2 2 CHAIRMAN S WORD A Century of Good This column has previously focused on the importance of keeping our culture, traditions and history alive and never forgetting the people, events and institutions that have shaped our nation. Institutions have ranged from political and social to the arts and sport and have embraced a myriad of national and suburban causes and issues. Many have been influential momentarily and have then drifted off to obscurity having made their mark for good or otherwise. Others have stood the test of time and continue to maintain their status of reflecting all that can be good in human endeavour. I was privileged to observe a living example of this when I was the recent dinner guest of such a long standing institution at Queen s Hall in Parliament House. The occasion was The Australian Queen s Scout Association Founder s Day Dinner on the birthday of the founder of scouting Lord Robert Baden- Powell and to also celebrate the Centenary of the award of the first King s Scout badge in The evening projected fellowship, goodwill and dedication to community service, the very qualities that have ensured the longevity of Scoutcraft for more than a century. Lord Baden- Powell of Gilwell would have approved! Don Hyde AM Chairman Key Role For Regional Groups in Association Growth (Victoria Branch Deputy Chairman Country & Regional Co-ordinator Kevin Howard OAM) Victoria is currently divided into 17 defined Regional areas or Groups. Eleven of these Groups are already established. Of the six not yet established (four metropolitan and two country) three are being administered by adjoining Regions. In this Newsletter I wish to focus on two major factors that will have a significant impact on the future growth of Regional Groups and their role in the functions of the Association in Victoria. REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT During 2010 the Regional emphasis will be on reviewing, restructuring where appropriate and establishing new Regional Groups. This will be done by input from Regional representatives and in some cases surveys of Association members. As a result of some difficulties experienced by the Western Suburbs Regional Group I am currently conducting a survey of members in that Region. If you have not yet responded to the survey please do so as your comments are important. The Mallee Region covers the municipalities of Mildura City, Swan Hill Rural City, Yarriambiack Shire, Hindmarsh Shire and Buloke Shire. If you live in one of these local government areas you will shortly receive a survey seeking your interest in establishing a Regional Group in the area. The results of the survey will enable the Victoria Branch to decide whether or not a Group should be established to be known as the Mallee Regional Group. The Grampians-Wimmera Region covers the municipalities of Horsham Rural City, West Wimmera Shire, Northern Grampians Shire and Southern Grampians Shire. This Region has a very small number of Association members, the majority of whom are already participating in the activities of the Central Highlands or South West Victoria Regional Groups. The proposed survey of these members will be seeking to determine whether there is justification to have a separate region defined for this area or should the existing practice be formalised. Surveys of the Metropolitan Regions will take place during the second half of the year. MEMBERSHIP AND THE ROLE OF REGIONS For several years Victoria has been making very determined and concerted efforts to have the role and responsibilities of the Regional Groups recognised by the National Committee. As an outcome of the 2010 National Conference (just completed in Adelaide), I am delighted to say that at last all those efforts have come to fruition and from now on Regional Groups will be expected and required to take a leading role in attracting new members to the Association. We have fought for this and now we must ensure that we make a huge success of the challenge. Every member will have an opportunity to encourage new awardees and existing non-members to join the Association. I am certain that you as a member will accept this challenge. Your Regional Committee will provide you with more details of the procedures they will follow, during the course of your functions and activities over the coming months. I am looking forward to working with your representatives and hopefully attending some Regional functions during the year.
3 3 Flying the Flag on Australia Day at Victoria Barracks With their ages ranging from five years old to a sprightly ninety-one, over one hundred members of the Association and their guests, attended the Flag Lowering Ceremony at Victoria Barracks in Melbourne, to mark Australia Day Guest Speaker, Anne Pahl, provided a briefing on Australia s current Defence overseas commitments and discussed the adjustments that many of our young soldiers (and their partners and families) have to make when they return to Australia. Co-Ordinator of the event and Master of Ceremonies was Brigadier Geoff Christopherson AM whilst parade ground commentary was handled adroitly by Group Captain Rowan Story AM The flag was lowered with great precision at the end of a perfect Victorian day by the Air Force cadets accompanied by a combined military band of musicians from the 2/10 Field Regiment and 4/19 Prince of Wales Light Horse Regiment led by Bandmaster, Warrant Officer Stephen. Members and Guests then retired to the Officers Mess for refreshments while the band played on until dusk. Australia Day Flag Raising Ceremony at Melbourne Town Hall Several members of the OAA Committee attended the Flag Raising Ceremony at the Melbourne Town Hall on the morning of January 26 as guests of the Australia Day Committee and enjoyed the exuberant and colourful celebration parade that followed. Highlights of the parade were more than sixty community groups, many in their colourful national costumes and two ten-foot kangaroos hopping on huge springs up and down Swanston Street. Everyone was so proud to be Australian!
