4 LEADER TERRE JOHNSON Terre Johnson serves as Minister of Music at Vestavia Hills Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama and as Associate Conductor for MidAmerica Productions in New York, for whom he conducts rehearsals with choirs in universities, high schools and churches all over the country in preparation for performances under the direction of John Rutter. He is also the founder and music director of the Southeastern Chamber Orchestra, and is at home with both the choral and orchestral repertoires. His Carnegie Hall debut in 1996 met with critical success, the music having been splendidly presented, according to Bill Zakariasen in The Westsider. Recent performances have included regular invitations to conduct the New England Symphonic Ensemble in New York s Carnegie Hall, Haydn s Creation in the Rome Easter Festival, and the Voices in the House Festival in the Sydney Opera House. An accomplished accompanist, Dr. Johnson has served as rehearsal assistant and accompanist to many of the best-known choral conductors, including Colleen Kirk, Harold Decker, and Robert Shaw. MESSAGE FROM TERRE The Shanghai World Expo will offer the people of all nations the chance to celebrate the potential of our global society. The greatest expressions of hope for the future always come from the artists within a generation, and the musicians who perform at the World Expo in 2010 have an unprecedented opportunity to offer a context of beauty within which the world can strengthen the economic and societal ties between peoples and countries. 5 LEADER REPERTOIRE Walt Whitman s poem When Lilacs Last in the Door-yard Bloom d was written to give voice to the great national mourning following the devastation of the Civil War and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Paul Hindemith s musical setting of the poem was the product of one of the 20th Century s greatest musical minds, a German immigrant who had recently come to America to escape the Nazi regime, and who had been asked by Robert Shaw to commemorate the death of Roosevelt. It provides a vivid opportunity for singers of a generation whose lives are marked by both limitless potential and frightening uncertainty to express their greatest hopes, while honoring two of the greatest leaders of the past. 3 WORLD EXPO 2010

6 DESTINATION Beijing Xi an Shanghai Hangzhou China has a proud history of civilization spanning more than 5,000 years. In 1973 President Nixon visited China, marking its most recent opening to the West. Since that time China has been transformed and as a result is now transforming the world. There is so much ancient and recent history to be seen by visitors. There is a living and contemporary history to be experienced and savored through cultural exchange opportunities. There is also a vision of the future on display especially in Shanghai, an emerging and dazzling giant of a city. Shanghai was awarded the right to host the prestigious World Expo in part because of its growing reputation as one of the greatest of all cities. The Expo will be a monumental showcase of China s history and place in the world while it follows the tradition of the Silk Route traders by bringing the world together. Over 200 nations will be featured under the theme of Better City, Better Life, presenting their best to the expected 70 million visitors. China is a hospitable, awe inspiring and safe destination. China is a mysterious, highly cultured and dazzling country. Tuesday, June 8 Arrive in Beijing to be greeted by KI s friendly representatives Be entranced by your first look at Beijing, China s capital for 3,000 years. Home to over 16 million people, Beijing is China s second-largest city and the heart of the nation s government, economy, and culture Check into our hotel Dinner (daily) Overnight in Beijing Wednesday, June 9 Breakfast (daily) Today we drive to the 2,600 year old Great Wall Upon arrival we have the option to set up for an informal performance at the square that forms a base of this breathtaking structure Lunch (daily) The Wall extends 3,465 miles across Northern China and this is our chance to climb as much of it as we can Tonight we experience a performance by famed Chinese acrobats Overnight in Beijing Thursday, June 10 We start our explorations with a visit to the world s largest plaza, Tian Anmen Square, which covers 100 acres. This square is lined with imposing public buildings, fronting the legendary and once exclusive Forbidden City. The Forbidden City comprises 250 acres of courtyards, gardens, splendid 15th century halls and pavilions graced with imperial treasures which now form the Palace Museum. 8 PROGRAM Friday, June 11 We tour the Temple of Heaven, which is probably one of the most photographed buildings in the world. Built in 1420 and restored in 1890, the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is one of several structures that we see on our tour this morning We arrive at the venue for our first combined rehearsal with other participating ensembles Welcome Dinner for all participants Overnight in Beijing Saturday, June 12 The Summer Palace or Yiheyuan was built in It is mainly dominated by Longevity Hill (60 meters high) and the Kunming Lake. It covers an expanse of 2.9 square kilometers, three quarters of which is water. The central Kunming Lake, covering 2.2 square kilometers, was entirely manmade and the excavated soil was used to build Longevity Hill. In its compact 70,000 square meters of building space, one finds a variety of palaces, gardens, and other classical-style architectural structures. We arrive at the venue for our second combined rehearsal Sunday, June 13 We fly to Shanghai, China s largest and most cosmopolitan city, making it the ideal host city for the 2010 World Expo We travel along the Bund and the tree-lined avenue bordering the Huangpu River and from here see the dazzling modernity of new Shanghai on one side of the river while we pass historical Shanghai on the other Check in to hotel Overnight in Shanghai Monday, June 14 We visit the Temple of the Jade Buddha to witness this renowned seated statue made of white jade and brought to China in 1869 Arrive for the dress rehearsal Festival Performance at the Oriental Art Centre (tbd) Overnight in Shanghai WORLD EXPO

