still live in our area. During the last two decades more and more people from the cities moved to Bearberry because of the peace and quietness here. Cattle, coyotes, and domestic wildlife are part of our community as well. We estimate approximately 130 households are part of the Bearberry area. Don't look for high rise buildings... the "downtown" is marked by the Community Hall, the Heritage & Arts Centre, and the Saloon. Sorry, at the moment we don't have a gas station, so please fill up in Sundre before you come to Bearberry! Date: Sunday, October 16, 2016 Location: Bearberry Community Centre, located 25 km west of Sundre at the base of the foothills in southwest central Alberta and close to the east border of Banff National Park. Meeting place: Fox Hollow Golf Club House, we will leave at 10:00 a.m. Rain or shine. Dinner: 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. Country style turkey dinner with all the fixings, and all the dessert you can eat. This is an all you can eat event. Costs: Adult - $15; children (6 12 years) - $6; 5 and under free. Pay at the door. Everyone is welcome, you can travel by motorcycle or motor vehicle your choice. If you are planning on joining us please Ron Syroishka at telus.net or call by Friday, October 14, Riding Strong & Free, Ron Syroishka