4 4 Passing of Former Victoria Branch Chairman Captain Charles Flaherty Captain Charles Ivan Flaherty AM. RFD. RANR (ret) passed away in Melbourne in December a few days short of his 81st birthday. Charles was among the first group of recipients in the Order of Australia, and in March 1977 was presented with his award by Her Majesty the Queen at an investiture at Government House Canberra. He was one of the early members of the newly formed Order of Australia Association, Victoria Branch and served as a committee member , delegate to the National Committee and Chairman of the Victorian Branch With Harry Powell as Secretary and Geoff Stevens as Treasurer they formed a successful and harmonious team. Many happy social events were organised, the most notable being the coach trip to Sydney for meetings and celebrations of the Bi-centenary in In more recent years, ill health prevented Charles from attending many functions, but his interest in the Order of Australia remained strong. He will be sadly missed. In a distinguished career Charles Flaherty wore many hats in his time including, Merchant and Naval Captain, Compass Adjuster, Aide de Camp to the Queen, Member of the Order of Australia. His first voyage to sea was as a young boy, down to Tassie for summer holidays aboard his father s ketch the Milleeta. From then on he knew his career would be as a sea Captain. He never considered anything else. Vale. Rino Codognotto OAM. Hospitality Industry Leader & Iconic Restaurateur Rino Codognotto who passed away in January was an icon in the Melbourne hospitality scene as was the Society Restaurant at the top end of Bourke Street. Rino left school at fifteen years of age to work in the family business, The Italian Society Restaurant. He was born in 1922 at Pravisdomini in Italy and he came to Australia with his family in the 1920 s. He served in the Australian Army from 1942 to 1946 and married Ita Maloney in In 2009 Rino and Ita celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. He retired as a restaurateur in 1982 but continued to be active in the food and wine scene. He was made a life member of the Mirabooka Branch of the Beefsteak and Burgundy Club in 1978 and was made a Food and Wine legend in In 2007, Rino was awarded an OAM for his service to the hospitality industry. On Friday 5th February, Rino Codognotto s life was celebrated with a solemn requiem Mass at St. Patrick s Cathedral and recognised as a person who had made a major and positive contribution to the community life of Melbourne. He was indeed an icon. New National President Announced at Annual Association Conference The Hon. Shane Stone AC was named as President at the 24th National Conference held in Adelaide from 11th- 14th February and replaces Dr. Neil Conn AO whose term had expired. Social highlights of the Conference were the Welcome Reception at St. Peter s College attended by the Governor of South Australia Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR and Mrs Scarce, the State/Civic Reception at the Adelaide Town Hall, the Multi- Faith Observence at Bonython Hall and the Conference Dinner at the Adelaide Convention which featured the Foundation Scholarship awardees. The innovative Members Open Forum was a popular and well attended event which provided members with the opportunity to participate in discussion on the future of the Association. The 2011 National Conference will be held in Hobart to which all members are invited to attend.

