CITY

1. Former House, 58 Brougham Place, Corner of Brougham Place & O'Connell Street Of 2 storeys and built in white Tea Tree Gully stone in , this villa was built for brewer William Henry Beaglehole. He came to SA in 1849, and went to the Victorian goldfields before settling at Moonta where he built houses and kept a pub. After buying the Lion Brewery, he built this villa. He owned the Lion Brewery and other breweries at Oakbank and Broken Hill, was a director of several companies, and was MP for Wallaroo Brougham House Rest Home, 49 Brougham Place Built in 1879 to a design by Ernest H Bayer, in 1882 this single storey bluestone house was advertised as rental property to 'Medical Men'. This was an early indication that the medical fraternity were partial to the Brougham Place area. There are now many in the vicinity. 3. House, Lincoln College, 45 Brougham Place This large mansion with distinctive elaborate timber verandahs/ balconies was built in 1901 to a design by English & Soward, architects, for George Milne, important in the wine and spirit trade and a Member of Parliament. In 1951 the villa was bought by donation of the Epworth Book Company for use by Lincoln College and was the first of the residences to form the college. 4. House, Lincoln College, 39 Brougham Place This grand villa of sandstone with a fish scale tiled tower, is typical of the grand residence of the Edwardian period. It was built for AG Rymill in His son Arthur Campbell Rymill, who also lived here, was Lord Mayor of Adelaide in It became part of Lincoln College in the 1970s. 5. Semi-Detached Houses, Lincoln College, Brougham Place Built in 1897 as a semi-detached house for accountant Walter Edwin Dalton, who did so well in the Coolgardie Gold Mining venture that he had this property built for the well-to-do rental market. It became part of Lincoln College in It was originally graced by a verandah/balcony lost many years ago. 6. House, Lincoln College, 32 Brougham Place Although built in 1864, parts of this 2 storey Italianate residence may date from the 1850s when architect J Cummings lived here. In 1872 it was sold to Sir Richard Chaffey Baker, one time premier, who owned it till his death in Born in North Adelaide in 1842, he was called to the bar in London in 1864 and went on to be member of Federal Convention which framed the Australian Constitution. The property was purchased by Lincoln College in 1962 as student accommodation. 37

7. St Margaret's, 24 Brougham Place This large conspicuous mansion was built in 1889 for Arthur Waterhouse who inherited a small fortune from his father Thomas. As a prominent city businessman, Arthur owned several pubs, such as the Criterion in King William Street and the Griffins Head in Hindmarsh Square. Well known mansion designer, GK Soward, designed it in the Gothic style using Tapley Hill bluestone contrasted with high quality brick and terrracotta details. 8. Taylor House, 9 Brougham Place This eye-catching mansion was built in 1908 to a design by E Davies and C Rutt for WD Taylor, owner of the Lion Timber Mills. As a marvellous example of federation architecture, the house contains nationalistic leadlight windows, of Australian flora and fauna, and has high quality detailing. 9. House, 7 Brougham Place Built 1907 for merchant Charles Henry Goode and his wife Helen Augusta of the merchant firm of Goode Durrant & Co., this large house contributes to the essential character of similar properties lining the high side of Brougham Place. Please turn left into Lefevre Terrace and cross at the traffic lights, then turn back down to Stanley Street, walking along the northern side of the street. 10. Nurney House, Stanley Street Claimed as one of the most historic houses in Adelaide, the earliest part was built in 1846 for Captain Charles Bagot who discovered the Kapunda Copper Mine in The continuing association of the family with one residence is remarkable for his descendants still own the property. WH Bagot, who designed Bonython Hall, Convent of Mercy Chapel and the Barr Smith Library, created an Italian atrium in the 1920s which is individually recognised for its exceptional quality. 11. St Andrews, Stanley Street Dominating Stanley Street as one of the most impressively located mansions in Adelaide, it was designed by James MacGeorge as his own home in The western wing was added in 1881 when David Murray, successful merchant, lived here. CRJ Glover, first Lord Mayor of Adelaide, lived here. His son Sir John, who also became Lord Mayor between , also lived here. 12. House, 178 Stanley Street Architects of this splendid residence were Cumming & Davies. It was built during the speculative building boom of the early 1880s for George F Fulton who arrived in SA He is notable for his Fultons Foundry where iron fencing, verandah decorations and the like were cast. Employing 350, his Kilkenny factory covered 5 acres in

