Our diverse history spans from the Native Americans to the Revolutionary War, agriculture and the cranberry and blueberry industries, women s rights, transportation, industry and innovation. This summer we invite you to share in and explore our history right here in Burlington County! The Passport features over 35 sites, all unique, but equally important. When visiting be sure to get your passport stamped! Complete your passport by October 1 and return to the Visitor Center at Smithville Park to redeem a prize. 3 VINCENTOWN ONE-ROOM SCHOOLHOUSE A private school, known as a helping school, attended by students who needed more help than the public school could offer. The most well -known schoolmaster was Billy K. Haines, a Civil War veteran. The schoolhouse originally stood on the Allen Oil Company property on North Main Street. The Allen s donated and moved the building to its present location. The school was reconditioned and furnished by Southampton Historical Society members and dedicated to the Southampton school children in Address: Race Street & Saw Mill Park, Vincentown Phone: Hours of Operation: 9:00AM-12:00PM, 1st Saturday of each month (April-October) WHITE HORSE INN Home to the Woodland Township Historical Society, the museum offers exhibits which include local artifacts from Cranberry and blueberry agriculture, the Central New Jersey Railroad specific to the Blue Comet derailment, local talent, education, and distinguished families of the past. Take a walking tour to learn the history of Chatsworth while visiting the Capital of the Pines. We promote our mission through a mobile museum unit showcased at county-wide events May-November, including the Joint Base Air Show and Burlington County Farm Fair. Phone: Web: FRIENDSHIP SCHOOLHOUSE This one-room schoolhouse was rescued by the Tabernacle Historical Society in 1985 from the Sandy Ridge area of a town called Friendship. The present day school was brought to Tabernacle to replace the original school. It was placed in honor of the children who lived at the blueberry camp in Friendship and later lived in the Tabernacle-Chatsworth area. 4 ATSION VILLAGE The Atsion Mansion was built in 1826 as a summer home for Samuel Richards. After Richards died in 1842, the property was passed down through his heirs, and finally sold to Maurice Raleigh. The Raleigh family was the last to use the mansion as a residence. When Joseph Wharton purchased the property in 1892, he used the mansion for packing and storage for his cranberry production. Today the mansion appears as it did back in Address: 744 Route 206, Shamong Phone: Web: Hours of Operation: 9:00AM-4:00PM daily (April-September) JOHN INSKEEP HOMESTEAD Maintained by the Evesham Historical Society, the John Inskeep House is an example of an 18th century Evesham farm house, altered and enlarged in the 19th century, probably in two phases. It is fully furnished and includes collections of Native American artifacts, 18th century cooking and farming implements, and 19th century clothing. Also on the site are a four-seater privy and the old Marlton butcher shop which have recently been restored. The John Inskeep House is on the National Register of Historic Places. Currently, it reflects the agricultural and commercial enterprises that existed at the site in the late 19th century. Address: 4110 Nesco Road, Hammonton Phone: Web: Hours of Operation: 9:00AM-4:00PM daily VINCENTOWN-TABERNACLE TELEPHONE MUSEUM The Vincentown-Tabernacle Telephone Company operated from The second floor of the museum depicts how it used to look. New Jersey Bell purchased the company in 1930 and continued here until The downstairs museum traces the progression of communication, highlighting Alexander Graham Bell and the development of the telephone. 5 ALICE PAUL BIRTHPLACE Paulsdale is the childhood home of suffragist and equal rights activist Alice Stokes Paul. Now a National Historic Landmark and home to the Alice Paul Institute, it is a site on the New Jersey Women s Heritage Trail. The Alice Paul Institute educates the public about the life and work of Alice Paul, and offers heritage and girls leadership development programs. Alice Paul led the final fight to get women the vote in 1920 and wrote the Equal Rights Amendment. We honor her legacy as a role model of leadership in the continuing quest for equality. Whitesbog Village includes 25 restored buildings, actively-farmed cranberry bogs, blueberry fields, walking trails, driving and horseback-riding trails, reservoirs, water tower, general store, The Cranberry and Blueberry Museum, Antique Engine Museum, Suningive house, and Elizabeth White s Gardens. Part of Brendan T. Byrne State Forest and the Pine Barrens, this 1900 s era living history farm village is listed on the State and National Historic Register. 