With the rapidly growing strength of the Centre, we are hopeful that we will be able to diversify our activities in many areas to fulfil the needs of the entrepreneurs. In this issue, we are pleased to feature ITCO 2015, a colloquium on IT Sector in Odisha The Way Forward held in Bhubaneswar on March 5. The event discussed the prospects of the development of software industry in the State and shared knowledge to strengthen this sector with appropriate measures. A Workshop on Make in India Role of MSMEs organised at Bhubaneswar on March 23 highlighted the emerging manufacturing potentials in the State and the key role of the policy makers in driving the MSME growth in the State. As you may be aware, there are 331 WTCs across the globe in 92 countries. We, in the WTCA network, believe in working through mutual cooperation and reciprocity. Therefore, to promote our shared understanding we are adding to this newsletter a new section which will feature one global WTC at a time. We shall try to bring you as much information as possible about the WTCs, their activities and services and about the economic potentials of the region they serve. We feel this will help you gain wider knowledge about the markets to explore business prospects in the near future. The Know your Entrepreneur section intends to motivate aspiring entrepreneurs in the state of Odisha to venture into trade and business activities with greater zeal and confidence. I hope with your association and involvement, we can reach out to the stakeholders of trade and business in the State with greater success. I sincerely thank the members of trade and industry of the state of Odisha for giving us their valuable support, time and again, in steering our activities. 2 ITCO 2015 ITCO 2015, a colloquium on IT Sector in Odisha The Way Forward was organised by World Trade Centre Bhubaneswar in association with IT Association of Odisha (ITAO) on 5thMarch The colloquium was organized with an objective of getting together experts from the sector to speak to the industry on the way forward they should be looking at and how they could explore the latest and non-conventional utilities of Information Technology. Also since very recently in 2014 the state government of Odisha has come out with an ICT policy the colloquium also aimed at bringing out the highlights of the policy making the industry more aware of the offerings of the policy to be benefitted from. The key speakers in this discussion forum were Mr. Rajiv Vaishnav, Vice President, NASSCOM, Mumbai, Mr.Tu,Fu-Han, Director, TAITRA, Kolkata, Col (Retd) A.K.Nath, Executive Director, C-DAC Kolkata Centre, Government of India, Mr.Brahmananda Rath, Sr. Consultant, SeMT, Department of IT, Government of Odisha, Mr.Arun Dey, President, IT Association of Odisha. Mr. R.N. Palai, I.T.S. Special Secretary Department of Information & Technology, Government of Odisha while emphasising on the growing prospects of the ESDM sector in the State of Odisha, urged the MSME units in the IT sector to come forward and take up manufacturing activities ensuring all the required support from the government. This he spoke while delivering the inaugural address at the ITCO 2015.Mr.Palai spoke about the upcoming info valley project and the various other efforts being taken by the Government not only to support the software industry but also to develop the ESDM sector in the State. 3 Workshop on Make in India - Role of MSMEs World Trade Centre Bhubaneswar in association with the Department of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises, Government of Odisha, National Institute of MSME, Government of India and State Bank of India organized a workshop on Make in India Role of MSMEs on 23rd March Mr.MadhavLal, I.A.S, Secretary, Ministry of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises Government of India graced the workshop as Chief Guest along with Mr.Gokul Chandra Pati, I.A.S Chief Secretary and Chief Development Commissioner, Government of Odisha and Mr.RavindraNath, CMD, National Small Scale Industries Cooperation as the Guests of Honour. The state of Odisha needs to work towards creating the infrastructure for multiproduct clusters in the rural sectors to strengthen the rural economies. 