Please cross with care at the roundabout to the opposite corner of Jerningham and Stanley Streets. 13. House, 78 Jerningham Street It was built about 1845 as a two storey house in limestone for George H Barnard and an 1870 photo shows a verandah that covered both frontages on the ground floor. In the 1880s the Weger family lived in this house and rented out their cottage, in which a murder/suicide took place on 12 June Lizzie Lines and her lover Maurice O'Connor, who fled from Burra, were shot by Lizzie's husband, Albert, who then turned the gun on himself. In recent times Henry Krips, popular conductor of SA Symphony Orchestra, lived here between Semi-Detached Cottages, Stanley Street German migrant Frederick Spanhake, a policeman, bought three allotments in 1848 for 30 and built a six room house, bakehouse and stables. This became three cottages by Like the property at 53 Stanley Street, the building is a prominent feature of the streetscape because of its location right on the footpath. 15. Row Houses, Stanley Street Philanthropy also saw these cottages being built, in this instance on behalf of the Adelaide Benevolent Strangers' Friend Society, which is the oldest charity in SA. Women with children who were widows or those deserted, were usually the recipients of these cottages. An appeal was held to build this row in 1906 and it was designed by Alfred Wells. 16. Row Houses, Stanley Street, and Kingston Street These former Almshouses were built for widows, aged and the infirm between by 'benevolent citizens of Adelaide' who came together for the project. Built in stages, the complex has frontages to Stanley Street and Kingston Terrace. 17. Cottage, 57 Stanley Street Built as two adjoining cottages about 1852 by Diedrich Kretschmer, this cottage was renovated some years ago by its owner with much respect to its age and character. In common with other cottages in the Chichester Gardens Estate Subdivision it is popular with visitors and promotions as a distinctive part of the City. 18. Cottage, 53 Stanley Street This rendered cottage was built by James Wright prior to Its location directly on the footpath gives the dwelling dramatic prominence in the streetscape, its early date evident by the low roof and small casement windows. Having an 'M' shaped roof, the cottage extends back deeply into the lot. 39

19. Kentish Arms Hotel, 23 7 Stanley Street Established Christmas 1848 by John C Cocker, the pub was owned by his family until He founded the Kent & Sussex Cricket Club and arranged for the playing of regular matches on the Park Lands beside Mann Terrace. He was entrusted with preparation of the first wicket at the Adelaide Oval in When the hotel was rebuilt in 188l, Hamilton & Campbell designed one that looked like no other in the city, with its stunning colonnade to the first floor. Turn right into East Pallant Street. 20. Former Shop, 30 East Pallant, corner Mann Street Many early subdivisions of Town Acres saw village type communities develop in which shops, pubs and dwellings could be found side by side. This attractive early 1855 shop was built for the local publican, John C Cocker, who owned the nearby Kentish Arms. Turn to the right and walk down Sussex Street. 21. Semi-Detached cottages, Sussex Street On a raised foundation, the semi-detached rendered cottages were built in the 1850s as four row cottages for Gottfried Rieger and were owned by his family until Built on two lots of the original Chichester Gardens subdivision, the land was bought for Semi-Detached Cottages, A Sussex Street This stone built rendered property which still has its early slate roof cladding, retains its original external appearance and makes a positive contribution to Sussex Street. 23. Cottage, 120 Sussex Street The site of this distinctive building was bought in 1851 for 15. It was originally built as two cottages by Andreas Borchard, a German basket maker. The external loft door in the gable is a common feature in early German houses. Under its recent tile roof is an iron roof, and under that are timber shingles. 24. Cottage, 122 Sussex Street Although this cottage with brick parapet is a little later than its neighbours, being built about 1871, it fits in well with the existing cottages and makes a positive contribution to the streetscape. 25. House, Sussex Street This delightful two storey house of local limestone is unusually set back from the street. It is one of the earliest houses in North Adelaide and the first part was built before 1842 for George H Barnard. The two storey part seen from the street was built between

