1 Victoria Chairman s Report As the days get shorter and the nights get colder and we receive some of the much-needed rain, it s a good time to catch up on some reading. With that in mind I hope the Victorian members are enjoying the Victoria Branch s e-newsletter that is created on a regular, or as needs basis that will keep you updated, along with the publications of The Order that have been expanded. A huge thank you to Fred Harrington OAM who is quiet a remarkable gentleman who has been co-opted to the Victoria State Branch Committee and one of his priorities is to look after the State electronic newsletter. I have already received some wonderful phone calls, s and face-to-face recognition of Fred s great work, with what has already been an e-newsletter of substance covering many different areas and regional groups and with some excellent light reading. Fred doesn t look for any recognition for what he is doing, but if anyone gets a chance when you see Fred face to face, perhaps extend your congratulations to him. In another area, details are slowly coming out about Mr John Frost AM and his organisation; The Gordon Frost Theatrical Company, who have put in place a special offer for Association Members in Victoria and we are rolling this out nationally. You will read here in The Order, details of Mr Frost and his significant contribution to Australian theatre and also his way of giving back to our members. There will be code when booking tickets of Productions Mr Frost is presenting where you will substantially save on the ticket price, and occasionally he will allocate tickets for our use when his shows are performing in various States across Australia. For this wonderful gesture we thank Mr Frost and his entire organisation and we look forward to being a part of great shows such as Anything Goes and Legends; both currently playing in Australia. I would like to congratulate all of the Queen s Birthday recipients of an Order of Australia and I look forward to writing to each of them to welcome them and to invite them to join the Association. Victoria leads the way with the conversion rate with recipients who receive an Honour within the Order of Australia and become members of the Association but we would always welcome more. That is very much up to State Branch and branch committees of every Regional Group to make one on one contact via letter or phone to our new recipients. Last time at Government House for the Governor s last investiture of recipients, it was a record number and our Governor, Alex Chernov AC QC and Mrs Chernov, were delighted that one of their final functions within their term as Governor, was one of the largest groups ever presented and that the ceremony is now streamed live via the internet. I know that on behalf of all members of Victoria Branch, our Regional Groups and all Association members, I would like to thank our retiring Governor and his wife for their commitment to the position. Their friendliness and support of the Association, and more importantly, for all the wonderful events they attended without fanfare or media, simply because they are two great Australians. Personally, I have seen Mr & Mrs Chernov on Christmas Day for the past two years, where they have attended in their own time, the Malvern Town Hall. There, Christmas luncheon is served for the pensioners, single parents, physically and mentally disadvantaged, and wards of the State. They are served three courses, enjoy entertainment, a take home pack of goodies, and most importantly friendship, a hand shake, a smile, a kiss, and have someone around them who cares on a very special day. The Governor & Mrs Chernov serve soup on the day and mix and mingle with all the guests and are never in a hurry to leave but give quality time for those in attendance. We are so lucky to have wonderful people that we as Association members can network with, and I continue to encourage all of us to think how we can make Australia a better country, how we can mentor the young, and how we can continue to give back wherever possible. 2 In order left to right the three finalists: Newtown Primary School, Our Lady Star of the Sea Ocean Grove Primary School and the Geelong Baptist College Barwon regional group Primary School Citizenship Award A vision of Barwon Regional Group Treasurer Wayne Myers OAM came to fruition in May when the inaugural Primary School Citizenship Award was presented to a primary school that had undertaken a project with their students that promote the value of Australian citizenship in some way. The award is in line with the Associations aim to foster love of and pride in Australian citizenship. All primary schools in the greater Geelong region were invited to submit project applications and the selection panel being Maureen Zampatti OAM, Professor Geoff Wilson AM and Wayne Myers OAM shortlisted the applications to three. These schools were invited to make a presentation to OAA Barwon Regional Group members and guests at morning tea. The Geelong RSL was an in kind sponsor and their President Andrew Hanns noted this award fitted their goal of supporting children during the centenary of Anzac. Barwon Regional Group Chair Barbara Abley AM, presented each of the finalists Geelong Baptist College, Newtown Primary School and Our Lady Star of the Sea Ocean Grove Primary School with a certificate and the winning school Newtown Primary School with a cheque for $500 from the OAA Barwon Regional Group. The Geelong RSL President presented the winning school with the bronze replica of the Spirit of Anzac