Vol.2 No.3 Fall 2018 FOHL meets at the Howell Library on the second Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m. Monmouth County Library Howell A Branch of the Monmouth County Library System 318 Old Tavern Road, Howell, New Jersey A Message from the President Catherine McKee Howell History: 1801 to 1967 Howell Township was named for Governor Richard Howell, who served as the third governor of New Jersey from 1792 to His daughter married Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy. Howell Township was formed from territory taken from Shrewsbury Township, under an Act of Assembly, passed in This land included, in addition to its present area, all of what is now Wall Township, Lakewood Township, Brick Township, and the boroughs along the Atlantic Ocean from Barnegat Inlet to the Shark River Inlet at Belmar. In 1850, Ocean County was formed and took from Howell what is now Brick and Lakewood Townships and the boroughs along the Atlantic Ocean south of the Manasquan Inlet. In 1851, Wall Township was created from all the land between present Wall and the Howell boundaries to the Atlantic Ocean. Farmingdale 1

Borough was formed in the central part of Howell Township in Another parcel was taken from Howell s southern part in 1927 and joined to Lakewood Township in Ocean County. Sections of Howell Township: 1. Lower Squankum lies in the southeast part of the township on the Manasquan River. In 1820, a man named Lloyd owned a grist mill here. In 1834, there were two taverns, a store, a Friends Meeting House, two mills, and 12 to 15 dwellings. A historic Quaker cemetery still remains near where the old meeting house once stood. A school house was built in the area in West Farms, formerly known as New Bargaintown, is located near the center of the township. A mill was built there in Marl was discovered, and a business called the Squankum Marl Company was incorporated in Marl is a calcium carbonate, lime rich mudstone, which was mined in central New Jersey. In the 1800 s, marl was in high demand for farmers as a soil conditioner. The discovery of marl raised land prices in the West Farms area. The Squankum Marl Company built a railroad between Freehold and Farmingdale in Blue Ball, a small village on the western line of Howell adjoining Freehold Township, contained a tavern and store, a Methodist church, and ten to twelve dwellings in the early 1800 s. The name Blue Ball was later changed to Turkey, and, then changed to Adelphia. 4. Bethel is located in the southwest part of the township. A post office named Southard was established in the early 1800 s. The mail was brought from Lakewood once a week by horse and buggy. A Methodist church was built there in In 1870, a school was also constructed. 5. Jerseyville is located in the northwest corner of Howell. It was a small hamlet originally called Green Grove. In 1854, the inhabitants met to choose a new name and they voted to call this section Jerseyville instead. 2

6. Farmingdale was traditionally part of Howell. The town originally formed along what is now Main Street. In the days before Europeans settlers arrived here, it was used by native Americans as a summer path to the sea shore, where they fished and hunted. The village was known as Marsh s Bog from before the Revolutionary War until The name was then changed to Upper Squankum. A post office was established in The name of the town was changed to Farmingdale in In 1903, Farmingdale separated from Howell and became a borough. Historic Sites: Our House Tavern stands at the bend of Adelphia Farmingdale Road/ County Route 524. It was part of the social, political, and criminal history of the Howell community. It has been operated as a restaurant in recent years. It was built in 1747 as an inn. It was originally named Marriner s Tavern after the inn s original owner George Marriner. During the Revolutionary War, patriots, as well as Tories, were said to have enjoyed the food and drinks served at the inn. Around that time period, the Pine Robbers were active in the vicinity. Members of this gang included Lewis Fenton and a Mr. Fagan. The tavern was their meeting place. The gang was implicated in robberies, beatings, and murders of local residents. Eventually, the leaders were rounded up and slain by the local militia. Peace then returned to the area. The Preventorium building opened in It was situated on land donated by Arthur Brisbane, a wealthy Hearst newspaper man and philanthropist. The goal of the Preventorium was to provide a healthy environment for children who came from inner city apartments, where they were exposed to tuberculosis. The theory was that removing the children from the crowded, unhealthy conditions in the city and providing them a healthy country location with lots of fresh air would prevent them from contracting tuberculosis. The original capacity of the building was 80 beds. This was subsequently increased to 230 beds. There were four school rooms on the property. Eventually, the building was closed. In later years, this building was renovated to become the Howell Township municipal building.. 3

