2 T.U.R.B. INTRODUCTION The Trade Union Research Bureau (T.U.R.B.) is an independen t labour research organization which has served Western Canada's trad e unions for many years. Originally established as a Canadian branc h of the Pacific Coast Labour Bureau in 1938, it was re-organized i n 1946 as an independent, locally-owned business and given its presen t name. Seventy-five boxes of T.U.R.B. files have been donated to th e Special Collections Division of the U.B.C. Library. These includ e union audits, case files, source files, union newspapers and conventio n reports, etc. The files date from the 1930's through to the 1970's an d provide a valuable source of information on B.C.'s trade unions. Although primarily involved with B.C. unions, T.U.R.B. has also worke d for various unions outside the province. An inventory has been prepared in which the files are liste d according to the union involved. Those files containing materia l dealing with more than one union have been cross-listed. There ar e also separate headings for those items which do not directly concer n a specific trade union. As an example, any files concerned with a union and the City of Vancouver would be found listed ONLY under th e appropriate union. Only when a file concerning the city does no t involve a specific union will it be listed in the inventory unde r the City of Vancouver. The files remain in the same boxes and in th e same order as they were when donated, although they have been renumbered. For information on T.U.R.B. aside from its labour research component, see the records listed on p. 105.