as a perpetual trophy. Newtown Primary School submission focused on the significant planting of a Gallipoli Oak, grown from acorns brought home from Turkey by Captain William Lempriere Winter-Cooke and planted by his family in 1916 in Victoria at Murndal near Hamilton. Each school grade also planted a tree as a symbol of regrowth and renewal forming an avenue of trees leading to the Gallipoli Oak. Wreaths were made with the classes and community members encouraged to participate in the wreath laying ceremony. Birds on a Wire by Leonard Cohen was the hymn performed by the school chaplain. On May 29 Barwon Regional Group Secretary Helene Bender OAM presented Newtown Primary School with a Lone Pine Tree propagated from the tree at the Australian War Memorial. This gift was a donation from the Cemeteries & Crematoria Association of Victoria. The school will celebrate the planting on August 6, 2015, the centenary of the Battle of Lone Pine; Amanda Hay, the School Principal was delighted to receive a tree to complement their Gallipoli Oak in the centenary of ANZAC. 3 BARWON : City of Greater Geelong s Centenary of ANZAC In February 2015, Dr Cr Stretch Kontelj OAM was honoured to be appointed as the inaugural portfolio holder for Veterans Affairs in the City of Greater Geelong. It is his understanding that the City is the first local Council in Australia to initiate a Veterans Affairs portfolio. He has been a Councillor with the City since 1998 and a Specialist Reserve Legal Officer with the RAAF since To be able to combine these two interests as the portfolio holder for Veterans Affairs has been particularly fulfilling. It is also a very special privilege to work closely with the Veteran community in acknowledging the Centenary of ANZAC and the contributions that all our service men and women have made and continue to make through national service. A key event in the City of Greater Geelong s Centenary of ANZAC calendar was the commissioning of an audiovisual digital projection programme that illuminated the front façade of Geelong s City Hall. The projections featured historic ANZAC footage alongside contemporary imagery and animations to pay tribute to the legacy of our WW1 servicemen and women. Local multimedia projection artist Matt Bonner was appointed to deliver the project sourcing material from the Geelong Heritage Centre, Osborne Park Association, State Library of Victoria, Geelong Advertiser, RSL members, and the National War Memorial. The projections were launched by the Mayor of Geelong, the colourful Cr Darryn Lyons, with an official ceremony on the evening of April 17, This featured a formal military guard from Alpha Company 8/7 RVR and an RSL flame presentation by two light horsemen in World War 1 uniform. Cadets from all Services were represented and played a vital role in the event, in many ways symbolically reflecting the age of many young men and boys who went off to war far too young and paid the ultimate price on the shores of Gallipoli. The Salvation Army brass band played music of the time. The projections paid tribute to the military service of men, and the dedication of our service women serving as nurses in absolutely harrowing conditions. We were also proud to acknowledge the role that local Aboriginal men from the western districts of Victoria played in World War 1. Military conflict is a tragic part of our history. The cost of our participation in conflict zones and peacekeeping efforts is often seen through the sacrifices of our servicemen and women and the families they leave behind. Dr Kontelj is conscious that the legacy is left not just by those who do not come home, but also from those that returned carrying the physical and emotional scars of their service. Council is committed to working with Service clubs to support and honour the contributions of our historic and contemporary servicemen and women. As we look to the future, we will mark the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War in 2016 and the Centenary of Peace in Lest we Forget. Dr Cr Stretch Kontelj OAM Dr Cr Stretch Kontelj OAM with Mayor Lyons & Mayoress Elissa Friday INTERFAITH FESTIVAL In conjunction with Mornington Peninsula Interfaith Network the Annual Interfaith Festival was held on Sunday 7th June at Peninsula Community Theatre Mornington. The theme for the Festival was A Celebration of Diversity and included in the Opening Ceremony was a Blessing given by 7 different Faith Leaders. The Regional Group presents Certificates of Acknowledgement to a Community Group each year and this year it was Girl Guides Victoria. Certificates were presented to Jan Withers on behalf of Girl Guides Victoria and seven local Groups who put on displays and participated in the various workshops. These included Indigenous Art, information about various Faiths, African Drumming, One Voice Choir, Laughter Yoga, Maori Singing and showing of the Mornington Peninsula Cultural Diversity Short Film Festival. Over 400 people attended during the fine day. GIPPSLAND The Group s first luncheon of the year held at Traralgon Winery in May with Guest Speaker Vicki Hamilton OAM, CEO of Gippsland Asbestos Related Asbestos Diseases Support Inc. Vicki, whose family has suffered as a result of asbestos exposure, gave a passionate and informative address which was greatly appreciated. Part of the proceeds of the luncheon and extra donations on the day were donated to Centenary House, a wonderful facility sponsored by Gippsland Rotary Clubs, which provides accommodation for outpatient cancer sufferers from all