5 Staff Report Follow-Up Items: (New updates are in bold italics) Park Historic Signs Narratives are complete; a meeting was held on Wednesday, September 9th with the designer/manufacturer to begin sign production. Board approved proof for first park historic sign; staff will now be asking the designer to complete proofs for remaining parks. Once Board has approved, then construct the signs for staff to install. Narrows Park sign is being constructed; information and design on McCormick and Cushman are completed for Board review; Rotary Bark Park is in progress; the next historic sign staff is working on is for the Fox Island Fishing Pier. The Fox Island Fishing Pier sign is complete and staff is working on sign for Sunrise Beach Park; once the graphics are completed, the frames and stands will be manufactured and installed. Staff is working on the DeMolay Sandspit Nature Preserve sign. Recreation & Soccer Center The Winter Recreation Guide will hit homes on November 4 th. The guide has lots of new youth programs: Healthy Kids in the Kitchen, Holiday Baking, Artful Creative, Chinese Language, Music & Movement, Youth Baseball Leagues & Little Sluggers with PAA, and two new coding classes with Harbor Code Academy Just Steamed 1, Robots & Gadgets. New adult classes include: Artful Creative and Gentle Yoga. Staff is busy with the details for the Breakfast with Santa event to be held on December 3 rd. Staff is working on 2017 sponsorship packets for special events and youth sports leagues. Once updated, sponsor packets will be delivered and meetings set up to discuss opportunities for local businesses. Sehmel Homestead Park Staff is working with RCO and a grant application to replace infields with turf and add a warning track to 2 and 3. Looking for Board direction on the Central Maintenance Facility. Staff is obtaining estimates for installation of pathway lighting at amphitheater; also obtaining cost estimates for meadow power, toilet shelters and picnic shelter for meadow. Staff has received the first bid on the toilet enclosure and will be seeking two more bids before moving forward. Staff is working with Bob Droll s firm on exercise equipment to be installed at Sehmel Homestead Park and possibly other sites; staff has - 5 of 26 - Agenda

6 scheduled a meeting regarding exercise equipment with Board committee members for October 27 th at 4 p.m. Staff is currently seeking cost estimates for a full service restroom facility to serve playground and soccer field. Staff has asked for a project description for a maintenance barn not to exceed $350k. A lot of interest in pickle ball at Sehmel Homestead Park; staff is trying to work with their needs. It appears a toilet facility at SHP located near the soccer field will cost about $250k; it would be similar to the restrooms on Cushman Trail or at the Maritime Pier with a family component and storage included. Staff is finalizing a contract on the infield replacement and will present to the Board at a future meeting. Jeanne Gagliano scheduled a pre-development conference with Pierce County to discuss feasibility of the maintenance barn Option A. The Maintenance Department reviewed the design for any needed changes and a pre-development meeting was held on 11/3/15 with Pierce County. Staff is currently working with the drainfield designer, TPCHD, and Washington Water to complete the drainfield design and will be going out for an RFQ for the design and development of the facility. Staff has received RFQs for the design and development of both the restroom and the maintenance facility. Staff reviewed RFQs at the 4/25/16 Board meeting. Staff is working with SFA on contracts for design and development of maintenance facility and restrooms and will present to the Board for approval at a future meeting. Staff is working with a contractor to begin the site improvements for placement of the exercise equipment. Site preparation for the placement of the exercise equipment will begin later this week; an area 22 x42 by the concession stand will be excavated and prepared for the installation of 8 pieces of exercise equipment. The other site beside the picnic shelter will also be prepared for equipment. Working with SFA on final details for maintenance facility and new restrooms prior to submittal to Pierce County for construction permits and to the park board for construction cost estimates. Great Peninsula Conservancy (GPC), who oversees the Conservation Easement, is reviewing the maintenance facility location for compliance with the Conservation Easement and Management Plan. Once approved by GPC, the plans will be submitted to Pierce County for permits. Most of the exercise equipment has been installed with the balance of the equipment being installed shortly. The Maintenance Facility issues have all been resolved and the design is being sent to Pierce County for permits and then out to bid. Working to complete restroom design to submit to Pierce County for permitting and then out to bid. First annual pickle ball tournament was very successful with 170 participants and many observers. 7 replacement is planned to begin October 24 th. Bidding for the maintenance facility will begin in a few weeks. Volunteer Information Park Maintenance Volunteers: Staff continues to work with Master Gardeners at Sehmel Homestead Park to facilitate the maintenance of the Heritage and Demonstration Gardens. An Eagle Scout built a trail at Hales Pass. An Eagle Scout completed the fence around the large maple tree in the Sehmel Homestead Park Meadow. An Eagle Scout is building fishing line recycle stations for five waterfront parks. Several other Eagle Scout candidates have approached the District for potential projects under discussion. No new updates. Recreation Interns & Volunteers Staff is working on community outreach to explore new partnership opportunities with local service providers sponsorships and community involvement in events. Staff is actively recruiting interns that are completing their degree in Parks & Recreation, Education, Marketing and Environmental Science. No new updates.