Governor Grey's secretary, William Littlejohn, lived here for a while. In the Chichester Gardens subdivision were several communal wells and one of them is hidden at the rear of the driveway to this house. 26. Shop, Jerningham Street, at the corner of Sussex Street Believed to have been built in the mid 1840s as two single fronted labourers' cottages, but now much altered, the building's character enhances the streetscape in this part of Jerningham Street. Turn left into Jerningham Street and walk to the traffic lights at the corner of Melbourne Street. 27. Former Baker's Shop,The Store Cafe, 157 Melbourne Street A striking corner building complementing the hotel opposite, the former shop was built for baker, J Schmidt, in 1894 using finely finished sandstone and brick quoining. For many years the ANZ bank traded here but the building is now an eatery on one of the most popular corners in North Adelaide. Cross at the traffic lights to the opposite corner. 28. Lion Hotel and former Malt House, corner of Melbourne & Jerningham Street The Lion brewery and malthouse, which were built before the hotel, were designed by D Garlick in Extensive cellars were added a year later. The hotel was built in 1881 to a design by James Cumming. When the brewery ceased to operate in 1914, aerated waters and cordials were still made on site. In the early 1980s wine buffs with private wine collections could hire cellar space. Walk northwards up Jerningham Street back to Stanley Street and turn left walking along the southern side of the street. 29. House, Stanley Street Designed by R Rees in 1878 for newspaper editor John H Finlayson of the SA Register, the house was built as Strelda and presents itself to Stanley Street as being only one storey. At the rear, a magnificent segmented bay and balcony affords fabulous views across the Torrens Valley, to the City and the Adelaide Hills. 30. Sunnyside, 229 Stanley Street This Georgian style mansion, designed in 1936 by F Kenneth Milne, won an award of merit of the SA Institute of Architects in 1944 for best domestic architecture of the period. Milne was an influential architect noted for the Adelaide Hills property, Arbury Park, the scoreboard at Adelaide Oval and the Hampshire Hotel in Grote Street. He became well known for his use of the Georgian style. 41

31. Semi-Detached Houses, Stanley Street These semi-detached houses with their continuous verandahs are the grandest of this prominent group of eleven dwellings between New Street and the church. They were built in 1874 by William Pope. Note: after 261 Stanley Street the next house in the street going towards the former Congregational Church is 228 Brougham Place and the numbering system then reverses. 32. House, 225 Brougham Place This house of Georgian appearance is the earliest in this distinctive group of North Adelaide dwellings. Dating from about the early 1870s, its age is demonstrated by the use of slate roof and local limestone. 33. House, 222 Brougham Place This house was built for John Bastin who was a commercial traveller and lived in SA between Built into the side of the Torrens Valley embankment, the two storey form can only be seen from the rear. The cast iron decoration to fencing and to the front of the house is Adelaide lace at its finest. 34. Houses, 218, 215, 213 Brougham Place The three houses on the walk to the former Congregational Church form an important part of the streetscape in this precinct and demonstrate the development of housing in North Adelaide. 35. Former Congregational Church, Brougham Place One of the most prominent townscape features of Adelaide, the church was once described as a 'resort for enquiring minds'. The Classical style church, which was designed by E Wright and E Hamilton in 1860 as a result of a design competition, is one of the most substantial buildings erected in SA as a place of worship for a non-conformist denomination. Opened in February 1861, it was another 10 years before the 107 ft tower was added. The walk ends here. You may return to the start at the corner of Brougham Place and O'Connell Street by crossing Brougham Gardens, taking care to cross at the traffic lights at Lefevre Terrace or Melbourne Street. 42