over Gippsland. Members are proud that formal Anzac Day participation this year was greatly increased, with wreaths being laid at six major towns. Doug Caulfield OAM attended the Gallipoli Service, while Beth Delzoppo OAM was present at the Villers Bretonneux ceremony. The next luncheon with Guest speaker Major General Michael O Brien CSC MDA BSc will be held in Paynesville on August 30 th. Among other activities he was in charge of the recovery and identification of the bodies of Australian soldiers at Fromelle on the Western Front and has other interesting and little known stories of the War. The third annual Macfarlane Burnet Dinner and Oration will be on 21 st October at the Premiere Reception Centre Traralgon. Guest Speaker will be Professor Brendan Crabb AC, the CEO of the Burnet Institute. It is hoped members of other branches will attend. Page 32

4 LODDON CAMPASPE The Committee of the Order of Australia Loddon Campaspe Branch organised a well attended luncheon for members and their guests at the Capital theatre building in Bendigo. Chairman Gordon McKern welcomed members and guests and introduced the guest speaker the Hon. Howard Nathan QC, a retired Supreme Court Judge who entertained with anecdotes from his years in the Court system. CENTRAL HIGHLANDS The Annual May Luncheon attendees heard Guest speaker Mr. Paul Jenkins OAM provide recollections of his trip to Gallipoli with local School students. The Spring Luncheon on 25th October will be held in Horsham in an endeavour to join up with the members in the Wimmera region. The Schools Citizenship Awards in conjunction with the City of Ballarat will be conducted again. Each of the 8 secondary schools in Ballarat selects a senior student whom the school believes has made the best contribution to their Community and School. In conjunction with the City of Ballarat, the Group will host a Civic Reception and Presentation to each of the 8 students selected. Members of the Group took part in Wreath Laying Ceremonies in and around Ballarat and over the entire region on Anzac Day. The classic musical by Cole Porter, Anything Goes, stars Caroline O Connor, Todd McKenney and Gerry Connolly, is currently playing in Melbourne before touring to Brisbane and Sydney. Legends! is a hilarious comedy starring Hayley Mills, Juliet Mills and Maxwell Caulfield about two feuding Hollywood stars of yesteryear brought together to star in a Broadway play. In partnership with The Really Useful Company Asia Pacific, John presented The Phantom of NORTH CENTRAL SUBURBS The committee is planning for an end of year function, which will include recognition of new awardees, and the AGM. The Group has received invitations from other Regional Groups and members have attended the Open Day at Cruden Farm and the tour of Parliament House. The committee has also been assisting an indisposed Doreen Akkerman AM, chair of the Northern Suburbs Regional Group, through the distribution of invitations to OAA activities and a letter seeking members comments on the proposed future direction of their Regional Group. NORTH EAST VICTORIA & GOULBOURN VALLEY A luncheon will be held at the Trawool Resort, South East of Seymour, on Sunday 16th August. The guest speakers will be Kevin Butler OAM and Rhonda Butler OAM of Blazeaid fame. Five members from this Group attended the Perth National Conference. The Foundation s 2014 Scholarship awardees were announced and presented by Her Excellency the Hon Kerry Sanderson AO. The two young women gave remarkably articulate presentations in appreciation. They are Vaishali Ghosh who is studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Danielle Hardie who is studying Animal and Agricultural Sciences, both at The University of Adelaide. They will surely make a positive contribution to our nation! That our Association can assist young people of this calibre in financing their studies when they would otherwise struggle, is surely a good argument for becoming financial members of the Association. the Opera Australian tour starring Anthony Warlow. In 2009 John was represented on Broadway with the play, Exit the King, starring Geoffrey Rush and Susan Sarandon. Also in that year, John brought Mandy Patinkin back on tour to Australia with fellow theatre icon Patti LuPone. In London, John was one of the producers of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and in 2010 he produced Julie Andrews in the concert event The Gift of Music at the O2 Arena. John was recently represented in London s West End with the hit shows The Bodyguard and Blithe Spirit. In the 2014 Queen s Birthday Honours John was awarded an AM for his contribution to the Arts. Mr Frost wishes you a happy and healthy 2015, and hopes you get a chance to enjoy all the wonderful theatre on offer. Page 33

