Retail Trade McAllen is the retail center of South Texas and Northern Mexico, drawing from a consumer base of over 10 million people within a 200-mile radius. In the bi-national metropolitan area, McAllen retailers serve a market population of 1.8 million. McAllen is represented by 40 of America s top 100 retailers and is ranked 3rd in Texas in per capital sales tax receipts. La Plaza remains one of the Simon Properties highest grossing retail malls (per square foot) in the United States, boasting average sales of over $ per square foot. Many national retailers located there are among the most profitable stores in their chains. The mall is known to generate more than 18 million visitors annually. Considering that the State s population is almost 27 million and statewide retail sales were approximately $350 billion, per capita retail sales statewide amounts to $14,790 while McAllen s is almost two times the state average and 153% of the average of the top 20. Bridge Crossings Two-way traffic across the International Bridges in the Rio Grande Valley handled more than 35.6 million cars and cargo trucks in 2006 as compared to 15.9 million in Laredo. The City of McAllen has owned and operated the international bridge at Hidalgo/Reynosa since On a typical day, two-way traffic will consist of 26,000 vehicles (non-commercial transits) and over 10,000 pedestrians. The Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge, located four miles east of the Hidalgo/Reynosa crossing, opened in January Two-way traffic is currently 13,694 cars and trucks per day. The trend is clear. The present rate of growth, a third international bridge will be needed in the near future. With the implantation of NAFTA and the continued integration of the maquilas operations, many companies are recognizing the McAllen MSA as an excellent location for their regional and corporate-support facilities.
