4 Page 4 National Road News From Belmont County Belmont County Rubberneck Tour The annual Belmont County Rubberneck Tour was Sunday, Oct. 9 with stops along the Historic National Road. This self-guided tour, sponsored by the Tourism Council of Belmont County, offers motorists the opportunity to travel the Rubberneck route, stopping at pre-determined spots. Thanks to Justin Gallagher of Randall Gallagher Memorials of St. Clairsville, for installing the bronze plaque on the historic Blaine Bridge (Ohio s Bi-Centennial Bridge), commemorating its inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Stops included: the Benjamin Lundy House in downtown St. Clairsville, hosted by Dr. John S. Mattox the Underground Railroad Museum the Belmont County Courthouse the Belmont County Sheriff s Museum the historic pike town of Morristown, where the Morristown Preservation Society offered numerous activities. ONRA, the Tourism Council and others provided displays at Valley View Campgrounds. Mile Marker #134, which was located in Lansing for years, has been found! Missing for many years, the marker was extensively damaged in an auto crash. It was retrieved by Rick Kolb of Brookside, who has stored the marker in his garage. Rick is in the process of restoring the marker. Many years ago, Rick also restored Mile Marker #132 in his hometown of Brookside, which ironically, was also damaged by an auto crash. Thank you, Rick! One of ONRA s Belmont County representatives, Dr. John S. Mattox, has been selected to the 2016 class of the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame! The induction ceremonies will be in Columbus Nov. 2 & 3. John served in the US Air Force from ONRA, Belmont, extends its appreciation to ODOT District 11 and employee Stacy Agnew, for installing 7 Historic National Road road signs close to mile markers in Belmont County, in anticipation of the Rubberneck Tour. These signs will hopefully draw attention to the mile markers along the road during the Rubberneck Tour. The Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame was established in 1992 and honors veterans who after serving their country with dignity, continue serving in their communities, each making significant a impact. Each class is selected by the executive committee composed of leaders of different veterans organizations, who can select up to 20 individuals each year. To date, more that 400 veterans are members of the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame.

5 Page 5 Article from the Columbus Dispatch on November 11, The 1936 National Cornhusking Contest This November 10th will mark the 80th anniversary of the National Cornhusking Contest that took place on the National Road in Luray, OH. In 1936, TIME magazine declared corn husking "...the fastest growing sporting spectacle in the world." Celebrating agrarian values in a festival atmosphere, annual national corn husking contests each attracted over 100,000 spectators during the 1930s and early 1940s. Contests were broadcast live to radio audiences across the country and the winners became national heroes. When the United States entered World War II in 1941, these huge events were abruptly halted. On Tuesday, November 10, 1936, many eyes from around the country were on the Alva Oyler farm in Luray, Ohio (today located near the intersection of U.S. 40 and St. Rt. 37), as the National and State Husking Contests were held there. Farmers from throughout Licking County and Ohio became heavily involved and looked upon it as one of the great agricultural events of their time. A newspaper account of the day said, The contest was held under extremely adverse circumstances, as the fields were seas of mud and water. The policing was exceptionally good, although pickpockets were in evidence. Several lost their rolls. The newspaper also reported that approximately 160,000 people attended the event. It also mentioned that State patrolmen on horseback parked over 45,000 cars the day of the event. The contest was won by Carl Carlson, a 38-year-old bachelor farmer of Audubon, Iowa, who picked bushels of corn in the 80 minute contest. Second place went to 27-year-old Adam Byczyuski of Le Moille, Illinois with 20.9 bushels, third to Laurence House of Kansas at bushels, and fourth to Ted Balko of Minnesota, the 1934 winner, with bushels. Carlson s brother, Elmer, established a world record at the 1935 contest of bushels under more favorable conditions. He was present for this contest, but did not enter.

This is another intact segment of the original 1917 brick pavement, located just east of the National Road and Zane Grey Museum and west of Norwich, on the south side of U.S. 40, which crossed the nearby B&O Railroad track at grade, just to the east of this location in Muskingum County, prior to the building of a new bridge that bypassed this segment, carrying U.S. 40 over the tracks and eliminating the grade crossing. It now serves as access to and dead ends at the adjoining private property.
