4 2016 Hobart must see and do Breweries and distilleries Cradle Mountain The major beer breweries - Boags in Launceston and Cascade in Hobart - inspire local pride and friendly rivalry. Both use the finest local hops and pure mountain water to create award winning lagers, ales, draught beers and boutique brews. And both boast impressive heritage buildings and great visitor centres with places to eat, drink, shop and relax. Cradle Mountain is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and one of the most interesting and most visited places in Tasmania. Located at the northern end of the Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park, Cradle Mountain is surrounded by glacial lakes, ancient rainforest, and unusual alpine vegetation. But it s not all about the big brewers. Tasmania has a long and growing list of craft breweries where you can meet a local brewer, learn a thing or two about the craft of boutique beer making and sample local brews that you may not find anywhere else. Given Tasmania s long standing reputation as the apple isle, it s also no surprise that there are plenty of delicious ciders made here, too. You ll find cideries in the apple and pear growing heartland of the Huon Valley and in the fertile soils of the North West. You can stroll from cascading rivers to dense, old-growth rainforest in just 20 minutes on the Enchanted Walk. For a more extended walk, the two-hour circuit of Dove Lake is one of Australia s great short walks or spend the entire day tackling Cradle Mountain summit itself. Tasmania s pure water is also perfect for distilling whisky, vodka and gin with several award-winning distilleries producing some of the world s greatest spirits. In fact, Tasmania has one of only two paddock to bottle single malt whisky distilleries in the world (the other is Kilchoman in Scotland). A range of tours are available from Cradle Valley, just outside the park boundary, including horseback trail rides and helicopter flights over the region s rugged mountains. There s a variety of accommodation options available but please note that accommodation and hotels at Cradle Mountain often sell out, particularly in the high season, so it s always wise to book early. Bruny Island MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) Bruny Island has some of Tasmania s most beautifully preserved natural environments with abundant wildlife and stunning cliff top views. The island is about 50 km long but appears to be two islands with North and South Bruny joined by a narrow strip of land called The Neck. The Museum of Old and New Art Mona is Australia s largest private museum and one of the most controversial private collections of modern art and antiquities in the world. Described by its owner as a subversive adult Disneyland, the collection includes everything from ancient Egyptian mummies to some of the world s most infamous and thought-provoking contemporary art. A highlight is South Bruny National Park, with towering cliffs overlooking long sandy beaches, coastal heathland, and underwater gardens of kelp seaweed with some amazing bushwalks to take it all in. The island is also a haven for many rare and endangered plants and animals. Exploring Bruny can be as quick and easy as taking a spectacular half-day boat cruise around the island, though a longer stay reveals the many secrets of this special place. Take time to enjoy the famous local produce; Bruny is home to producers specialising in oysters, cheese and chocolate. There are lots of places to stay with accommodation ranging from friendly campsites to luxury beachfront retreats. With around 300 art works on display, the collection takes up three floors within a subterranean architectural masterpiece and is guaranteed to impress.

5 Mt Wellington Kunanyi/Mount Wellington is a wilderness experience just a 20-minute drive from Hobart and is much loved by locals. The 21-km drive to the summit passes through temperate rainforest to sub-alpine flora and glacial rock formations, ending in panoramic views of Hobart, Bruny Island, South Arm and the Tasman Peninsula. The interpretation centre at the top protects you from the blustering winds while an open viewing platform on the western side of the car park looks out to the World Heritage Wilderness Area beyond. There are barbecues, picnic facilities and bushwalking trails for all fitness levels. Mountain activities also include trail biking and abseiling. Port Arthur Historic Site The Port Arthur Historic Site is Australia s most intact and evocative convict site and one of Australia s great tourist attractions. Located on the Tasman Peninsula, the site has more than 30 buildings, ruins and restored period homes dating from the prison s establishment in 1830 until its closure in During this time around 12,500 convicts served sentences and for many it was a living hell. Today, the site sits in 40 hectares of landscaped grounds and you ll need plenty of time to fully experience all that it has to offer. Salamanca Market Salamanca Market is one of Australia s most loved outdoor markets and can be found every Saturday morning, along the historic Salamanca Place, next to the Hobart waterfront. It s a destination that s hard to beat and is absolutely free to enjoy. The market has an eclectic mix of over 300 stallholders, showcasing the best that Tasmania has to offer. You will find delicious food, artisan jewellery, fine Tasmanian handcrafted timbers, handmade clothing, as well as vintage collectables, pottery, plants and flowers. Vineyards and wineries Tasmania offers an impressive range of elegant cool-climate wines with Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer all grown and produced locally with excellent results. Tasmania also enjoys an international reputation as a leading producer of some of Australia s premium wines. Wine routes are found north of Launceston in the Tamar Valley and east to Pipers River. In the south, the Derwent, Coal River and Huon Valleys together comprise the Southern Wine Route and are all within an easy drive of Hobart. You ll also find excellent wines produced along Tasmania s East Coast between Swansea and Bicheno.
