Whitehorse Trail, running from Darrington to Arlington is undergoing extensive work so that it can be reopened and enjoyed by visitors looking for ways to experience the magic of this scenic area of Snohomish County. The trail is a county-owned corridor along a former Burlington Northern Railroad. Most recently a portion of the trail was destroyed by the Oso landslide and restoring it is one of the efforts currently underway to boost tourism and outdoor recreation as important economic drivers in the area. So far crews have cleared about 15 miles of the route starting at Darrington. Next they will focus on clearing the west end of the trail near Arlington, but the trail the portion wiped out by the mudslide will have to wait until next summer. With what remains of 2014, crews will also repair the 14 bridges on the trail (thanks to an amazing $301,000 private donation.) Once complete, the 27-mile Whitehorse Trail will connect Darrington and Arlington. For the future, it is hoped that the trail will connect to the Centennial Trail and eventually to trails in King County as well. 3 News & Notes Do You Really Want to Own an RV? By Ginger Dollarhide, the frugal fossil We ve had them all, or almost all, of the equipment meant for camping, or should I say recreating. We began with a tent and then graduated to a tent-trailer. Over the years we ve also owned a Volkswagon camper van, a 19 ft. trailer, a 25 ft. 5th wheeler, several short class B camper vans, including a 23 ft. B plus camper van, and travelled to Disneyland in a 33 ft. bus (borrowed). We have camped coast-to-coast across the U.S. and Canada three times, once with all four kids in tow. I say all this to establish credibility because I have read a great many articles by folks who really haven t been there. Camping has some obvious advantages. It s nice to have all your stuff with you, the kids can run around the campground with less supervision than in a city, and you can enjoy some places in the wild that aren t near a hotel or even a cabin. However, owning a camping vehicle is sometimes not much fun and is not something that a truly frugal fossil should want to do. For example, think about it. These folks in those luxurious RV s paid from $40,000 to $400,000 for the privilege of being mobile. That would pay for 400 days to 4000 days in a $100 a day hotel. Or they could go on at least five ocean cruises and stay in the penthouse suite. For some reason, we Americans like to OWN things, however impractical. Then there s added expenses and the not much fun part of RV ownership. For example, the RV owners have to pay for the license, insurance, maintenance, camping spot, and the cost of fuel. On a recent trip to California even some State camping spots on the beach were $250 a night. The cost of our gas was $2,000. It would have been less than half that for gas in our frugal Hundai, if we had chosen to go by car. Maintenance of an RV can be astronomical if something goes wrong and it usually does. That s the not much fun part. Breakdowns of some piece of equipment are common in RV s from awnings that rip to generators that won t start. I can remember sitting on the side of the road in Manitoba with a broken axle on our tent trailer wondering what to do next. Still, it s that kind of RV adventure our kids seem to remember with fondness more than sitting in a resort swimming pool. So, do you really want to own an RV? I think it s a little bit like owning a boat it doesn t make economical sense and still we do it because open travel on sea or land is part of our American dream. We never dreamed we d become frugal fossils. News Paine Field named a new director in September. Arif Ghouse has worked in airports from London to Dallas to Seattle. A few changes have taken place on some Community Transit routes in South Snohomish County. Please check the route guide or their website before advising visitors: Design the winning new City of Everett logo and be awarded $5,000! Submit your design by October 17. For all the details, visit WorldWind Helicopters is a new addition to the Arlington airport. Some of the fun services they provide includes helicopter charters, air tours, aerial photography and filming opportunities. Their more serious work includes fire suppression, construction services and more. Contact: or info@wwheli.com. Is that So Answers: Answers: 1. A mouse 2.
