4 Page 4 - STAR - Tel: & starnewspaper@gmail.com - Sunday, October 17, 2010 By: Wellington C. Ramos When it was reported a week ago that planes secretly landed at the Belize International Airport with Chinese nationals passing through Belize to the United States as their final destination it was no news to other Belizeans and myself. For years now Chinese and people from various other countries have been coming to Belize as a transit point to continue their destination to the United States because of Belize s geographic location to the United States. Not only are they coming through Belize but also Mexico and Canada which borders the United States. It was not until after the 911 disaster that the United States government decided to make a serious effort to crack down on illegal aliens coming into their country. Prior to this incident, America was not proactive in enforcing their immigration laws and some Americans believe that the Immigration Officials are still not forceful enough. Despite the economic problems thatthe United States is experiencing, people from most countries in the world still yearn to reach the shores of America because of the freedom and opportunities that exist in that country. Belize and other countries in the world must end political victimization which is one of the main reason why people leave their countries to come to the United States. The lack of economic opportunities is another reason but in the case of China which is doing well, Chinese are still running to America because of the repressive regime that China has. Many Belizeans living in the United States left Belize because when their party lost the election, they were fired, harassed or victimized to the point where they could not take it anymore and had to leave the country. Yet, the Belize governments boast about the democracy that prevails in Belize. The People s United Party and the United Democratic Party must find a way to end political victimization in Belize. In March of 2007, I was at home relaxing listening to my favorite radio station National Public Radio (NPR)WNYC when a report was given by an International Correspondent about the smuggling of Chinese citizens through the village of Douglas in Orange Walk District across the Rio Hondo River to Mexico and then the United States. In this province in China, Chinese gather to start their journey with different types of forged documents from various countries such as; birth certificates, drivers license, passports, college diplomas, transcripts, degrees etc. The only two difficult passports to forge are the British and the American because of the built in bar code. This smuggling is being organized and executed by a Chinese international organization with people working for them in all the countries where Chinese people reside. Families pay up to $80, US at the end of their destination when their relatives reach the United States. This report can be obtained from the archives of National Public Radio if anyone is interested in it. Since this incident was reported in the news last week, I have noticed that the People s United Party is trying to make a big thing out of it as if this is something new. When Belize attained independent on September the 21 st, 1981 Hong Kong and Belize were both colonies to Great Britain and the citizens of these countries carried British passports. During that time the People s United Party was still in power. It was a known fact that many citizens from Hong Kong did not want live under Chinese rule when Great Britain gave back Hong Kong to China. Many citizens were asking the British to give them the option of becoming citizens of the other Commonwealth countries including Belize. We do not know whether the Belize government at the time volunteered to grant citizenship to citizens from Hong Kong. In 1984 the United Democratic Party took over the Belize government for the first time in Belize s history and it was later disclosed to the Belizean public that our country had an Economic Citizenship program where they were selling Belizean Citizenships and passports in Hong Kong. When Belizeans heard about this program, they were shocked and outrage over it. Belizeans demanded that this program be ended. For a long time throughout that five year period, I did not hear much about this passport and citizenship program. In the political campaign of 1989, this issue resurfaced and in that campaign, both political parties committed themselves not to reinstate this unpopular program. The United Democratic Party lost the elections of 1989 and the People s United Party formed the new government of Belize. The United Democratic Party was returned to government in 1993 and lost again in Since that time the People s United Party was in power up until During that period, there was a passport scandal where several passports were missing from the Immigration Department. Some people were arrested but on one was ever convicted and so the corrupt activity continued. Both political parties have pledge to put and end to this issue but for some reason it is still coming back to haunt our people and government. With this new scandal, some Immigration officers were arrested but the Belizean people still believe that more Belizeans working for the government of Belize in high places are involved in this network. In order to get to the bottom of this scandal, the Government of Belize might have to create a Commission of Inquiry comprising of members of the government and the opposition parties to look into this matter thoroughly. The selling of Belizean citizenships and passports is something no government of Belize must condone. Citizenship comes with certain rights and privileges that will impact on the natural born citizens. Belize recently changed its passport to Caricom passport and it is costly