1 THE LION FOUNDATION COMMUNITY GRANTS APRIL 2017 MARCH 2018 THE RECIPIENTS OF OUR GRANTS ARE VASTLY DIFFERENT BUT THEY SHARE A COMMON FACTOR THEY EACH MAKE A LASTING DIFFERENCE TO THE NEW ZEALAND COMMUNITIES THEY SERVE SIMON WHYTE Chairman As Chairman of The Lion Foundation it is my pleasure to present our 2017/18 Grants List. We are an organisation that has gone from strength to strength and each year I m truly humbled to read the full list of grant recipients that do such great work across New Zealand. The Lion Foundation are in a privileged position to return over $37.8m back to the community and every day we feel inspired by the great causes enabled by our grants. significant amount of credit must go to Murray Reade A and his team. Through their expertise and sheer hard work The Lion Foundation has experienced another year of strong growth whilst maintaining a fine balance between supporting the community, reinvesting into the sector and supporting our venue operators in protecting customers from harmful gaming. It s important to recognise the people that make community funding possible, The Lion Foundation s loyal family of venue operators. Put simply, without their hard work there would be no money available for grants, and that fact is sometimes forgotten. So thank you to our venue operators and their staff, we appreciate your support and we will continue to represent your interests to ensure that the role of responsible operators is seen as paramount to safeguarding a sustainable funding sector. As I read through this Grants List it makes me immensely proud to play a part in enabling so many great causes. The numbers are impressive, but they are dwarfed by the passion and effort put in by the not-for-profit sector, which is made up of people working tirelessly to improve the wellbeing and prosperity of New Zealanders and our communities. A large proportion of organisations supported by The Lion Foundation are purely volunteer driven, therefore it would be remiss not to acknowledge the role of volunteers in keeping New Zealand communities moving forward. Reports show that each year 1.2 million volunteers contribute 157 million hours of their time, without which, charities, sports clubs and emergency services could become unsustainable. Despite these impressive statistics it is fair to say that charity and community groups are continuing the feel the pressure when it comes to sourcing financial support. In 2017/18 The Lion Foundation received an additional 250 grant applications than the previous twelve months and we regularly hear that a number of Class 4 Societies are taking a narrow focus to their distribution model. In doing so they exclude some outstanding causes and cut out the critical sectors of our society that need funding the most. The Lion Foundation would like to challenge those Societies to place the interests of the community at the heart of their decision making. Our industry should operate under the principle that the money belongs to the community and our role is simply to return it in the most effective and efficient way possible under the social license provided by law. Only when this culture exists will the collective Class 4 sector maximise their positive impact on society. I can reassure New Zealand s not-for-profit sector that The Lion Foundation will continue to support a broad range of organisations from the community, arts, culture, education, health and sport sectors through a well-balanced and inclusive funding model. In addition, applications that benefit the local community surrounding each Lion Foundation venue will be prioritised. We believe that money generated from our venues should be returned to the community that they operate in. The Charitable Gaming Industry has always received pressure from advocacy groups and the media, with 2017/18 being no different. Whilst we recognise that any industry with the potential to cause harm should receive a higher level of scrutiny, it is disappointing that some people ignore statistics and research in favour of an emotive argument. Problem Gambling is a complex issue and the removal of Gaming Machines is not the silver bullet solution. Publications of the Department of Internal Affairs show that since 2004 the number of machines and venues in New Zealand has halved, however problem gambling rates have remained steady. The Lion Foundation takes its responsibility towards problem gambling very seriously. As well as providing regular training to venue staff and collaborating with various harm prevention agencies we welcome moves to introduce new technology such as facial recognition and the development of a national database. At a policy level, The Lion Foundation will work closely with Central and Local Government to ensure a balanced argument exists and that decisions are factually based also saw a significant shift in the political landscape with the election of a Labour-led coalition Government as well as a new Minister of Internal Affairs. The Government has not yet advised the sector of any outcomes of the recently completed review of the sector and there have been no signals around change, however the Department of Internal Affairs has gone through a restructure to prepare themselves for the inevitable challenges that new technology will bring. Finally, I wanted to recognise my fellow Board members and members of our Regional Grant Committees. The Lion Foundation is fortunate to have a number of excellent Trustees who I believe lead the way in terms of best practice governance. Jackie Lloyd, Sarah Smith, Murray Gutry, Peter Kean and David Steele each provide invaluable support with Jackie, Sarah, Murray and Peter also Chairing their respective Regional Grants Committees, which are made up of outstanding representatives of their regional communities. It was pleasing to see this commitment to excellence in all aspects of governance, management and policies acknowledged during an independent review by Transparency International. This gives me great comfort that the custodianship of The Lion Foundation is as strong as it s ever been. Enjoy reading this year s Grant List, we hope that it inspires you as much as it does us. $37.8M in grants to communities across NZ this year COMMUNITY SPORT HEALTH EDUCATION $9.98M $15.61M $5.48M $6.73M 1

2 MURRAY READE Chief Executive The CEO's report It s been another pleasing year for The Lion Foundation; bringing a balanced focus to collaboration, returning funds locally and investing into our family of responsible operators has resulted in positive outcomes for everyone. e have continued to focus on community W funding through our Regional Grants Committees, which have all proven to be extremely effective. As a part of that process we continue to engage with community groups to determine how best to return the community funding generated by our venue operators. This has been achieved through the delivery of funding forums across the country, where The Lion Foundation team have provided insight into how our funding model works and how to best access the money that s available. I would like to thank all the community groups that have made the effort to participate in these forums. At this point it is also appropriate to acknowledge the sad passing of Bill Plunkett. Bill was a popular member of our Northern Regional Grants Committee, Chair of the Birkenhead Licensing Trust and held positions with Foundation North as well as Lotteries. Most importantly Bill was a loved and much respected part of Auckland s North Shore, well known for his direct approach and absolute commitment to a range of community groups. Bill s passion and knowledge will be missed by all of us. There has been a great deal of work undertaken by us, in partnership with the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) and relevant agencies around harm prevention, which is a key focus for us and the industry as a whole. The creation of the Gaming Machine Association of New Zealand (GMANZ) has given the Class 4 sector a collaborative voice on a number of important issues, with harm prevention being top of that list. I congratulate the DIA and those agencies involved for their efforts to minimise harm from gambling, but I would also like to pass on due credit to our venue operators for their efforts and commitment to the many measures developed to minimise harm. It has been a busy year for everyone at The Lion Foundation and I sincerely thank the team here for their continued commitment. I would also like to thank the DIA for all of their efforts during the year and the support they provide. And finally I must acknowledge and thank our venue operators, who have got behind our efforts to develop sustainable support for local communities, despite the everincreasing pressures they now face in operating their businesses. 18 GRANT N O Living Springs Trust Taking aim at the Canterbury Earthquake he Living Springs Trust in Christchurch has been Tattracting Cantabrians to kids camps, outdoor activities and training programmes for over 40 years. With a large natural playground consisting of native bush, a farm park and camping ground it s been able to offer an enriching and challenging experience, and with the addition of a large playing field for jamborees and concerts it seemed that they had everything in place, until the earthquake. With urgent restoration work needed it was the Lion Foundation that helped put their Founders Field back in operation. The players desperately needed all-weather facilities to support the exciting growth that football was seeing, and the Lion Foundation was happy to join the team. With our support two all-weather pitches will be created in the heart of Dunedin by the end of 2018, and already Football South is expecting 25,000 unique users in the first year! 20
