Cadel Evans completes his final UCI WorldTour event at the Santos Tour Down Under, finishing third. Fellow Australian Rohan Dennis is the overall winner. Australian Simon Gerrans crowned Santos Tour Down Under champion for a record fourth time with ORICA-GreenEDGE, celebrating double success after Caleb Ewan sprinted home to win the final stage. 6 EVENT OVERVIEW Seven o clock. The track is clear of vehicles and people all that remains is a ribbon of asphalt, 140 gleaming bikes and those who will race them. Until now the athletes have maintained an easy camaraderie, swapping stories about their training rides and sharing a laugh. It s the start of the season, after all, and most have abandoned Europe s icy grip for the South Australian summer. Last night they were presented to supporters in the city s heart, veterans of the sport standing alongside teenagers with big dreams and an even bigger opportunity. Tonight is business. It will reveal whose off season was well spent, who poses the biggest threat on the international stage. Tonight eyes are fixed straight ahead, muscles tensed and ready. The gun goes and they re off, pedals spinning, whipping around the first bend and towards another bank of people leaning in and yelling their support. Photographers are in their positions, shutters capturing the event in splitseconds. Journalists, laptops open, wait for the story. Above it all the chopper hovers, its cameras beaming the race to millions. This goes far beyond South Australia, though the state s unmistakable signature has shaped every aspect of it. The race is yet to be won. We must wait to see who tests their limits, who will return to these city streets in a week s time to claim victory. It s like no other time of the year. It s the Santos Tour Down Under and it is here. The nine-day Santos Tour Down Under has grown enormously from the grassroots event that began in 1999 as a platform to grow tourism in South Australia. As the premier Australian cycling race it commands international attention, with top teams and riders competing each year. Surrounding the on-road action is a festival of cycling. A welcoming party atmosphere is created in Adelaide and across regions hosting race stages, and fans are invited to be part of associated events such as the Bupa Challenge Tour presented by The Advertiser and Legends Night Dinner. The Santos Tour Down Under is owned and managed by Events South Australia the events arm of the South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC) on behalf of the South Australian Government. Eighteen staff work on the Santos Tour Down Under, including four focused on the event year-round, and hundreds more are involved on a contract or volunteer basis during January. Each role whether race director, traffic marshal, media manager, motorbike pilot, on-track commentator or security guard is crucial to the event s success. In 2008 the Santos Tour Down Under became the first cycling event outside Europe to join the prestigious Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) WorldTour. It proudly remains the first event on the international cycling calendar each year, with most riders leaving the freezing northern winter to compete under the South Australian summer sun. UCI WorldTour status ensures top teams and soughtafter athletes compete at the Santos Tour Down Under, all eager to secure points and start the season well. This is the timeslot allocated to the race by the UCI, and has numerous advantages. Taking place during the school holidays allows families and students from around Australia to visit South Australia and watch the race live, joining their local counterparts to cheer on cyclists as they vie for victory. January weather blue skies, balmy nights and plenty of sunshine also means the state is seen at its very best. Finally, leading the season ensures the international cycling world is paying close attention, further enhancing the event s profile. The Santos Tour Down Under is the largest and most prestigious cycling event in the southern hemisphere. It brings tens of thousands of visitors to South Australia each year, strengthens the state s international profile through media coverage and makes a major contribution to the local economy. 17 AWARDS OF THE RACE SANTOS OCHRE LEADER S JERSEY The Santos Tour Down Under Ochre Leader s Jersey is awarded to the rider with the fastest cumulative time at the end of each stage and to the overall winner at the end of the race. The ochre colour, first introduced in 2006, is strongly associated with Australia and is unique to the Santos Tour Down Under. In 2016 Australia s Simon Gerrans was awarded the Santos Ochre Leader s Jersey for the fourth time. SUBARU KING OF THE MOUNTAIN JERSEY The Subaru King of the Mountain Jersey is awarded at the end of each stage to the rider who leads the cumulative mountain points tally. Points are awarded to the first five riders over the summit of designated climbs throughout the race. Tour de France champion Cadel Evans won the Santos Tour Down Under s Subaru King of the Mountain Jersey in 2002, 2003 and The 2016 winner was Sergio Henao (COL) Team Sky. iinet SPRINT JERSEY The iinet Sprint Jersey is awarded to the rider who leads the sprint points tally after each stage. Points are awarded to the first three riders to cross the line at the designated sprints along the route. Australian cycling sensation Robbie McEwen has taken sprint jersey honours three times at the Santos Tour Down Under: 2002, 2004 and At the 2016 Santos Tour Down Under the jersey was awarded to ORICA-GreenEDGE s Simon Gerrans. YOUNG RIDER JERSEY The Young Rider Jersey is awarded to the rider aged under 26 with the fastest cumulative time at the end of each stage. Australia s Jay McCarthy from the Tinkoff team was the winner in MOST COMPETITIVE RIDER The Europcar Most Competitive Rider Jersey is awarded to the rider judged to have instigated the most attacks, breakaways or assisted their teammates to the best advantage during each stage of the Santos Tour Down Under. The Europcar Most Competitive Rider Jersey is not worn during the race but the rider who has received this accolade is identified in the peloton with a red race number. WILSON WINNING TEAM The Wilson Winning Team accolade is awarded to the team with the fastest cumulative time at the conclusion of the Santos Tour Down Under. The winning team is determined by adding together the times of the team s first four riders across the line for each race stage. 19 SANTOS WOMEN S TOUR JANUARY 2017 The Santos Women s Tour returned bigger and better in 2016 as a race with international status granted by world cycling s governing body, the UCI. Elite teams from countries including Norway, the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand competed against home-grown talent, with Orica-AIS rider Katrin Garfoot showing her strength in the sprints to seal overall victory. In 2017 we ll welcome elite women back to battle it out over four race stages. Fans can again look forward to two criteriums in the heart of Adelaide and two regional stages featuring a gruelling mix of sprints and climbs. 28 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN DESTINATIONS Adelaide is a city that lives well beyond its conveniently designed square mile epicentre, flowing seamlessly into world-famous wine and food regions such as the Barossa, just an hour s drive north, or coastal escapes in the Fleurieu or Yorke Peninsula. The Santos Tour Down Under has been hosted by hills towns Hahndorf and Stirling on a number of occasions and they really are stunning locations. With more than sixty wineries and acclaimed locally grown food and produce, the Adelaide Hills are one of Australia s best cool climate wine regions. There are also bike paths and walking trails to explore the wonderful scenery. The Barossa is considered to be home of Australian wine and with more than eighty cellar doors in the region travellers are spoilt for choice. Visitors can spend a day or two tasting the world-renowned wines and local cuisine. A two hour drive north of Adelaide and you ll reach the Clare Valley, which is famous for its Rieslings. The region is steeped in history and visitors can enjoy the heritage towns, boutique wineries, inviting country pubs, museums and galleries. The Fleurieu Peninsula is only an hour from Adelaide and is famous for whale watching (in season: May to October) and its amazing coastline.
