HEREFORD RANCH RV PARK June 19th to June 23rd, 2017 Trail Boss: Dave and Wanda Barsi The Cal Fire/CDF Wagon Train held it s 2017 summer camp-out at the Hat Creek Hereford Ranch Campground & RV Park. Mother Nature was kind to us (again), although it was a bit on the warm side! Dave and Wanda Barsi hosted again this year, and welcomed fourteen couples and their extended four-legged families. That evening Dave barbeque d tritip roasts and Brian cooked the corn-on-the-cob over the hot coals next to the beef. Wanda prepared the salad as well as all the mason-jar bugrepellant candles to keep the meat bees and mosquitos away while we stuffed our mouths. The next day started out at Crabtree s Bar, always famous for its wide selection of libations, as long as you like Lorraine s choice of the day! Dessert was a delicious lemon cake that fortunately survived the ride from Redding in the warm weather. Everyone turned in early, pooped out from the long drive and warm weather. 3 THE WAGON TONGUE Page 3 CAMP REPORT Hat Creek, California HEREFORD RANCH RV PARK June 19th to June 23rd, 2017 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2 Chef Kornegay got the day going with his famous rendition of Rosasco s omelets, along with many sides of bacon, sausage, fruit, and biscuits. IT WAS A BEARY GOOD TIME AT HAT CREEK facts keep getting changed a bit year after year! Dinner was on your own that night, although there was quite a bit of sharing between folks. After filling our bellies with all that delicious food, it was time to begin the games. Teams were made and practicing went on most of the day. Wednesday the games began. While the croquet court was set up, few brave souls participated in that demanding sport, and the ever-popular corn-hole competition drew the largest crowds. Some folks went fishing or hiking, while others just lounged around camp, telling the same stories about the same fires, although the Sharon Peterson demonstrated a new technique on making teddy bears out of towels. The dogs took their humans for walks around the park, and a few of us practiced weight-lifting with 12-ounce dumbbells. CONTINUED ON PAGE FOUR

4 Page 4 CAMP REPORT Hat Creek, California HEREFORD RANCH RV PARK June 19th to June 23rd, 2017 FALL 2017 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 Dinner was leftovers and whatever the men lied about cooking (it was men s night to cook, but we all know how that goes). Thursday was another beautiful day, and the semi-finals of corn-hole took center stage. That afternoon was the championship, with Rodd Richards and Vance Mason winning it all! Those of us that got whipped tossing bean bags enjoyed some cribbage and other table games in the pavilion. Our final dinner was another fantastic potluck topped off by the traditional ice cream social! 2017 Hat Creek Cornhole Champions Vance Mason and Rodd Richards Crabtree s Bar poured the last drinks after that, then it was time to turn in. No one seemed too happy to be packing up and leaving the next day, but the thought of the next get-together at Seven Feathers kept smiles on everyone s faces. We all said our good-bye s and headed home or to new adventures, having enjoyed the friendship and comradery of old and new friends. Speaking of traditions, the white elephant gift exchange was enjoyed around the campfire, and Wagonmaster Brian gave out the not-soexpensive prizes to the champs. 5 THE WAGON TONGUE Page 5 CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE Wednesday evening Welcome Drinks were hosted in the pavilion. It was all Smiles (and no dishes) after the Rolling Thunder BBQ. Thursday a.m. there was an optional seminar offered on performance breaking and conversions. Later in the evening, Bill and Joy Redding hosted a Hawaiian themed Welcome Dinner catered by Rolling Thunder BBQ Truck. The menu was your choice of a pulled pork sandwich or a tri-tip with sides, cookie, and a drink. The meal was a big hit! CONTINUED ON PAGE SIX

6 Page 6 FALL 2017 CONTINUED FROM PAGE FIVE On Friday the game of Corn Hole began with Brian Kornegay bringing two sets and then managing a terrific tournament for the next several days. 12 teams of two signed up for the Corn Hole tournament. Wildlife Safari, wineries, golf course, or the nearby casino. The grass was too lush and thick for croquet or bocce ball, maybe next trip. Sunday was another free day to relax and visit with friends, or swim in the heated enclosed pool, or relax in the hot tub. 7 THE WAGON TONGUE Page 7 CONTINUED FROM PAGE SIX Mike Lopez furnished us with a beautiful framed history of our patches to raffle...all proceeds went to our Benevolent Association. Sunday evening, the group enjoyed a potluck of appetizers in the pavilion. CDF Wagon Train rally in Canyonville, Oregon at Seven Feathers RV Resort Monday morning there was a potluck breakfast. Monday evening was an optional group dinner at the Casino Buffet which was very enjoyable. CONTINUED ON PAGE EIGHT

8 Page 8 FALL 2017 CONTINUED FROM PAGE SEVEN Tuesday morning a scouting party went out to search for Heaven on Earth. It turned out to be a wonderful home style restaurant with cinnamon rolls the size of your head. There was something for everyone during the Steal-A-Gift exchange game. Fourteen of us all together weren t able to polish off three of these cinnamon rolls. and the highly competitive and hilarious game of Steal The Gift exchange. On Tuesday evening the group got together for a sports themed potluck dinner, followed by awards CONTINUED ON PAGE NINE

They were congratulated and presented with a check for $1,000.00, oddly enough written from Brian s checking account! As if we hadn t eaten enough the group then enjoyed root beer floats as the evening closed down. No buildings are available for events on this trip. This will be an unstructured campout flying by the seat of our pants. (Under CDF Wagon Train) Fairgrounds RV Registration Form Notes: Please send an to Ed after you make your reservation with the Fairgrounds. Activities start on Tuesday but RV ers can reserve Monday night to show up a day early. This is the annual rally with the CDF 25-Year Club. More info to follow... Hi All As we approach the Holiday Season Nancy and I want to extend our best wishes for a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, and Happy Kwanzaa to you all was a great year of Camping starting out with a week in Tucson, a week in Jackson, a week in Hat Creek, then ended our season with a fantastic trip to Seven Feathers RV Resort in Oregon. What a fun year of RV ing. Those of you that were unable to make these trips missed out on a lot of fun and games, food, a few fire stories around the campfire, and good old-fashioned camaraderie is shaping up to be another super year with some outstanding upcoming campouts. In February, we will head back to Tucson, then in May will be the 25 Year Club Rally and Wagon Train Meeting. In June, the annual Hat Creek Campout will move to Eagle Lake and then September we will return to Seven Feathers in Oregon. There are also a couple other tentative campouts being planned and hopefully will materialize. We are looking at possibly something in the Bodega Bay area and one in the Quincy/Graeagle area. Would like to get something together in the Pismo Beach or Morro Bay area, and something in the south state. Would also like to see something for the kids and encourage young employees to attend with their kids. This all may not happen this year as it would make for a pretty full plate, but we are working on it. At any rate, I would encourage all members to make some comments and give us some ideas. What would you all like to see? Please let me, our Board Members, or your Region Representatives know we will be working hard to encourage new members to join the Wagon Train as well as getting our longterm members that haven t joined us in a while to come on back. It s a lot of fun and we want you all to come on back. We ll be working closely with Cal Fire Firefighters to assist in getting new members. We want to get the word out to all employees that they are all welcome to join in. I want to thank all those that attended our campouts this year and made them all so successful. Also, kudos to our Board Members, Region Representatives, Camp Hosts, and all those that helped organize these campouts. What a great time we all had. Thank you all for a successful As your Wagon Master, I look forward to 2018 and upholding our great traditions and history of our beginnings with CDF, and embracing our progression and growth with Cal Fire.
