5 The Mills part of Harford Mills was a lumber mill where we used to shovel sawdust for use as bedding along with straw, baled after oats combining. They not only gave the piles of sawdust away free, but also the fletch wood cut off the outside of the logs and cut to fireplace length. At 14 years old I was driving two John Deere tractors, a ford pickup truck, a GMC stake body truck and the family Rambler station wagon. The Johnny poppers were my favorite, listening to them bark as you worked them. They talk to you as you load and unload them. Bud asked me to change the oil in the 50. When he came out from lunch I had it all done. It would not turn over with the starter. What did you do to my tractor? came the question. I drained the oil and filled it with clean oil as you told me to, I replied. How did you fill it? he asked. I placed the hose from the oil drum in the filler opening, as you showed me and filled it, I replied. Well as you might guess, we were lucky it did not fire with the crankcase full to the top with oil and no place for the pistons to go. Now my hobby is restoring old machinery. My first project was a basket case 1946 Aeronca Champion Airplane. This was the result of scale model, radio control, model airplane building that got out of control, as I moved to full scale model building. The Champ took three years to restore and I flew it for seven years. My wife Jane could not fly, so I sold the Champ and started an eight year restoration of a 1952 MGTD sports car. You may have seen her at last ears tractor pull. Jane & I share the fun with the MG and we have made many friends in the MG T-Party car club. Our MGTD has taken first in class at the British Invasion car show in Stowe, VT for the past two years, which has been quite gratifying. Upon completing the MG project, I had to find another project. Our son Jonathan and his wife Cara have a horse in Fitchburg, MA. They could use a tractor, to move manure around with. With my love for the sound of the two cylinder tractors I wanted to find a John Deere. I looked at models 40, 50 and the model B tractors on Tractorhouse.com. Jonathan s land is not all flat so I wanted a wide front end for a bucket loader. I found a 1949 model BW in Chittenango, NY and a model 45W loader in Hillsdale, NY. The tractor ran, but poorly. The biggest culprit turned out to be the magneto, with a broken impulse coupler spring. She now starts and runs well, without having rebuilt the engine, clutch or transmission. I did rebuild the magneto, generator and starter motor. The sheet metal work was not too bad, but I had to do some patch welding on the fuel tank and the hood, where it was cut for muffler replacement. So she is finally all repainted and pretty again. I can t wait to get it to a club pull so we can share it with you folks. Roy Any items you wish to submit for June/ July newsletter, see Megan. If anyone has any designs for a new club logo get them to Megan, they will be printed in upcoming newsletters for members input. Starting with the June/July newsletter, there will be a new column in the newsletter, Tractor Restoration Tales and Woes, stories needed, contact Megan Any suggestions as to things the club could do or participate in? Any other new business? Tabled Items-Donation to the FFA Please thank Cliff and Belle Tilton, Trudy Tilton, Blanche Levesque and the person who brought brownies for this evening s refreshments. There is no meeting in August. Roger and Cheryl LaPlante will be providing September s refreshments. Motion for adjournment, at 8:15 p.m., followed by 50/50 raffle. Nick and Brian acquired a Chase shingle mill in very good condition, paid for by Nick until another club member is ready to take ownership. Brian s boss contributed the use of a boom truck (crane) operated by Brian. The mill was rigged, pulled and delivered to Nick s shop before the rain really came down on Saturday. The mill will be fitted with new steel skids, bunks and removable wheels so it can be easily transported by trailer to show s and events, by Brian, Ken and Nick, starting 6/12. June 15. The mill was run in Nick s shop using a 1925 McCormick Deering sweatshirts and jackets to help us make a professional appearance. Items of clothing are available for purchase at club meeting s. New or amended rules will be communicated as they are made. Please help make sure ECATC is welcome by conducting yourself in a friendly and helpful way. We are guests of the fair. The fair has helped us a lot over the years and we would like to keep it going. Packing up and moving out can only start after the fair ends on Sunday night, often it is late before the fair gives the green light, for this reason please plan to pack up on Monday morning. Help is always needed for taking down tents, packing the Club trailer and cleaning up. Thank you for your help with this club endeavor and enjoy the fair! Tractor Restoration Tales and Woes This is the beginning of a new column in the newsletter, the editor is not restoring, nor has any plans to restore any tractors so I am relying on members for contributions to this column John Deere BW Restoration By Roy B. Crane When I was 14 years old I had the pleasure of working for my uncle, Bud Lusk, on his dairy farm in Harford Mills, NY. Being a kid, raised in the city of Rochester, NY, this was a real treat. The year before I worked for Bud, my cousin David Crane worked there for a summer. When I saw the size of his biceps after a summer of putting up bales of hay I couldn t wait to change my, sand-in-your-face, at the beach image. Some of you are old enough to remember those matchbook covers for Mighty Joe Young body building courses. Unfortunately I just got skinnier, wiry but skinny, at 6ft tall, 125lbs. Bud had 125 head of Holsteins that had to be milked, twice a day 7, days a week. This was my first introduction to what it meant to do a full day of work. At $20.00 per week, plus room and board I was kept in a plentiful supply of 22 cartridges, plus a bit of savings left over. My first job in the morning was to clean barn and spread manure with a John Deere model 40 tractor. Bud also used the 40 for cutting hay with a sickle bar cutter. As the summer went on, I got to rake hay with either the 40 or the model 50, depending on which was available at the time. Bud used the 50 for plowing and baling, while the smaller 40 took up the easier tasks, including pulling the hay wagon full of bales. I got to pull the three share plow behind the 50 just once.

