Volunteer Vaquero AUGUST 2013 From the President s Pen Cheyenne Frontier Day s is upon us and the summer is now more than half over. Bummer. In a couple of weeks our own summer festival, the Arts and Craft Fair, will happen. So far we have at least forty paid vendors and varied entertainers scheduled to perform throughout the day. The only thing the committee has not planned for is the weather. We all wish for a bright, clear sky, and a warm day. Hope you all can come and enjoy the event. Speaking of event the Board would like to plan a field trip but needs input from the membership for ideas. After Bev s planned overnight trip to Dubois received few takers she cancelled it. So, the Board would like to hear from you on what you would like for a field trip. Do you prefer a short, one day outing traveling to museums or public interest sites in Northern Colorado, Eastern Nebraska, and Wyoming? Or a

one, two night stay at a place farther from Cheyenne? We can plan a trip to fit what you want. A fall trip would be nice with the great Indian summer weather we have in Wyoming. Think about it and please let us know what you want us to plan for you. Well, it s too nice to be indoors typing this, so I am stopping here and going outside to enjoy summer before it s gone. P.S. Carolyn Turbiville is now in charge of scheduling the front information desk. If you have questions or concerns, contact her. ************************************************* Artifact of the Month Mariah Emmons, Curator of Collections As long as we have had prisons, we have had prison escapes. The notorious outlaw Billy the Kid managed to escape from prison in 1881, but was captured and shot by Pat Garrett only a few months later. Frank Morris, John Anglin and Clarence Anglin escaped from the inescapable Alcatraz Island in They burrowed out of their cells, climbed to the top of their cell block, and cut through bars to make it to the roof via an air vent. From there they climbed down a drain pipe, over a chain link

fence and then to the shore where they assembled a pontoon type raft and then vanished. In The Great Escape, 76 Allied POWs (primarily Commonwealth airmen) escaped from Stalag Luft III during World War II. Fifty of the escaped POWs were rounded up and shot by the Gestapo, while only three succeeded in reaching neutral territories. On March 3, 1934, John Dillinger escaped from the Crown Point, Indiana county jail, which was guarded by numerous police officers and national guardsmen. Newspapers reported that Dillinger had escaped using a fake gun made from wood blackened with shoe polish. Wyoming s first state penitentiary, the Frontier Prison, was not immune to escape attempts. The prison operated from 1901 to 1981 and was designed by the same architects responsible for Alcatraz. Approximately 13,500 people were incarcerated here, including eleven women. Inmates were escaping as early as 1903 from the prison. In 1912, thirty prisoners escaped through the wooden stockade and barbed wire. The concrete walls and towers were completed in 1915 which helped stop mass escape attempts.

The sandals in the photograph belonged to an outlaw who killed game illegally. He was incarcerated at the State Penitentiary (now known as the Wyoming Frontier Prison) in Rawlins, Wyoming. The prisoner wore the sandals during an escape. Notice the deer hoofs nailed on them to keep from being tracked through the snow. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& I am sure that all of you know now that I am doing the monthly desk calendar for WSMV. I put together "bits and pieces" so hope I got everyone in their proper place. If not, please forgive me and let me know so I get it right from now on.

If you cannot work your assigned slot, please try to find a replacement. If you can't, please call me ( ). Do not leave a message. If I don't answer, call Heyward Schrock ( ). Again, do not leave a message as we are both busy retired people. Last resort, call the museum ( ). If no one answers, do leave a message. Carolyn Turbivlle Volunteer Desk Calendar %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% If you have not yet paid your dues for the 2013 year, please take care of it as soon as possible. Thanks! 7 Editor s Musings A 4 th of July to remember! Or at least for me.. My husband Joe and I were invited to the 4 th of July shindig up at Bev Goodman s place.to say the least we had no idea what to expect! The drive up was beautiful and when we got there the place just took our breath away! What a lovely place Bev lives in surrounded by rocks, trees, wildlife of all kinds and the quiet solitude of mountains. There were so many people there and we hardly knew anyone, but by the end of the day we had made acquaintances with many, shared good conversation, listened to music and eaten so much food that we felt like a nap! It was a lovely day and we sure enjoyed it.here are a few pictures of the fun you missed if you didn t show up! Thanks Bev for a great time!

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& Did you guess the answer for the What is it? If not here it is..the Arches at the Botanic Gardens across from the Frontier Park Museum. They are made of horse shoes! So.here is the next What is it..it is actually a who is it.have fun!

For those of you who haven t met our new Curator of Education, Nathan Doerr, stop in and find him.you ll not mistake him. He is the young man with the bow tie and beard.very neat guy.next Vaquero I will have an interview with him so look for it. This is just one of the 100 humming birds that were at Bev s feeders on the 4 th! They were so lovely and were big on buzzing everyone that was in the way of food! Bev says she has to refill the feeders several times a day.no doubt! About the Organization: From the inception in 1974, the WY State Museum Volunteers have been instrumental in assisting the art and education programs of the Wyoming State Museum. Their tie to these programming sections of the Museum remains strong today. Volunteers at the Wyoming State Museum are an important link between the Museum s professional services and the public it serves. In human terms, they represent the Museum s mission to the public.
