1 A DONOR-SUPPORTED PUBLIC PARK 21st Century Parks, INC ANNUAL REPORT TheParklands.org It s time for LOUISVILle to come outside and play.

2 Chairman s Letter Dear Friends and Supporters, It s been another exciting year for 21st Century Parks and The Parklands of, and in many ways, it has been our most transformational year. Our achievements this year would not have been possible without your continued support, and I wanted to share with you what you helped to make a reality: Thanks to the dedicated members of the 21st Century Parks Steering Committee and the generosity of the community, 21st Century Parks raised over $122,000,000, exceeding our $120 million goal! Over 600 donors contributed--including 480 individuals, 76 corporations, and 42 foundations --thank you again! In February, we opened the PNC Achievement Center for Education and Interpretation and launched the Outdoor Classroom. To date, nearly 3000 children have engaged in dynamic experiences at The Parklands through field trips, camps, and other educational events. The Gheens Foundation Lodge and the PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP Pavilion opened, and since opening, over 220 events have been held at these locations, including our first running race. We broke ground on the fourth and final phase of The Parklands of on July 3, This final section includes work on The Strand, Turkey Run Park and Broad Run Park, all set to open in A nearly $35 million investment in infrastructure and amenities will result in more than 2,400 acres of new donor-supported public parks, making it the largest park development project in Louisville since the original Olmsted park and parkway system was developed in the late 1800s. September 6, 2013 we opened the remainder of Beckley Creek Park, including the Egg Lawn and Humana Grand Allee and also celebrated the opening of Pope Lick Park. Opening weekend was packed with over 30,000 visitors who attended many events, including a balloon glow and musical performance, mountain biking, educational hikes, photography and art classes. We launched a membership program to support annual operations. We exceeded our 2013 goal of 1,000 members and are working toward 3,000 members in Our natural areas team has cleared almost 923 acres of invasive species and planted nearly 55,000 trees and shrubs since 2010, restoring and enhancing the natural beauty of this amazing place. In October of 2013 The Parklands saw its one millionth visit since opening the first amenity in the summer of The photos on the following pages will provide a sense of what a million visits looks like. It is a privilege to be your choice for these activities. I hope to see you at The Parklands soon and look forward to sharing with you new updates and adventures at The Parklands in Please don t hesitate to contact us if you have questions, concerns, or comments. 4 Report on Natural Areas Restoration To preserve parkland for the entire community is core to the mission of 21st Century Parks, and this value is never more evident than in the steps that are taken in the restoration and preservation of the nearly 4,000 acres of public parkland within The Parklands of. Each year, The Parklands team works with the community to ensure that the land and the environment is sustained and enhanced for future generations. In 2013, over 12,000 trees were planted in The Parklands and nearly 500 acres were treated for the removal of invasive species. The Parklands team was able to accomplish such an enormous task with the contributions from individuals, corporations, organizations, and foundations throughout the community. The Wells Fargo Foundation s $100,000 grant, funded through their Clean Technology and Innovation Grant Program, allowed The Parklands of team to treat 142 acres of forests that had been overtaken by invasive plants. The removal of invasive species will allow Kentucky plants and wildflowers to germinate and thrive, providing habitat for native wildlife and thereby increasing our region s biodiversity and ecological health. Now that these Kentucky hardwood forest systems are restored, we are able to let nature s natural process take its course in returning our native plant and animal communities to these once severely damaged, impaired forests. In addition, a $25,000 Environmental Quality Incentives Program grant from the Kentucky Natural Resources Conservation Service allowed us to continue the treatment of invasive species on over 100 acres of parkland. Over 4,000 volunteer hours were shared with The Parklands of in 2013, many of which were spent with The Parklands team in various environmental projects. Whayne Supply Company celebrated their 100 year anniversary by sponsoring a planting of over 100 trees in Beckley Creek Park. Thanks to each of our Parklands Founding Members, the team of dedicated volunteers, and the generosity of the companies and foundations to our annual fund, for allowing The Parklands team to work towards our mission, and continue to plant for the future.

5 Management s Report Parks grow and shape cities over time and 2013 was a year of significant growth and celebration for The Parklands. We grew the team providing safe, clean, fun and beautiful parks by 33% or 10 people, we grew the impact of The Parklands to the community by hosting over 800,000 park visits during 2013 and we grew our newly planted membership program to 1,169 individuals and household members. Most significantly, we kept up the continued growth of construction on the next phase by making good progress towards our 2015 opening of the entire Parklands system Highlights 800,000+ Visits Over 1,500 acres open to the public 1,169 new members 3,300 learners through Outdoor Classroom field trips 27,000 Welcome Center visits No annual operating support from the City or State $15.5 million in support: Construction management - in-kind 5% Program fees 2% Annual fundraising 16% We are working every day for you, our park visitor. The team s efforts focus on our innovative park model: a donor-supported public park. The foundation of this new public/private partnership is built on knowledge and cooperation. We will continue to train the team, engage park visitors, and communicate with the public how The Parklands offers and fills the community s need for new public park space. Every resource we have derives from generous support to the organization. We thank each and every donor for their engagement and will carefully steward their trust and generous support. In 2014 we will continue to grow the impact of this donorsupported public park. We expect that 1,000,000+ visitors and 3,000+ members will achieve their individual goals during 2014 in the park with an appreciation for the great design and celebration of the beauty and diversity of The Parklands of. Programming 13% $17.4 million in costs: Construction management - in-kind 4% Capital funding 77% Management and general 5% Fundraising 0% Construction activities 78% Thank you, Jim Moore Chief Operating Officer NOW STREAMING LIVE. *The excess 2013 costs over support was the result of a drawdown of prior year capital campaign reserves.
