Edgar Daivid Gonzalez, 47, left his home near the Novelo s Convention Center in Santa Elena Town at around 4 o clock on the evening of Sunday, August 8, enroute to his workplace at Belize Western Energy Limited compound in Belmopan to take over the 6:00 p.m. shift. The presence of his lunch bag on the worksite indicates that he arrived at work and it was from there that he went missing. The initially unidentified body, in an advanced state of decomposition clad in a black T-shirt, black long pants over a red short pants SANTA ELENA TOWN, Cayo District, Wednesday, September 15, 2010: Cozy Corner Bar, located on La Loma Luz Boulevard in Santa Elena Town, was the scene today of a third successful burglary with no arrests. Manuel Smith, 55, Belizean, businessman of a San Ignacio Town address, reported to police that he secured and left the his business place at around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 14, and when he returned at around 11:30 a.m. the following day, he noted that is building was broken into. An inventory of the stolen items includes 12 cases Belikin Beer, 18 bottles of assorted liquor,10 tins Natural milk, 1 cartoon cigarettes, 12 bottles soft drinks and 11 cans Pringles potato chips among other small items all for an estimated total of $1,820. Upon checking the building, Smith observed that entry was gained through a side window. The burglar bar was pulled from its anchor and two wooden louvers were removed. The unsecured condition of a side door and visible trampling of the grass in that area suggests that the items were removed from the building via that route. So far, none of the items have been recovered. Smith informed that this is the third time his place was burglarized with the previous incident occurring just six weeks ago. The trail left behind suggests that the same persons might be responsible for this latest incident as empty soft drink bottles and food cans were Please Turn To Page 15 Edgar Daivid Gonzalez, 47 and a pair of brown Rodeo brand leather high shoes, was found at around 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 13, by handymen from Caves Branch Resort mile 13 on the Hummingbird Highway, in a creek about two miles off the Galvez Farm Road in Ringtail Village also on the Hummingbird Highway. An on-the-spot post mortem examination conducted by forensic specialist, Dr. Hugo Sanchez, shortly after the discovery on Monday, concluded that the cause of death was as a result of severe head injury due to a fractured skull resulting from a blow to the head with a blunt instrument. 2 Page 2 - STAR - Tel: & starnewspaper@gmail.com - Sunday, September 19, 2010 We live and work in a small community where everyone basically knows each other and their family. It is in this regards that we continue to receive reports of some persons expressing the feeling of resentment whenever we report on their being arrested and criminally charged. In response to these expressions of resentment, we continue to maintain that WE DO NOT MAKE THE NEWS, all we do is report it. Therefore, if these persons do not make the news, we simply will not have it to report as we cannot go out there and invent it. We long for that ideal situation where there would hardly be any crime news to report as less persons get hurt, lose their lives, their liberty and their properties. Like one young man recently said; If it were not for the STAR Newspaper, far less persons would have known that I was arrested and charged for burglary. In these instances we have always tried to convey the message that, while our primary objective is to keep readers informed, we steadfastly seek to be a deterrent for those with criminal intent as they shy away from the negative publicity. There are some policemen, for example, who are steering clear of engaging in the brutal treatment of detainees which, apart from possible disciplinary action, they are fully aware that their Commanding Officer is not the type to keep the information from us. This has therefore contributed towards minimizing incidents of police brutality. On the other hand, we get that deep feeling of satisfaction in those instances when a young man would tell us that he could have been involved in a criminal activity we reported and that his picture could have been right there with the rest but that he instead chose to part ways with the group because he did not want his photograph to appear in the STAR. Or like for example the recent case of that young man who was walking up the street one night with a rowdy group of boys in his age range when he suddenly turned back and told us that he decided to instead part ways with the group and return home because it looks like the group was looking for trouble and that he would not like for his name and picture to appear in the STAR for a criminal charge. While we appreciate that there are some criminal elements who could care less about their names and photographs appearing in the newspaper, there is still that vast majority among us who will always stay away from all forms of negative publicity and in so doing contribute to a safer community. This is why we are of the opinion that the July 23, 2010, shooting death of Efrain Cruz, should have never happened. The deceased and the accused are no strangers in the community. One went to the grave and the other went to jail. Efrain, as many will attest, was a loving father to his children, his death was a tremendous loss to his family. This reality struck us like a ton of bricks with the opening of the new school year on September 1. Efrain s two young sons attend the same primary school as our son. He was the kind of father who religiously dropped off his boys on his motorcycle in the morning, picked them up at lunch time, dropped them off after lunch and picked them up at end of each school day every single day. To this very day we still see the confusion on the boys face as that routine in their young lives was suddenly yanked away from them. On the other hand, the accused, known as a cool dude, is a successful tour operator, managing a growing tour business, creating employment and economic activity in the community. Today, while his business continues to operate, it is doing so without his personal touch simply because he is behind bars for an incident that could have been averted if only one of them had walked away and gone home that night. As we prepare to celebrate the 29 th Anniversary of our young nation s independence, we take this opportunity to wish Belizeans at home and abroad a truly Happy and Safe Independence Day while at the same time issuing a challenge to all: Please, please, make it hard for the STAR Newspaper to publish your name and photograph in a negative manner as we stand United and Proud Moving Forward We Are All Belize. 