Location Cathal Brugha Street DIT is located in the heart of Dublin City Centre, set one block back from Dublin s main thoroughfare, O Connell Street. Public transport is widely available in the area with Dublin Bus Network right on the doorstep and LUAS (tram) Red Line a five minute walk. The recently completed LUAS (tram) Cross City tram line, extends the LUAS Green Line to provide northbound (O Connell Street) and southbound (Marlborough Street) lines immediately outside or adjacent to the properties. The immediate environs of the properties will soon benefit from hard landscape upgrading through Phase 1 of Dublin City Councils Public Realm Masterplan. The northern end of O Connell Street, adjacent to Cathal Brugha Street, is earmarked for a station on the proposed Metrolink rail line from Swords to Sandyford Prominent Dublin City landmarks are in close proximity such as the General Post Office (GPO), Gresham Hotel, Ambassador Cinema, Gate Theatre, St. Mary s (RC), Pro Cathedral, Croke Park and Tyrone House (Department of Education & Skills). In addition, key retail thoroughfares and shopping malls are minutes walk from the property such as Henry Street, Jervis Street Shopping Centre, Ilac Shopping Centre, Grafton Street and Stephen s Green Shopping Centre. Protected Structure Under the Dublin City Development Plan Record of Protected Structures, Cathal Brugha Street (Dublin College of Catering), Marlborough Street is recorded as a protected structure under Reference 1331.
4 Town Planning Cathal Brugha Street, Lot 1 and Marlborough Street, Lot 2 are located in the Local Authority Borough of Dublin City Council. The properties are zoned Z5 City Centre To consolidate and facilitate the development of the central area, and to identify, reinforce, and strengthen and protect its civic design, character and dignity under the Dublin City Development Plan Permitted uses to include, but not limited to hotel, office, residential, public house and restaurant. History DIT Cathal Brugha Street, Lot 1 has existed in its current location since There have been many changes in the seventy seven years since it was officially opened. In 1941, St. Mary s College of Domestic Science (now Cathal Brugha Street) was established as an integral element of the State s infrastructure for the education of young females. In 1944 Ireland s first Diploma in Dietetics course was designed and delivered in the College. In 1951 the College focused its attention on the education and training required for the growing Irish tourist industry. Also in 1951 the Department of Hotel and Catering was established and a two-year Diploma in Hotel and Catering Management for males and females was offered in 1952, which subsequently developed into a three-year full-time Diploma in Hotel Management in Around this time St. Mary s College of Domestic Science was renamed the College of Catering. In 1973 the Department of Home Sciences emerged offering an array of courses in Child Care and Social Studies in addition to the very popular Home Management Course. The School of Food Science and Environmental Health was formally established in the College in Student numbers continued to grow and with the College running out of space the extension on Marlborough Street, Lot 2 was constructed to provide modern laboratory facilities for the increasingly technical food science and environmental science disciplines. The College of Catering, which recently celebrated its 75th anniversary, was one of six colleges in Dublin City Centre, which collectively became the Dublin Institute of Technology in DIT restructured, the building became the main centre for the Faculty of Tourism and Food, which also saw a move of the School of Home and Social Sciences to the Faculty of Applied Arts.