6 CROSS KEYS ONE-ROOM SCHOOLHOUSE The schoolhouse is the last remaining one-room Schoolhouse open to the public in Medford. The building is furnished as it would have appeared in It is open for a variety of activities. During these events, you will find docents and schoolmarms, dressed in period garb, anxiously sharing what education was like in a bygone era and allowing children a hands-on experience. 8 RED DRAGON CANOE CLUB SHIPMAN MANSION The Shipman Mansion is a Second Empire style home built c on the banks of the Delaware River by Paul and Alice Shipman. It is listed on the New Jersey and Federal Registry of Historic Places. Many of its original architectural details are preserved including the fireplaces, three-story stairwell, and ceiling medallions. The mansion also houses a Collection of antique canoes and artifacts from the early history of the Red Dragon Canoe Club founded in 1887.\ Address: 221 Edgewater Avenue, Edgewater Park Phone: Web: Hours of Operation: 11:00AM-3:00PM, 1st Saturday & Sunday of each month ROEBLING The Roebling Museum is located in the restored former gateway building on the site of the John A. Roebling s Sons Company s Steel Mill. It is where the steel and cables for some of the world s most famous bridges was made. The site preserves and shares, not only the history and legacy of the Roebling family and company, but, also, the history and heritage of the workers, their village, their connection to the Delaware River and the historic Camden and Amboy Railroad. The Museum also works to inspire future generations to build, make, and do by focusing on the STEAM/STEM achievements of the company. The museum Interprets these areas through galleries, exhibits, archives and collections, and tours. 9 CROSSWICKS MEETINGHOUSE The museum is housed in a c brick building. Originally, it was constructed as an Orthodox Friends Meeting House. The building now serves as the Chesterfield Township Historical Society Museum with a diverse collection of redware pottery, Brick s mincemeat memorabilia, and many township related holdings. The historic site is located in the midst of the Crosswicks Village National Register Historic District. Check website for program schedule. A research area is available to the public. The original wing of the house was built in 1723 by Robert Field. The house sits on the banks of the Delaware River Surrounded on three sides by Bordentown. From 1723 until 1922 many Families called White Hill home, including doctors, inventors, and politicians. 10 25 Crosswicks (Orthodox) Meetinghouse 26 White Hill Mansion 27 Roebling BURLINGTON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY The campus of the Burlington County Historical Society is made up of the birthplaces of James Fenimore Cooper and Captain James Lawrence, and the Corson Poley Center (Delia Biddle Pugh Research Library and museum galleries). Residents and visitors curious about Burlington County s past are invited to come and explore. History isn t boring here! 11 13 Visitors Center 14 Worker s House Gallery 15 Underground Railroad Museum 16 Smithville Mansion WEST HILL MANOR Completed in 1799, West Hill Manor was the home of Samuel and Susanna Emlen. It is an example of Federal style architecture with most of the original features intact. Susanna was one of the earliest breast cancer survivors in the United States, having surgery in the home in In 1851, the home was purchased by Eliza P. Gurney, a Quaker minister and social reformer. She was a correspondent with President Lincoln during the Civil War. Peachfield is the headquarters of the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of New Jersey. 12 SMITHVILLE VISITOR CENTER Stop in the Visitor Center, one of the oldest buildings on the property, and learn about Smithville Village, including worker s homes, factory complex, mechanic s hall, and conservatory. The worker s house is also home to year-round rotating art exhibits. 13 ONE-ROOM SCHOOLHOUSE Built in 1759, it is the oldest one-room schoolhouse on its original foundation. Visit the schoolhouse for a taste of education in colonial times. Write with a quill, do math on a slate, and read from a hornbook. The schoolhouse is owned by The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of New Jersey. It was uncovered in 1967 when the surrounding house was demolished. 14 17 Burlington County Prison Museum 18 Warden s House Gallery 19 One-Room Schoolhouse 20 Shinn-Curtis Log House HISTORIC BURLINGTON COUNTY PRISON MUSEUM The Burlington County Prison Museum is a National Historic Landmark located in historic Mount Holly. Designed by Robert Mills, one of America s first native-born and trained architects. The Burlington County Prison was completed in One of Robert Mills first designs as an independent architect, the interior vaulted ceilings of poured concrete and brick and stone construction made the building virtually fireproof.