10 Page 10 - STAR - Tel: & starnewspaper@gmail.com - Sunday, September 19, 2010 By: Wellington C. Ramos September 21, 2010 marks the 29th anniversary of Belize s independence a time when nationalistic pride peaks in Belize. It is my view however that despite the level of nationalistic pride, Belizeans are not as nationalistic as the Jamaicans are. One of the reasons for this view is because Guatemala is still claiming Belize and some Belizeans think that this claim will remain an everlasting dispute until we give Guatemala some land. Another reason is that there are many Belizeans who, for many years, are unsuccessfully trying to get a piece of land to call their own. Yet, they are witnessing foreigners coming into their country and taking and purchasing huge tracks of lands to live and to farm. People generally indentify themselves with land and when they have it, they will be more than willing to put their lives on the line for it. Our government should now begin the process of ensuring that every natural born Belizean is given a piece of land so that they can raise their family and grow the food they eat. This will serve to increase Belizeans nationalism because they will have something tangible to hold onto. Thirty two years ago I migrated from Belize to live in the United States of America. When I first arrived in New York City, I came upon a group called the Freedom Committee chaired by Mr. Compton Fairweather. This group held weekly Sunday meetings in the basement of a Methodist Church on Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn. Other officers of the committee included Muriel Laing, Walford Young, Derrick Staine, Leotin Staine-Lewis, Mary Stuart-Flowers, Mr. Trapp and several others. These Officers would give speeches about their lives when they were living in Belize and how beautiful Belize is. The room was packed with mostly elderly people. The main purpose of this group was to make sure that Belize remains a free country with all its territory intact. At the end of the meetings, I would go around and engage in discussions with some of the people in attendance and to my surprise, many of these people were not prepared to return home and some of them had no intentions to permanently return to Belize. In addition to this organization, there was a Telephone Belize News where Belizeans could call every Tuesday at midnight to get updated news, entertainment events and death announcements. Belizeans living in America looked forward to this day to make their telephone calls. After years of service to the community, Mr. Fairweather retired and returned to Belize to live. The association and the Belize News no longer exist and Belizeans are still talking about the news and did nothing to replace it until the arrival of instant communication via the information superhighway provided by the internet. Prior to the Independence of Belize, the two main political parties in Belize held different positions. The United Democratic Party wanted independence with a defense guarantee from Great Britain. The People s United Party wanted independence with or without the guarantee and felt that with support from the international community, Belize would survive. The then Prime Minister of Great Britain, Margaret Thatcher, was getting rid of most of Britain s oversees territories. She felt that the countries created a huge financial burden to the British government and its people. Belize s Prime Minister at the time, the Rt. Hon. George Cadle Price was told by the British that Britain will leave their troops in Belize for an indefinite period of time. A couple years later, the British government started to withdraw it troops and the Guatemalans started to reclaim Belize up to this day. Today, Belizeans are living with this constant threat of a Guatemalan invasion. Guatemalans are known to trespass on Belizean soil to steal Mayan artifacts and other valuables forest resources. The Guatemalan military does nothing to stop their citizens from crossing the border into Belize. The governments of Belize and Guatemala signed an agreement in 2008, to advance the territorial dispute to the International Court of Justice. In this agreement, both countries pledged to conduct a simultaneous referendum in their respective countries to ratify the agreement. If any of these two countries fail to ratify it, then the whole process will be stalled. The Guatemalan Congress recently ratified the agreement after the Belize government did so several months ago. It will be up to these two governments to now bring this agreement to their people in the form of a referendum. Both countries will be having elections soon and whether these governments would like to bring this controversial issue to a vote by their people is still left to be seen. In the meantime Belizeans will be jumping and parading all over the country as they celebrate the 29 th anniversary of their independence from Britain but when the jumping up and parades are finished, Belize will still be in the same position it was before all the celebrations began. Belizean nationalism can only come through implementing an on-going nationalism program to educate our children and people. First, they must be proud to be Belizeans and have reasons to state why being a Belizean is a lot better than being anything else. For me, I am proud to be a Belizean because this is the country of my birth. The American government can always take away the citizenship status they gave me but the Belize government cannot deprive me of my Belizean birthright. In fact, I dare any Belizean to try to take away my Belizean citizenship rights and privileges. Belizeans living in the Diaspora should start thinking positive about Belize especially given our experiences living in America today. If you do not want to have anything to do with Belize, it might be a decision you may later live to regret. As a former member of the Belize Police Force, I have placed my life on the line for Belize. I have likewise served in the American Armed Forces where I received training that prepares me to defend my country if it is invaded by any other country on earth. While victory against the enemy might seem impossible, I would not be able to carry on with my life if I stood there and did nothing against an enemy invasion. A true citizen is one who is willing to pick up arms and shed his or her blood in defense of his country. If we can get more Belizeans to think like this, our nationalism would be second to none.

