1 REPORT OF THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT June 2, 2017 to August 27, 2017 It should come as no surprise that since the last national executive in June, work at the national office has mainly focussed on preparation for the UNE convention. The three convention committees met in June and their reports were completed and distributed soon after. If success were based on the long and hard work by staff and others, we should have a good convention indeed. Collective agreements for the four Treasury Board bargaining units with UNE members PA, TC, EB, and SV were ratified by the membership in early spring and signed June 14, While these agreements came into force only two months ago, they will expire next year. By now, all UNE Locals with Treasury Board members should have received the Program of Demands. Those Locals will be holding membership s this summer and fall to develop proposals and determine priorities. Once that information is sent to the UNE, we will establish a committee to review demands and send proposals to the PSAC. The national bargaining conference will take place early next year. UNE and Parks Canada met to discuss the remaining National Review Project files. We will be able to advise members at convention that UNE s direct responsibility for the Parks Project is now finally at an end. As I reported previously, the OLG announced in May 2017 that the operations of the Rideau Carleton Slots would be taken over later this September by Hard Rock. In July, we had an initial with the Senior Vice-President of Human Resources at Hard Rock. UNE met with senior PSAC staff to review the factors that contributed to the decertification of our Candu Energy unit and discussed how we can better serve the interests of members in small bargaining units. UNE and PSAC have sought respondent status in Occupational Health and Safety Tribunal hearing into a death of one of our members in the Banff field unit at Parks Canada. 1
2 I attended two of the last three PSAC regional conventions, which were for the Atlantic and North regions. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the BC convention as it was held on the same weekend as the PSAC North convention. I chaired the all-candidates at the Atlantic convention.
