1 VOL. 39 No. 12 December 2018 ' A Mid-State member for the past five years, Gary Franklin has been "into" old cars for quite a while... His current car is quite interesting, in that... it seems to be one of a mere 11,000 Ford Opera Coupes produced for AND... it has been hot-rodded with some very cool 'go-fast' stuff for a flattie of that era...!!! Gary also had some pretty unique 'first cars" before this 1941 Ford... So, here s his car story... I have composed a quick write up about my 1941 Ford as well as Early Cars I owned. First car at age 16 was a 1948 Hillman Minx convertible. It took me 6 months to earn enough money to buy auto insurance, so I rode my bicycle more than drove the car. In 1957 I bought a more reliable car. A 1947 Ford convertible, leaded-in, lowered and with spotlights. Typical 1950's look. Next car was a choice between a bug eye Austin Healy Sprite or a Berkley. I chose a new 1959 Berkley sports car with a body styled after the Ferrari and AC sports/race cars of that period Ford Super Deluxe Coupe w/ Jump Seats (Opera Coupe) Manufactured January Model: 11A, Body type: 67B Serial Number: 18-6,617, hp Flat Head V-8 "24 Stud" Engine Notes of interest: Opera Coupe: two rear fold down "jump" seats. There were about 10, Opera Coupe vehicles produced. Sold for ~$905 new. Modifications: Offenhauser Intake manifold w/ dual #94 carburetors. Edelbrook heads. Fenton headers. Dual Smithy's mufflers. Electrics- Converted 6 V Pos. Gnd. to 12V Neg.Gnd. Electric fuel pump. Bored & Stroked = 286 cubic inch. (From original: Bore , Stroke = 221 ci) This 1959 Berkley had a fiberglass body, three cylinder 492cc, (30 ci), 30 hp Excelsior 2 stroke engine, front wheel chain drive. Only 650 pounds dry weight. Now, up to present. About 4 years ago I decided to check some things off my bucket list and with my wife Sandy Paula's blessings buy an antique car. I found a 1941 Ford Super Deluxe Opera Coupe at auction and bought it. It was an older restoration but had a clean look. Original flathead V8 engine with some modifications. After some use I lost a crank bearing and had the engine rebuilt. <<< All of the specs for this car are in the Middle Insert. Regards. Gary Franklin Ed Note - Thanks for sharing Gary... A pretty cool car that 41 Ford is... and the memories of your little red 59 Berkley are also great. Who said, "If only we had kept our old cars"...??? IF ONLY...!!! Happy Holidays to All!!!!

Wright's Chicken Farm Car Club Sunday Dinner - Nov. 4, John Richinick Mid-State clubber, Treasurer (and member of the Old Car Club) reports on his recent adventure - Sunday November 4 th was the day all of the Car Clubs came together at Wright's Chicken Farm in Harrisville, RI for a feast of chicken, fries, pasta, salad, rolls, soda, coffee, and ice cream. The large Carriage Room was jammed back with young and old men and women for this yearly event. It takes place every year on the first Sunday of November. The clubs that attended were Model A, T-Bird, Corvair, Model T and many non specialized clubs. We attended with the Old Car Club with 26 people and 8 cars in caravan. One other car met us there from Wales, MA. As mentioned above, these cars were present as well as some muscle cars, trucks, 40's,50's, 60's, and 70's cars. It turned out to be a beautiful day. (Ed note Maybe we can put this back on the Mid State schedule for ???) Page 5 God Bless America
6 I was watching the news last night and, believe it or not, they re talking snow this weekend. I m not ready for fall yet, never mind winter, so this is not at all welcome news in my house. I m sure that the ski areas are happy though. It just doesn t seem possible that, once again, we re heading into the holiday season but here we are. The positive thing, I suppose, as far as our shared interests is concerned, is that we can now do all those things to our cars that weren t possible when we were driving them all the time, right? Seriously though, there s a positive side to just about everything and, for us, it s that we ve got the Mid-State Christmas Party to look forward to. For what I believe to be the 6 th year in a row we re holding this event at McNally s in Westminster. This has always been a great time, so my bet is that it will be again and, though the price to the club has increased once again, the cost per club member ticket is still only $12. As with any venue such as this there s a deadline that we need to adhere to and this year it s Friday, Nov 23 rd, better known as Black Friday. There s a form to order your tickets for the dinner as well as to pay your dues for the upcoming year included in the last newsletter so please get this in ASAP. Please remember that we also collect toys for less fortunate children at the Christmas Party so please bring a new, unwrapped toy, to the party so that we can collect them for the kids. We ll see you all on December 3 rd. Dave Cramm, President MSAAC In a FUTURE 2019 Issue We will wrap up Mid State s 2018 Events and Sponsors ANYONE who feels the urge to help out with their impressions of this past year is welcome!!!