Visit the national pavilions, witness cutting edge technology, experience the Better City, Better Life habitat, enjoy the entertainment and mingle with people from around the globe Prepare for your Expo performance Perform for the World Expo audience Overnight in Shanghai Wednesday, June 16 Depart for home or extension tour EXTENSION TOUR OPTION 1: HANGZHOU Wednesday, June 16 Breakfast We then travel by coach to Hangzhou, called by Marco Polo the City of Heaven. The city has become one of the most popular tourist destinations for wealthy Chinese citizens because of its stunning beauty and its situation on the exquisite West Lake (Xi Hu). It also marks the southern terminus of the 1,000 mile long Grand Canal of China Check in Dinner Overnight in Hangzhou. Thursday, June 17 Breakfast Today we enjoy touring picturesque Hangzhou. The city boasts beautiful gardens and parks lining the shore and several outstanding temples, including the Yuefei Mu and the Lingyin Si (one of China s largest and most famous) This evening we enjoy dinner at a local restaurant before returning to the hotel Overnight in Hangzhou Friday, June 18 Transfer to the airport to board our flight home, our hearts filled with rich memories of the hospitable Chinese people and of our once-in-a-lifetime musical experience in China WORLD EXPO 2010

10 PROGRAM EXTENSION TOUR OPTION 2: XI AN Wednesday, June 16 Transfer to the airport and fly to the imperial city of Xi an Tour the ancient old city gate and wall as well as the 15 story Wild Goose Pagoda built in 652 A.D. Thursday, June 17 Visit one of the world s great discoveries; 6,000 life-size terra-cotta soldiers with individual facial expressions. They were recently discovered buried with their horses, guarding the tomb of 3rd century B.C. Emperor Qin Shi Buangdi. Enjoy a dumpling dinner at a local restaurant prior to witnessing the spectacular and highly entertaining Tang Dynasty Show that Xi an is famous for. Friday, June 18 Transfer to the airport to board our flight home, our hearts filled with rich memories of the hospitable Chinese people and of our once in a lifetime musical experience in China WORLD EXPO

Mr. Knapp is Artistic Director and Conductor of the New Jersey Choral Society & Orchestra which he has led to critical acclaim both in the U.S. and abroad; Artistic Director and Conductor of the Connecticut Choral Society & Orchestra; Music Director for the Mark Thallander Foundation; founder and Music Director of Orchestra de Camerata and Artistic Director of Chamber Music at the Salisbury House Iowa. He is Principal Conductor of the American Festival Symphony at Carnegie Hall and Artistic Advisor to Kingsway International for choral and orchestral programming.
