1 VOLUME 21, NO. 2, 3 & 4 FEB/MAR/APR 2015 PUGET SOUND EARLY BIRDS CHAPTER 81 CLASSIC THUNDERBIRD CLUB INTERNATIONAL DEDICATED TO THE PRESERVATION, ADMIRATION, AND OWNERSHIP OF THE "CLASSIC THUNDERBIRD" I f there is anything our club members do with gusto, it s enjoy a meal. The January planning meeting was no exception to that rule. It s always a treat to make your own pizza at Niemi s Pizza Palace featuring Duane s wood fired pizza oven. Nancy gets the dough ready, lays out all the fixings anyone could possibly want and club members, once they have flattened and shaped the dough for their own custom made pizza, G O O D T I M E S, G O O D F R I E N D S, G R E A T C A R S!

2 Hope your Feb/Mar/Apr is going well. We had a good turn out for the Jan. 17th planning meeting. Thank you Niemi's for all the good pizza and food and the use of your house. We have some great events coming up for this year. The Hood Canal tour for April will get us going for the summer. The over night to the Kite Festival will be great. I have been there a couple of times and it is a lot of fun on the beach and very colorful. Some of the other events to be detailed yet. See you on THE ROAD AHEAD. The following events were suggested, pending confirmation and feedback to your president. You will note that there are several events that we re looking at in July and August. February: No Meeting, No Newsletter March: No Meeting, No Newsletter April: Hood Canal Rhododendron Tour Cheryl McCurdy suggested this and will confirm with McCurdy s on hosting May: Wind Farm Tour (Overnight) Callards June: Poker Run Dave Demory (who was not present) offered to host another poker run this year possibly ending with a Barbeque, model trains and art collection at Daugherty s home pending confirmation. 3 (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1) picked and chose their toppings. Voila! A pizza made to please everyone s own taste. Some pizza artists are very creative, others maybe not so creative but there isn t much left over when the last pizza comes out of the oven with it s crisp dough cooked to perfection. Duane cooks just two pies at a time so the baking process goes on for well over an hour with 20 people creating their own lunchtime treat. Pizzas eaten, everyone grabbed some dessert and it was time to get down to the business of planning the outings for the coming year. Jerry Weiler presided over this, his first meeting as PSEB President. We weren t sure what was in store for us as he opened the meeting with a gavel in hand! The first order of business was the presentation of a custom made plaque to Duane Niemi to thank him for his three years as president of our club. Once the plaque was turned over to Duane, the gavel wielding Jerry attached it to the plaque where it belonged. We are all grateful for the energetic and willing approach with which Duane, aided and abetted by Nancy, served the club in 2010 and for these past two years. A sincere round of applause signified our appreciation of a good job well done. We thank you, Duane and Nancy. It was time to get down to the order of business. Jerry led us through the process with the treasurer s report (See Page 6) and a reminder that dues are due. Darlene read the minutes from our November meeting (no business was conducted for the December meeting) and the process of filling the 2015 calendar was underway. It didn t start off with exciting proposals for great February and March events as we were reminded we had agreed not to have events in those two wintry months. Although Cheryl and Phil McCurdy advised at the last minute they couldn t attend the meeting, Cheryl suggested that the club s April event would will begin with the them leading us on a Rhododendron tour (around Hood Canal) with (CONTINUED ON PAGE 4) P A G E 3

4 some familiar stops followed with another road trip in May as we head out to the Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility east of Ellensburg for a tour and close-up look at the wind farm. Both outings give us a chance to drive those Thunderbirds! The proposed schedule of the year s activities is listed in the President s Message. As you will note there are a number of possible events listed for July and August. Jerry is looking for some input before the final schedule is put together. Dick Daugherty would like to host an event at his home and show off some of his art and train collection maybe combine with a Poker Run. Pizza enjoyed, dessert consumed and the day s business having wound down, the group began to head for home. A number of folks asked for Carol s Swedish Cream recipe and Judy Roupe s Refried Bean Dip. They are attached. Enjoy. Only Duane and Nancy know just what it takes to prepare for a pizza party and they do it with joy and enthusiasm. Thank you so very much for hosting this tasty, informative and fun gathering. P A G E 4

6 Report on file with president The January meeting of Puget Sound Early Birds was called to order by new president, Jerry Weiler at 2:10 PM. The first order of business was to recognize Duane Niemi for his 3 years of service as president, 2010, 2013 and A plaque noting that was presented. Treasurer s Report: Dues are due but no checkbook balance was available. Secretary Report: The November meeting notes were read and approved. A letter to club members from Jay and Sharon Howard was read (see page 7). Gordon Thorne introduced the idea of adding stickers to name tags to connote 5, 10, 20 (etc.) years of membership. Susan Harris suggested using the year joined rather than the number of years as a member. Jerry Weiler will appoint someone to check into it. Carol Weiler made a motion that hosts of in-home meetings/parties be reimbursed for up to $ Pre-approval for reimbursement would be required along with receipts documenting expenses. The events cited were the January planning meeting, Great Chefs and the Christmas party. The motion was carried. Jerry Weiler reminded the group that there will be no meeting in February or March and Bob Callard noted there will be no newsletters in those months, nor will there be an April newsletter. Thanks and appreciation were given to Bob and Martha Callard for the work they do on the Motor Mouth and also to Duane and Nancy Niemi for the work they do for the club. The meeting was adjourned at 3:30. In attendance: Weilers 2, Callards 2, Niemis 2, Austins 2, Vingos 2, Thornes 2, Hills 2, Harris 2, Rohweins 2, Roupes 1, Daugherty 1. P A G E 6