5 EASTERN SUBURBS REGIONAL Group After a most successful visit and guided tour of the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance in April followed by lunch in the Botanic Gardens for 30 guests, the Group looks forward to future events and invites any members and their friends to attend. The second function for the year was a guided tour of State Parliament House where the Group was treated to a wonderful tour by a former Speaker of the House, John Delzoppo OAM who had been Speaker from The guests sat on the green plush seating of the Legislative Assembly Chamber and John held court from the Speaker s chair. This is situated between a pair of Roman style Ionic columns and with three Waterford crystal chandeliers suspended from the ornate gold-leafed ceiling. A prominent feature of the Assembly Chamber is the Table where important parliamentary proceedings take place. The various procedures which take place before any debate can take place, were explained. The group then inspected the red velvet plush interior of the Legislative Council Chambers. Before lunch, the Group were shown the wonderful oil-painted portraits of previous Prime Ministers which grace the walls of the Queen s Hall which separates the two Chambers, plus the huge marble statue of Queen Victoria which has dominated the east end of the Hall since Bruce Atkinson MLC gave many insights into his role as President of the Legislative Council and those who attended all felt that they had learned something about the workings of our Parliament. All were overwhelmed by the magnificence and grandeur of this historic building. The eminent Guest Speaker at the Christmas in July luncheon at Bucatini Restaurant, Mitcham in July was Dr. Heather Sheard speaking on the topic Australian Women Doctors during World War 1. New Order of Australia Award recipients will be invited to a Cocktail Party to be held in October and the AGM will be on the 4th November in the Box Hill Library. Guest speaker will be Ian Crawford from Crawford Productions. SOUTH CENTRAL SUBURBS Presentations to Community Groups To assist in raising community awareness of the Order, a program of presentations has been instituted. The prime motivator for this action is to help drive more nominations especially to recognise those who tirelessly serve their local communities. The Group sent local Rotary Clubs a short letter advising the It s an Honour website references to the Award, details on how to find the names of local recipients and also how to nominate people for an Award. More presentations will be made between now and Australia Day To support the presentations the Group has developed an Order of Australia Fact Sheet. A coloured, high quality Association Fact Sheet on the Order would assist and help ensure consistency between Groups. The Group is also hoping to enlist the three local Councils in this awareness-raising program to help promote the Order to the community. Already the Mayor and Governance Manager of Bayside Council have shown support. The need for continual awareness should be raised at all future events to encourage all recipients of the Order to become advocates for the Award and promoters of nominations for deserving individuals. The Group believes that there should be a universal OAA fact sheet that can be used by all Regional Groups. New member function/local welcome to the Order event This event is planned, hosted and conducted by each of the three local Councils in turn. Members really appreciate this event as it provides an opportunity for the local Council to meet and congratulate their new Award recipients. For the Association, it is often the first contact with prospective new members. Bayside Council will host the event this year on Friday 14 August To help ensure a continual high standard and consistency in this event, and to build on experience to date in conducting these events, the Group has drafted and trialed with Bayside Council an Event Guide, as a basis for discussion with the Council. It is available to other Regions on request. South Central Suburbs Regional Group aims to enlist as many new Award recipients into the Association as possible and hope that a high standard at this initial meeting with help make this objective more likely. Victorian Schools Debating Competition The Group continues to sponsor this competition. During August and September, the finals will be held throughout Victoria and several Committee members expect to attend the finals in our region and present awards to all participants plus books for their school library. This debating program is an excellent training exercise for the leaders of tomorrow and is an excellent vehicle for the promotion of the Order of Australia and its objectives to a wide audience of young people and the school staff. SOUTH WEST VICTORIA A luncheon was held at Dalvui the home of our group President Peter Habersberger AM RFD. Dalvui is a wonderful home in the middle of breathtaking gardens. The speaker for the luncheon was Peter Habersberger and Peter gave a very topical and interesting address of historical facts from World War 2. The Group were pleased to welcome Glenys Phillpot OAM and Margaret Shimmin AOM new members from this years Australia Day honours to our Group. The South West Group were again very active on Anzac Day, and were represented at wreath laying ceremonies at 7 locations. The Secretary, Duncan Stalker OAM attended and spoke at two Anzac Day Ceremonies in the morning before heading back to oversee the arrangements for the Warrnambool Ceremony. WESTERN SUBURBS The Western Suburbs Regional Group had another very successful and interesting luncheon at The Strand restaurant in Williamstown on 7th May, highlighted by guest speaker Max Chester, OAM, KCSJ, a Privileged Member of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects. Max spoke about architecture and housing in Melbourne suburbs, featuring many of his own experiences and insights, with some reference to Walter Burleigh Griffin, the major architect of Canberra. Initiated by chairman Vance Hilton OAM, committee members have met with the Mayor of the City of Melton to discuss participation in civic events in Western Suburbs municipalities and also offered to run tutorials in writing applications / submissions for awards in the Australian Honours system.
