1 SOLANA BEACH CIVIC AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY President s Message Happy Fall SBC&HS has had a busy October I want to thank all of you who participated in our busy day Saturday Oct. 6 th. Our Garden Club the SeaWeeder s teamed with the City of Solana Beach on our Roundup Roundup, where we were able to dispose of over 800 pounds of hazardous pesticides. Later that afternoon we had our Follow the Water Lake Hodges Centennial It was a great success with Kevin Anderson s fabulous Follow the Water masterpieces which will be on exhibit at City Hall until 11/14. Peter Sprague jazz musician provided the musical entertainment. I was so happy to be able to honor the Fletcher Family and meet so many Fletcher s. Without Colonel Ed Fletcher s vision and effort to get us running water there would be no Solana Beach. It s hard to believe there was virtually nothing here 100 years ago. The Follow the Water celebration will continue with the Del Mar Historical Society's upcoming event on November 7th from 7-9 pm. The subject of the 100th Anniversary of Lake Hodges. The speakers are Andy Stratham, Phd, California State University San Marcos (co-editor of The Journal of San Diego History) and Trish Boaz, Executive Director, San Diego River Valley Conservancy. The venue has been changed from L Auberge to the new Del Mar Town Hall, 1040 Camino del Mar. There is plenty of free parking accessed from 11th Street and there is an elevator from the parking area to the main plaza. No need to RSVP. Hope to see you there. I would also like to thank all of you who made our History come alive for third graders in Solana Beach through our Living History Program. These kids have so much fun on a field trip to our museum where they learn all about what life was like prerunning water and electricity and postrunning water and electricity. Super fun program Thanks to those of you who were character actors making history come to life I would like to encourage you all to volunteer with the Solana Beach Civic and Historical Society Our Society really cannot continue if we do not have dedicated volunteers and board members. We need you now Please me at mstribling1@yahoo.com It was great to see so many Civic Minded Citizens at our October 12 Meeting featuring the League of Women Voters. They helped us understand the propositions on the ballot. Don't forget to vote by November 6th Last, but most importantly our Annual Holiday Boutique is coming up on November 10 th from 9am-2pm. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year Please support our fabulous craft group. These ( See next page) PAGE 1

7 Footsteps in the Garden Folk wisdom says that the best fertilizers are the footsteps of the gardener in the garden. It s true: by getting close to your plants you can take note of their well-being. Some plants that appear to be in good shape from a distance, might, on closer inspection, be showing early signs of problem insects or mildew. A timely non-toxic treatment can prevent a small problem from becoming a big problem. A stitch in time saves nine." To learn more about non-toxic gardening and plant and pest identification, bring a photo or plastic bagged specimen to the SeaWeeder s November 13th meeting. 6:30 pm at the Fletcher Cover Community Center, 133 Pacific Avenue in Solana Beach. Send your gardening questions to SBSeaWeeders@gmail.com. The SeaWeeders Garden Club welcomes visitors to monthly meetings (September through June) on the second Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at the Fletcher Cove Community Center, 133 Pacific Avenue. Upcoming SeaWeeders Events There is a lot happening in November, starting even before our meeting at 6:30 p.m. on the 13th at Fletcher Cove Community Center - Gardening, Solana Beach: CSI. Bring photos or physical evidence of crimes occurring in your garden for the confab, that Special Agent Hudson of H. A. Elliott Co. will be on hand to provide. Speaking of Environmental Education, our Oct. 6 Bulky Waste + Pesticide Clean Up collaboration with the City of Solana Beach, their waste collection partners, and Solana Center was a great success. If you missed the last meeting, you ll be proud to learn that we collected an estimated 800 pounds of unwanted pesticides and herbicides from you and your neighbors. Andi will provide a full debrief on the inaugural Roundup round-up. And there is so much happening in advance of our Nov. 13 meeting: Our own Christy Hendrickson has strawberry plants to share. christy5hendrickson@gmail.com Contact her at Nov. 2: Tina and Joe Zucker again open their garden for oohhing, aaahing and plants for sale, including holiday wreaths. Hours are Nov. 2: 10 am-3 p.m, Nov 3: 8 amnoon. If you would like a succulent wreath, let Tina know so she can have it ready for you. Her address is Tinazucker@gmail.com Continued on page 7. PAGE 7
