GREEN ROOM Road Trip Nothing says summer quite like a family road trip but this year, save your money for that extra large funnel cake at Cedar Point rather than throwing it away on gas. are some great tips to help maximize your car s fuel efficiency: Drive the speed limit. For most cars from sedans through midsized SUVs, maximum fuel efficiency on the highway is between 40-60mph. Increasing your speed from 55mph to 65 mph, for instance, can actually decrease your car s fuel efficiency by 10-15% - that s like adding an extra $0.40 to every gallon of gas! Use your A/C. You might not think it, but studies have shown that using your A/C rather than rolling all the windows down can actually be more fuel efficient when driving at speeds greater than 50mph. When you roll the windows down and let air in, it creates drag and forces your car to exert more effort to maintain speed. Note: This only applies above ~50mph. When driving around your neighborhood, it s much more fuel efficient to lower the windows than blast the A/C. Use Cruise Control. A lot of fuel is spent when changing your car s speed either stepping on the accelerator or braking. When you have an open road ahead of you, engage the cruise control and keep yourself from constantly tapping the pedals. Just be sure not to fall asleep if the kids fussing in the back seat doesn t keep you alert, try an audio book or a rousing game of I Spy. Lose the Extra Pounds. The heavier your car is, the more gas it takes to move it. If you have extra equipment, tools, or a collection of vintage barbells in your trunk, leave them at home before you hit the road.