Jeovani Ortega and Patrick Lisbey are originally from the George Price Avenue area of Santa Elena Town. They are visiting from Los Angeles on the occasions of this year celebration of the 29 th Anniversary of the Nation s independence. In making the donation Jeovani and Patrick informed that it was their pleasure to assist the youth as they are an important and integral part of the community. Benjamin Ming Perez, Santa Elena I Fear & I Pray For My Safety Dear Editor; Many of us have made several unsuccessful attempts to get permanent lights on the Hawksworth Bridge for the safety and security of pedestrians using the crossing at night. Quite a large number of unreported robberies have taken place on this bridge for which the darkness plays an important. With very limited escape route, victims are easily cornered on the bridge. We are very fortunate that up to today no one has been killed on the bridge. In the past, some lights were installed on the bridge by BEL but they did not last very long because they were broken by the criminals who do the robbery on the bridge. I am asking if Mr. Chester Willimas, the new police chief could use his expertise in matters of security to recommend to the relevant authorities to install more durable lights and also to capture those criminals who are breaking the lights. I am a boledo/lottery vendor and I must pass this bridge every night. I fear and I pray for my safety. Although he was alive for at least thirty one days prior to the discovery of the decomposed body bearing forensic evidence of not being dead for more than four days, that lingering question remains: Where was he during those unaccounted 31 days. Did Edgar voluntarily stay away from his family for those 31 days? Was he held against his will all those days? Was he killed on the spot where he was found? Was he killed elsewhere and dumped at that spot? Who could have committed this act and WHY? Edgar David Gonzalez, a native Santa Elena boy who grew up on Carmen Street, is predeceased by his parents Carmela and Andres Gonzalez and one brother, Lloyd Gonzalez. He is survived by sisters, Amira and Estella Gonzalez; brothers, Amin, Eddy, Orlando, Omar and Noel. He is also survived by common-law-wife, Maria Ochoa; five children, David Edgar, Sharette Elizabeth, Stephanie Elizabeth, Edgar David Jr and Adrian Gonzalez. While the discovery of Edgar s body has provided closure for the family, it is not the kind that they were hoping and praying for. Edgar was born in Santa Elena, Cayo, on September30, He would have celebrated his 47th birthday at the end of this month. May his soul rest in peace. From Front Page conclusion of the post mortem examination the body was buried on the spot where it was found, after which Belmopan police began looking into their missing persons file. In the process of a subsequent investigation, the digital images; on the police camera, were shown to the spouse of the deceased, Maria Ochoa, who instantly recognized the shoes as the one that Edgar was wearing when he left home for work that Sunday evening thirty five days ago. The previously unidentified body was subsequently tagged with an identity and the case of the missing Edgar David Gonzalez was upgraded to a murder investigation. The mystery behind this incident, is that while the deceased was missing for thirty five days, he never once contacted the family From Front Page again left behind on the counter. After the first and second incident, the two windows through which entry was gained, were subsequently blocked off and replaced as a solid wall. Apart from the three robberies Smith informed that he has also experienced two robberies while customers were inside the bar. Notwithstanding these setbacks, Smith informed that he will continue operating the business while seeking to secure his investment in stock. San Ignacio police is asking anyone with information on this and any of the other numerous burglaries, especially of private homes, to please contact personnel from the Crimes Investigation Branch at the San Ignacio police station.