Howell Station was a railroad station located on Howell Road midway between Farmingdale and Freehold. In 1886, the Squankum Marl Company built a railroad between Farmingdale and Freehold which merged with a railroad line which ran from Farmingdale to Squan Village. These two railroad lines then merged with the Freehold and Jamesburg Agricultural Railroad. Subsequently, United Canal and Railroad acquired all three in 1897, and leased the property to the Pennsylvania Railroad. Once one of Monmouth County s most important potato loading centers, the Howell Station has since nearly vanished. A private residence now occupies the site By 1967, Howell Township had changed considerably since the time of its incorporation in The population had increased to about 16,000. Housing developments had sprung up, including Aldrich Estates, Ardmore Estates, Farmingdale Park, Freewood Acres, and Candlewood. The township was served by post offices in Farmingdale, Lakewood, Adelphia, and Freehold. There was an active police reserve and the State Police had a station on Adelphia Farmingdale Road. In 1851, there were nine school districts with one or two room school houses. These schoolhouses were located in Adelphia, Jerseyville, Ardena, Fort Plains, West Farms, Squankum, Bethel, North Farmingdale, and Bedford. Most were sold and were turned into private residences. In 1939, a consolidated school was opened at Ardena with 509 pupils. Edith M. Griebling was the first principal there. By 1967, there were seven new buildings: Southard, Land O Pines, Edith M. Griebling School, Ramtown, Aldrich, and Taunton. Information for this article was obtained from History of Howell. This book was written by Ardena School teacher Alma Donahay and her eighth-grade class of

Beth Henderson, Howell Library Branch Manager Lifelong Learning Starts Here Libraries generally celebrate September as National Library Card Sign-up Month. Promoted by the American Library Association, this event was designed to remind parents that a library card can open educational doors for their children and encourage lifelong learning. Lifelong is the key word here. We still have patrons who come into the library reminiscing about the township s original library in the basement of the municipal court building on Adelphia-Farmingdale Road, which opened in April We hear tales of the bookmobile. The Howell Library moved into its current location at 318 Old Tavern Road in July Much has changed in the world of libraries during these 44 years. We still have books for all ages, magazines and newspapers. Through technology these items now are available electronically via resources such as OverDrive, Libby, Kanopy, Flipster and RB Digital all available on the Monmouth County Library s homepage with your library card. We provide mobile printing from your electronic device to our printer a great option if your printer at home is not working or you re working in the library from your laptop. Online resources have replaced, for the most part, the large tomes of the library s reference collection. Aside from the traditional research on the library s homepage, you can access Lynda for computer and professional training; Transparent Language or Rosetta Stone for language learning (Kidspeak for the younger set); and Universal Class which offers more than 500 continuing education classes. Other electronic resources address business research and investment interests. And, there are more which aren t listed here. Visit to access this information. Select the Research tab, and open the first option: Databases for Articles, Digital Reference Books, and Online Learning. Then, enjoy! Some things about the library haven t changed, however. We offer storytimes for children, a book club for adults and a variety of informational and educational programs throughout the year. 5

So, as we celebrate National Library Card Sign-up Month, invite a friend to visit the library with you and register for a library card. Set an example for your children or grandchildren by obtaining and using your own library card. If you already have a library card and haven t stopped in recently, come by and check out what s new. We re waiting for you! FOHL BOOK SALE COMMITTEE Eileen Lynch, Chairperson The FOHL book sale has really grown. It is open everyday during regular library hours. We accept donations of new and gently used paperback and hardcover fiction and non fiction books, children's books, DVDs and CD's. The money we receive from the sale of these items is used to provide programs and equipment for Howell Library. We are unable to accept encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines, VHS and audio cassettes, jigsaw puzzles, games of any kind and electronic game systems. The lobby area of the library is used for displays. Currently the display is "Back to School". The book racks hold Children's and Teen's books. New and popular Adult books are also found here; some with prices as low as $1.00. On the long table are movie and TV DVDs for as low as $1.00 to $2.00 There are also music CD's for $1.00. The small room around the corner contains shelves with older fiction and non fiction books, mostly hard cover. There are also two wooden cabinets with children's and teen books and spinner racks with small paperbacks located there. Please remember to stop by and check out our book sale area whenever you are at a program, a movie, or a regular library visit." 9 Assume You Are the Only One Who Will Reach Out. Most people want to be there for others in a crisis. But fear of not saying or doing the right thing gets in the way. Fear of saying or doing something that could make things worse. Fear of not knowing how to find help for a person in need. Talk Saves Lives is a presentation about what signs to look for, what to do, and how to find the right help for someone in crisis. Talk Saves Lives will be presented by Mary Fowler, program director, Upstream Suicide Prevention Program, RWJBarnabas Health Institute for Prevention & Recovery.