7 EAST COAST ANTIQUE TRACTOR CLUB PARTICIPATION IN THE 2011 DEERFIELD FAIR The Deerfield fair presents a unique opportunity for the ECATC to get together, demonstrate tractors and equipment, sell items, sign up new members, and earn income for the club. Set up starts as early as the Saturday before the show (September 24). The fair runs Thursday through Sunday. Volunteers are needed to help set up and break down the club s displays and to staff them from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., during the fair. Monday is the day for picking up and moving out. Again this year, we are requesting that you sign in when dropping off tractors or equipment, using the exhibition info sheet. We will be compiling a list of all the exhibitors including exhibitor name, tractor brand, model and year, equipment brand, model, year and a brief description of what it is/was used for. You may bring your tractors and equipment for the duration of the fair. Fair rules allow equipment to be moved or brought in only before 7:30 a.m. during the fair. You should plan, therefore, to bring your equipment in by Wednesday or earlier, prior to the fair. The one exception for moving equipment during the fair is for tractors participating in the pulls. Please discuss any movement you plan with the ECATC fair chairman. Please let the ECATC fair committee know prior to set up what you plan to exhibit, and the days you can work. Sign s are available that you can fill out at the fair to describe your demonstration. Please use them. If you are working the show, please purchase a ticket and retain the stub for reimbursement at the October club meeting. There is room for campers on the grounds. Please review with the ECATC show chairman if you plan to stay at the fair. The club often cooks many of the meals eaten by members working the show. As it is not easy to plan, there may not always be enough food for late arrivals, or visitors. When possible, please wear items of ECATC clothing hats, tee shirts, on a 30 belt. After some adjustment, it ran well and produced quality pine shingles. Mock up wooden skids were tested to assure the new steel parts would not interfere with the safe operation. Design of the new skids, bunks, and axels was finalized June 19 th. Brian cut all of the parts to size the following week, Brian also aquired 4 wheels and axels. June 26. The mill was jacked up and placed on the new skids and bunks, axels and hitches were positioned. After a day of welding and fitting the wheels the new under pinning was painted. July 9. Brian, Ken and Nick pulled the mill from the shop on its new wheels, set it out side on the new skids and belted it up. The mill ran very well, producing quality shingles. The mill may be tested at the Power of the Red show on August th, in Dublin, NH. It seems likely it will be ready for the Deerfield Fair, this fall. Meanwhile, a new clutch has been ordered for Jason s mill, as back up in the event the Chase is more of a challenge than expected. The club will be asked to pay for the new clutch, as it will be required if Jason s mill is needed for Deerfield again this year. Jason has generously allowed us to use his mill for the past 3 years and has agreed to our use again this year. The cost of the clutch will be under $ Congratulations to Russell and Blanche Levesque, winners of the Weber table top grill. and utensil set. The club raised $ from this raffle. Tractor Pullers Important Notice: Our insurance policy requires that members who wish to pull in the non lawn and garden tractor pulls must be 18 years of age or older. The spring pull was well attended despite the dismal weather. Forty three people attended, with 14 tractors entered in the pull. The mist held off long enough to pull for a couple of hours before and after lunch. As always there was lots of good home cooked food and laughs. Thank you to everyone who participated. Marini s Farm Strawberry Festival, located in Ipswich, MA was held on Saturday, June 18 th. The morning started out dull and overcast, but by noontime it was bright and sunny. The festival was well attended with many people enjoying the clubs tractor display. Nine members brought 11 tractors. A big Thank you! to all those who participated.
