1 MG Type A Newsletter of the Sacramento Valley MG Car Club The Prez Says Greetings from thirty thousand feet high above Greenland. Cathy and I have been on holiday in the Baltic, which explains our absence from September s club events. It s a trip Cathy has always wanted to go on. Traveling is nice but it s always nice to come home. We ve missed some great events that happened in September. To recap, September began with Beni s hosting of the Sacramento Yacht Club BBQ/Car show. I was able to access the newsletter and saw that this was a successful event. From those I spoke to, everyone had a good time. Thank you Beni for all your hard work, research and effort in coordinating this event. September also brought about GOF West hosted by Reno British Car Club. From the GOF West website, the event looks well attended and was not restricted to just MGs. As of this writing, I do not know if any of our club took home any awards, but remember that this event is Continued on Page 2 Sacramento Yacht Club BBQ and Car Show By Beni Feil with Photos by Mike Crisman This was the first time that our club joined in with the Yacht Club for a car show and I can say that it was a great hit for everyone involved. There was no disappointment in the number of cars that were available to view and it was a great day for a BBQ and something to drink. If you attended then you know that the BBQ was tasty and the bar was open for everyone s enjoyment. There was good participation from both the Yacht Club and SVMGCC. As in all car shows the owners were more than willing to talk about their Continued on Page 2

2 Prez Says Continued 2 Yacht Continued great for networking and assisting and receiving assistance in the care and maintenance of our cars. It is also a great venue for making new friends and forging new relationships. I hope you were able to go. Bob Best hosted our monthly Natter at the Cliff House in Folsom. Bob is meticulous in his planning and always tries to make sure everyone has a good time. Thank you Bob! The annual Ironstone Concours was held in Murphys and word has it that our very own Carl Gwyn took home an award for merit for his beautiful 68 MGB; well done Carl!! Lastly, John and Karla Rogers are leading a drive to Clovis for its annual Car/Antique show. Weather permitting, it promises to be a beautiful drive down HWY 49. I hope you were able to attend. In my travels I have tried to keep up with the weather and all it brings to our home area in the hopes we can finish the year with an upbeat attitude. Sadly, we said goodbye to Patty Reshke and Willy King this past month. May they both rest in peace. Honor them by getting out in your car and going for a nice relaxing drive somewhere. anywhere. cars and the work that they have done on it. I think that everyone had a great time and it was a wonderful venue for BBQ and cars! Keep on Driving!! Keith Dear MG members, Thank you so much for your cards, kind thoughts and prayers. Charlie and I enjoyed the club and all the very kind members over the years. I only wish it could have lasted longer. Since I have given the MG to Charlie s nephew, I no longer have one but would still like to remain a member. Please send the newsletter to my cutofthesun@gmail.com and remind me when dues are due. Someday I will take Beni up on her offer of riding with her. With heartfelt regards to everyone, Lynn Keever

The organization and planning was disappointing. Val said that seeing past friends was a good thing about the event. Frank Haener placed in the show with his TD. 4 Minutes Continued For the Good of the Club: Lawrie announced that he sold his TC. Jim Heilman said his light switch fell apart and said Corey came down and fixed him up and he wanted to say how much he appreciated Corey. This is what is so great about joining the club and working on the cars. Help is always forthcoming. Stump the Tech: On a MGB coil, does it point up, down or does it make a difference? Yes, Lawrie explained why it does make a difference. Jim Perell also added that the angle matters for contact. 50/50 Raffle gave $47 to Bonnie D Andrea who had the winning number. Next was a raffle of 2 tickets to the Niello Concours D Elegance donated by Jim Perell and the winner Frank and Margaret Haener. Also donated and created by Nancie Radakovitz was a cell phone bag won by Lindsay Costigan. Several magazines were also donated by Jim Perell. Bill Radakovitz moved and Lawrie Alexander seconded to adjourn the meeting. Adjournment was at 7:48. Respectfully submitted, Beckie Perell, Secretary 4 Funnies

5 GoF West 2018 Adventure By Dave Boyer 5 NATTER MATTERS Editors Note: This is a reprint form the October Arizona Morris Gazette Jim and Beckie Perell will host the Natter & Noggin this month. Details on the website. MG TYPE This article will be published in both the Octagon Wheel (AZ T Roadrunners) and in the Morris Gazette newsletters. The adventure to the GoF West 2018 began when Rich Flammang and Penni Putao, Danny and Barbara Young and Dave and Gretchen Boyer decided to caravan to Lake Tahoe for the event. It was a two-day journey north on California roads paralleling the Nevada border. Once the caravan left the desert and began to climb the mountains the scenery was breathtaking. Steep and curvy roads just made for our MGs except we were pulling trailers. We stayed overnight in Ridgecrest, CA and ended our journey safely on September 9 th. We were all busy signing up Continued on Page 6 MG TYPE is the official monthly Publication of the Sacramento Valley MG Car Club. Material from members and non-members is actively encouraged. The Editor reserves the right to edit for length and appropriateness. Placement of material is not guaranteed. Submittals are due to the Editor by the 25 th of each month. 6 6 for various events and side trips. The event was very worthwhile, especially meeting so many MG owners and driving our MGs at Lake Tahoe. Overall the venue of Lake Tahoe was super. The scenery along the lake was very beautiful and challenging as the curvy roads and change in elevation kept us on our toes. One couple traveled 2,400 miles from Raleigh, NC to Lake Tahoe in their MGTD. That is an achievement. 7 7 Editor s Note: The Arizona MG Club has started its first Club Book Report. This book was written by Peter J. H. Thornley and is a reprint from a book report article in the October Arizona MG Morris Gazette Mr. MG: A Biography of John William Yates Thornley O.B.E ( ) Report By H. Garcia I m kicking off a new future for the Morris Gazette, a Book Report on MG related books, and I would encourage other club members to also contribute in the future if so inclined. The book featured first (cover pictured above) is Mr. MG, which is a biography of the longtime employee/general Manager, and founding member of the MG Car Club, John Thornley and is currently available via Amazon for those members interested in picking up a copy. John s son, Peter, who now lives in the Southeastern United States, wrote the book. It begins a bit slow as Peter starts with a somewhat extensive family history but as the book progresses it paints a pretty complete picture of the man that would join the MG Car Company UK LTD in 1931, and go on to guide the Company through its most successful period, until his retirement in The absolute highlight of the book for me though lies in the Appendices. Contained in these three sections are letters and notes from John Thornley s career primarily as the GM of the MG Car Company, illustrating how much of an automotive and business visionary he truly was. There are many famous stories from the history of the MG Car Company, including the appeal to British Motor Corporation (MG s parent company at the time) to build their totally new styled sports car the MGA, which was rejected by management in favor of the Austin Healy 100. The book also covers John s involvement in MG s racing history, as well as his involvement in the founding of and long time stewardship of the MG Car Club, of which the Arizona MG Club is a member. There were many wonderful photos included from the family archive including from the factory in Abingdon. I found the book covered several topics that interest me, MG cars of course, business, auto racing, and history. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the history of the MG Car Company. Have you read any books about MG? Why not write up a brief recap and recommendation for other club members? Send your electronic copy to mailto:malibubarry@gmail.com.
