Design Group Report By Willard White Meeting: August 12, 2014 Objectives: Update specifications Wing Span Wing attachment location Rib locations Update Vc Progress on space to work on a project Achieved: We corrected Vc from 170K, which required a heavier wing, to 152K (170 smph). Wing span was increased from 20 feet to 22 feet to improve the climb of the VW airplane. Chord changes from 39.6 to 36, thickness is now 5.76 and AR is Esteban suggested we could save considerable weight by using 7075T6 (Cy 71,000 psi) on the inboard top spar cap. The rest of the spar caps (and the web) are 2024T3. We spent some time analyzing the fuel tank volume and location. We probably over-estimated the D-section area, so the tank turned out to be 61 inches long for ten gallons. It is currently located ahead of the spar from BL45 to BL 106. The Piper Cherokee fuel tank has no ribs; rather it is internally braced by two lateral hat sections on the upper and lower skins. These hat sections are held in place by sealed rivets. A slosh material exists to allow resealing the tanks in the field without dismantling them. Putting the fuel in the wing was a safety decision we made many months ago, but designing and building fuel storage in the wing is problematic. We'll see how Van's deals with it and reconsider. We had a lively discussion about space and failed to reach a consensus. We have failed to generate any support from the Chapter, so we considered renting space ourselves and concluded that with only four of us contributing it is too expensive. Before I finished putting it together, I realized I couldn't use it, so it's 90% assembled and ready to road. Fenders and lights are included in a box. 3 EAA Chapter 1514 Meeting Minutes August 5, 2014, 6:00 PM Lovezzola s Pizza, Pooler. The presentation was about back country flying and about the activities of the RAF in helping pass laws to support public use airports. While most of the back country airports are in the west, the RAF does have a lot of activity in the east, including Georgia, to promote recreational aviation. Of local note, the RAF will be having an event September flying from the Smokey mountains to the coast and stopping at several airports along the way, including Swaid s Field in Springfield (Sept 20 around noon) and ending at Berg Aerodrome in Midway. After the main presentation, Mike Wordell brought a video on Basic Survival skills for General Aviation. The business meeting opened by welcoming guests. Guests included: Mike Moore, who flew F-18s for the Marines for 10 years, and is now working in the Aviation Safety Office at Gulfstream. Bill Newborn attended the meeting from Hodges airfield (for those of you who know him, Bill hosts the monthly breakfast in his hangar at Hodges on the 3rd Saturday each month.) John Shrimplin has an interest in rotorcraft, and has a gyrocopter for sale. Guy Oren has been retired for 3 years, has been flying since the 70s, and holds instrument and land and seaplane ratings. The speaker was Eric Davis, Georgia liaison for the Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF), who gave a presentation on the their activities via Skype. Since the speaker was traveling in Denver, Colorado, and logging in remotely via Skype, the meeting started with the main presentation. According to information from the RAF website ( their organization s mission is Keeping the legacy of recreational aviation strong by preserving, maintaining, and creating public use recreational and back country airstrips Before the committee reports were given, there was discussion on supporting the RAF fly-in Sept 20 by putting on a barbecue lunch at Swaid s. There appeared to be some interest in doing this as a chapter activity. Stand by for further information and please contact one of the chapter officers if you are willing to volunteer to help. The committee reports are as follows: President s Report - Elections are coming up, and we are recruiting 2015 chapter officers. 4 Design Group continued from on page 1 building and self-educating. The community space downtown is a possibility out in the future somewhere, and we may not qualify anyway. We would like to do something to pass on our skills and enthusiasm to following generations and feel an obligation to do so. One conclusion we reached is that if we had a PLAN, a plan which would further local education and interest in Science Technology Engineering and Math, then we perhaps could attract sponsorship. This deserves further study since this is the direction we want to go anyway. Drop height worked out to be 15.6 with a 6 compression. Clmax is 2.3 for.25c flap extended 40 degrees, 42% of the wing is flapped. Horizontal tail area is 15.7 sq. ft., Vertical tail area is 7.2 sq. ft. Structure is generally 6061T T6 is used for the top spar cap inboard sections and 2024T3 is used for the remaining spar caps. Skin is.020 in. Forward spar at.3c, aft spar is at.7c Outer wing removable at BL 22, secured by two bolts on the forward spar, pinned by a single bolt on the aft spar. Landing gear is Grove (98,000 ksi KE per wheel, 5.35 pounds per wheel and brake) 500 X 5 ten ply tires 5.72 pounds each axles weigh.95 pounds each. Grove master cylinders weight 6.7 ounces each (two required) and reservoirs weight.5 ounce each. Landing gear will be attached at the firewall to allow for wing removal; track approximately 70 details (How many people are expected? What times will they be at Swaid s?). Minutes continued from on page 3 Design Team Report - We are back on wing design. There had been some concern that we were coming in overweight for the main spar, but a more rigorous check showed that the weight is about on target for the wing. The group has been looking into renting some workshop space (there is part of a hangar available at Hodges for $125/month) but we will have to check with EAA national to see what we can do as an official chapter project (there would be an additional insurance expense if done through the Chapter). Programs - In light of the video shown, Gary asked if there was an interest in finding a speaker to give a talk on survival skills. The September 2 meeting is scheduled to be Rick Gaffney on finding older aircraft and restoring them. The October 7 meeting is a speaker from Lockheed Martin Flight Services. The Nov 4 meeting is Michael Badger on Advanced Flight Simulation Dec 2 will be the annual Christmas Party at Carey Hilliard s in Garden City (Hwy 21). New Business Oshkosh had just finished, and Mike Wordell had a number of Oshkosh souvenirs to pass out Also, the FAA is asking for comments on non-aviation use of hangars at federally-funded airports (note that the FAA considers building an airplane in a hangar to be a non-aviation use if the airplane is not flyable).