to be changing passports all the time. The United States Government will be watching this case closely because they do not want people coming through Belize to their country with fake documents. This is not the time for any political party to try and gain political mileage over this issue but for all Belizeans to come together and commit themselves to stop selling our country s passport and citizenships for a few dollars because the long term consequences to our people and nation will be severe. When his wife woke up, she looked out the It was many years ago since the embarrassing day when a young woman, with a baby in her arms, entered George s butcher shop and confronted him with the news that the baby was his and asked what was he going to do about it? Finally George offered to provide her with free meat until the boy was 16. She agreed. George the butcher had been counting the years off his calendar, and one day the teenager, who had been collecting the meat each week, came into the shop and said, I ll be 16 tomorrow. Sixteen Years Later window and sure enough there was a box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway. Confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway and brought the box back in the house. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale. Bob has been missing since Friday. I know, said George with a smile, I ve been counting too, tell your mother, when you take this parcel of meat home, that it is the last free meat she ll get, and watch the expression on her face. When the boy arrived home he told his mother. The woman nodded and said, Son, go back to the butcher and tell him that apart from the free meat he has been providing, I have also had free bread, free milk, and free groceries for the last 16 years and watch the expression on his face! #31 Bullet Tree Road, San Ignacio Town, Cayo Tel: Offering the Best Prices in General Merchandise, Grocery and Hardware Items. Ralph Moody (R) STAR Editor, Nyani Azueta August (R) handing over a $200 cash award to PC #1196 Castillano Pop (L) Continued From Front Page Alberto August, Publisher Inspector Mai informed that from the several names submitted for consideration, of the STAR Newspaper, encouraged them to continue striving for excellence in the performance Police Constable #1196 of their duties and to treat Castillano Pop was selected for the special recognition. In his presentation Inspector Mai described PC Pop as an exemplary officer who never hesitates to go that extra mile in the execution of his duties. He is always punctual and takes pride in the uniform he wears. In his brief remarks, Supt. Moody encouraged the officers in attendance to continue striving for excellence and to continue treating the public with the highest level of professionalism as it is very important for the police to continue working in partnership with the community for a safer Belize. In recognition of his achievement, PC Pop received a $200 cash award sponsored by the STAR Newspaper along with a Certificate of Appreciation. A framed photograph of PC Pop will take its rightful place on the wall inside the police station for an entire year until replaced by the next officer of the month for September In a brief address to the gathering of police officers, the public, especially those visiting the station, with respect. He highlighted the professional manner in which the police is now answering the telephone and reiterated that those working at the front desk are often times the very first persons with whom the public comes in contact and since that first impression is said to be a lasting impression, they must endeavor to create that first good impression. He ended by congratulating PC Pop on the award and encouraged him to keep up the good work while serving as an example for his colleagues. PC Castillano Pop comes to San Ignacio Town from the southern village of Silver Creek in the Toledo District. He first enlisted into the Belize Police Department in 2009 as part of Recruit Squad #85. His first posting was in Dangriga Town. PC Pop resigned from the Department in January 2010 but re-enlisted four months later in April and has since been stationed in San Ignacio Town. Continued From Front Page performing duties at the bank. The robbers reportedly made off with over three hundred thousand dollars in cash. Since the incident in Honduras, Salazar remained under heavy police and army guard at a hospital in Honduras until he arrived unescorted in Belize at 9:30 am, on Wednesday, October 13 on board of Maya Island Air Regional flight direct out of San Pedro Sula, Honduras. He was met at the Phillip Goldson International Airport by police personnel from Eastern Division s Crimes Investigation Branch. He was placed inside a waiting police vehicle and whisked away to the Queen Street Police Station in Belize City where he was processed. It was well into the evening hours on Wednesday when the escort team left Belize City arriving at the San Ignacio police station with Salazar well after sunset. In a surprising twist of events, the Director of Public Prosecution has ordered that, in the absence of convincing evidence, no charge is to be levied against him in connection with the March 30, 2010 robbery/murder at Scotia Bank in Spanish Lookout. He was consequently released by San Ignacio police. Not free to take to the streets however, as during the evening hours on Thursday, October 14, he was transported to Punta Gorda Town where he is wanted in connection with the September 2009 murder, in Big Falls Village, of Belizean shopkeeper, Francis Johnston. Gabriel Gabby Salazar continues to maintain his innocence in any crime in Belize claiming upon the record in his passport indicating that he has been living continuously in Honduras since For all your lumber and lumber product needs