6 6 Eastern Suburbs Group Since the last newsletter Bill Horman AM, Keale Way AM, Paul Wheelton OAM and Alex Wilson OAM have joined the committee providing added strength, foresight and commitment. Unfortunately, our Deputy Chairman Russell Payne OAM has resigned due to poor health and Keith Rooney OAM has assumed the Deputy Chairman position as well as being immediate Past Chairman. On Wednesday 24th February approximately 50 members attended a talk at the Toyota Nunawading site by Mrs Marjorie Morgan OAM on Impressionist Artists and the Heidelberg School. The talk was preceded by a brief overview of the current state and intentions of the ESRG committee by the Chairman, Bob Law AM. This was followed by morning tea and Marjorie s talk. All attending were unanimous in their appreciation of Marjorie making her time available to present a most informative and interesting talk on the local artists, their way of life and idiosyncrasies.. Her delightful book Prelude to Heidelberg The Artists Camp at Box Hill has just been published in its second edition and is available from the Box Hill City Offices for $38. Marjorie Morgan An interesting schedule of activities is being finalized for The next function is at the Box hill Town Hall Art Space, 1022 Whitehorse Road, Box Hill on Tuesday 13th April at 2:15pm. All are welcome. This is a continuation of the artistic them from Marjorie s talk and will include art at present in Council s archives. It is with much sadness we inform members of the passing of and we extend our condolences to the families of Mr Loris F Sartori OAM and Mr Rino Codognotto OAM. South Central Suburban Group As this Regional Group enters its third full year, it is building on a good start. The membership list has been consolidated and the new Committee is busy planning activities for the year. Local Honours awardees from the Cities of Bayside, Glen Eira and Kingston are able to come together at small, intimate and inexpensive functions to make new friends and enjoy each other s company. In addition to these local activities, there are National and State Branch functions available to all members. Those who are not yet members of the Association are urged to consider joining now. The first event for 2010 was a visit and private guided tour, led by Lesley Falloon OAM, to Black Rock House on 10th March. This famous old home, on the Register of the National Estate, was built by Charles Ebden in 1856, with the future suburb of Black Rock taking its name. Charles Ebden, early Port Phillip pastoralist, businessman and parliamentarian was Victoria s first Auditor-General. The special function to welcome new 2010 Honours awardees will be held on 15th August. On 15th September a beachside walk will be held to the Marine Education Centre, centred around the Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary, with a guided tour by Ray Lewis OAM, President of Marine Care Rickets Point Inc. Other events being planned include a special tour of the Melbourne Town Hall and a recital on the famous Town Hall organ, hosted by noted musician member David Johnston OAM. The AGM will be held in October and the Annual Dinner in November. The Group is currently exploring the feasibility of sponsoring an interschool debating competition within local schools, with the final to be held in one of the local Council Chambers. Central Highlands Following the second AGM for 2009 held on 15th November the retiring officers Bill Pryor, Chairman, Jan Allitt, Secretary and Richard Bayley, Treasurer were re-appointed for a further term as were also the other Committee members. The thirteenth Annual Luncheon is to be held at Creswick on 18th April with guest speaker Mrs Christina Hindhaugh, author and farmer. The luncheon will be preceded by a church service at St. Mathes Anglican Church in Wendouree. Further action to record the history of the Group members has continued with the Group now exploring the possibility of developing an interactive screen presentation at the Sovereign Hill Gold Museum. On the basis that the group continues to take special responsibility for the Grampians/Wimmera members, it is planned to hold a Spring function at Halls Gap this year to specifically involve them within their own region. Members will be encouraged to also involve their guests. 7 7 Mornington Peninsula Regional Group Annual Dinner and AGM: This was a successful Function attended by the Mayor, Shire Councillors and local Parliamentarians The Regional Group Committee enthusiastically received the Chairman s report on the Adelaide National Conference at its meeting on 26th February. There was great satisfaction that the role of Regional Groups in the promotion of membership had at last been recognised by the National Committee. Also, the comments by National President Dr Neil Conn AO, referring to the important role of Regional Groups in the future growth of the Association, and his wish that all Groups should take up the responsibilities of both membership and promotion, were all well received. This year, the congratulatory letters sent to the local new award recipients contained an Application Form for membership, and it is intended to follow up the award winners who have not renewed or never joined the Association, involving some forty five recipients. The Committee plans to hold seven meetings during the year, including a joint meeting on the 4th June with the State Branch Committee, which will be hosted by the Mayor of the Mornington Peninsula Shire at the Rosebud Shire headquarters. Other events include the welcome Cocktail Party for new members hosted by Dame Beryl Beaurepaire AC DBE; a joint commemoration of Anzac Day with RSL, Rotary, Legacy and the Shire at the Mount Eliza Memorial Garden; a Multi Faith Celebration of Community on 20th June in conjunction with the Shire, local religious groups, Schools, Chaplains and Service Groups; the Annual Schools Awards Program will culminate in a presentation Luncheon in August; the annual Dinner and AGM will be held in October; Remembrance Day will be recognised as for Anzac Day, with invitations to representatives from local Schools; and the Cruden Farm Picnic hosted by Dame Elisabeth Murdoch will be held in November as a joint effort with the State Branch. Barwon At the Annual General Meeting, the Chairman John Johnson announced with regret the retirement of Patricia Heath AM BEM, Professor Pip Hamilton AM and Anne Fuller OAM. Mrs Margaret Hughes OAM and the Reverend Cannon Barry Smith OAM were elected as new Committee members. The Committee is arranging two special events over the coming months with dates to be advised. The first will be a day at the movies in July at Neville Gaynor s theatre in Leopold and the second will be the Civic reception for new Award recipients hosted by the Mayor of the City of Greater Geelong.