6 Cultural Highlight 11th Dhauli Kalinga Mahotsav 11th Dhauli Kalinga Mahotsav was held from 6th to 8th February, 2015 at the foothills of Dhauli, Shanti Vihar, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The Mahotsav was jointly organized by Odisha Tourism Development Corporation and Odisha Dance Academy. The three day cultural festival offers a whole range of performing arts including classical and folk art forms. This annual festival is organized with an aim to preserve, promote and popularize our heritage at the national and international level. A dance medley comprising Naga Nata, Prahalada Natak, Gotipua dance, Bajasal, Mayurbhan Chhau, Sambalpuri dance and Ghanta Mridanga representing the folk culture of various regions of Odisha, Kathak dance by Aditi Mangaldas from Drishtikon Dance Foundation, New Delhi followed by the last presentation of the evening Kamsale, the martial folk art of Karnataka delighted the audience on the day of inauguration of the festival. His Excellency Dr. S. C. Jamir, Governor of Odisha, Shri Ashok Ch. Panda, Hon'ble Minister, Tourism & Culture, Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee, Commissioner-cum- Secretary, Tourism & Culture, Shri A. K. Tarenia, Director Tourism and Guru Aruna Mohanty, Secretary, Odisha Dance Academy graced the occasion on this day. On 7th February the students of Odisha Dance Academy presented an excellent piece of Gotipua dance form representing the Bandha Nrutya and the historic background of Dhauli. A presentation by the artistes of Srjan on devotional theme followed by a martial dance of South East Asia by Rianto & Group concluded the evening. Shri Lalit Mansingh, Former Ambassador to USA & President Orissa Dance Academy, Shri Susil Kumar Das, Director Culture and Shri Krishna MohanTrivedi, Chief General Manager, State Bank of India and Guru Aruna Mohanty, Secretary, Odisha Dance Academy graced the occasion on this day. The concluding day, on 8th February, began with an award presentation of Ruchi Buddha Samman award to Padma Bibhusana Shilpaguru Ragunath Mahapatra for his outstanding contribution in the field of art. The award was presented by the Director of Ruchi Masala Shri Arabinda Sahoo. This was followed by performances in Indian classical dances including Kathak, Manipuri and Kathakali and Odissi dance by Aditi Mangaldas & Group, Priti Patel & Group, Sadanam Balakrishnan & Group and Aruna Mohanty & Group respectively. Mayurbhanj Chhau dance by the artists of Mayur Art Centre, Bhubaneswar with a theme on Kalinga War was presented as the last performance of the three day festival. 7 Know the Entrepreneur Going beyond the Conventional Ways This is the story of Ramesh Mahapatra, from a well-educated, middle class family. His story showcases the success of a person who could dare to give up the conventional ways of earning a living t take up entrepreneurship. Giving up a secure employment with the state government, Mr.Mahapatra chose to set up a fishing net plant in the year The thrill, the excitement and the satisfaction he experienced when the unit went into production and marketing provided him the impetus of grounding one project after another, and today he stands at the helm of several units. The Magnum group of companies which he heads today has clocked turnover of Rs. 350 crores this fiscal, with seven group companies. Responsible for starting the various companies of Magnum Group, Shri Ramesh Mahapatra, is a first generation entrepreneur. Initially he started with a fishing net plant and a consultancy firm. Under his leadership MAGNUM grew rapidly. Today he is recognized in the state as a leading entrepreneur in the MSME sector. Coming from a well-educated middle class family Mr. Mahapatra is the son of Late Deenabandhu Mahapatra. Mr. Mahapatra qualified in B.Sc in Chemical Engineering from Bihar Institute of Technology (Ranchi University). He started his career with Rallis India limited and worked in IPICOL- Industrial promotion & Investment Corporation of Odisha Ltd. between 1975 and 1978 in various capacities. When he had almost decided to leave IPICOL and join MBA study program an opportunity for entrepreneurship knocked through Mr. M.K. Ramdas, who hailed from Kerala and was a great motivator, entrepreneur and philanthropist. Mr. Ramdas saw an entrepreneurial streak in him and persuaded him to start a project of his own. He left IPICOL and joined Mr. Ramdas till 1982 after which he joined the entrepreneurial brand wagon to start virtually the first fishing net manufacturing plant in eastern India in The thrill, the excitement and the satisfaction he experienced when the unit went into production and marketing, provided him the impetus of grounding one project after another, and today he stands at the helm of several units. It is heading towards becoming one of the strongest groups in the development of aquaculture in Odisha and West Bengal. Under his chairmanship, Magnum is effectively present in the region to take care of the requirements of shrimps and fish farmers. The other companies in the group are Magnum Estates ltd., Magnum polymers ltd., Magnum fibers Pvt. Ltd., Magnum dream homes Pvt. Ltd., Magnum Telesoft Pvt. Ltd. and Magnum Concretes Pvt. Ltd. To succeed in an enterprise one needs to foster team work and also know how to take advantage of the right opportunities. Mr. Mahaptra believes that an entrepreneur should be prepared for administrative and regulatory hurdles and delays in various government clearances and to be a successful entrepreneur one must have a dream, a passion and determination to succeed. Every business/industry has its setbacks. To come over these setbacks and to proceed with optimism is entrepreneurship. Dr. (Mrs.) Geeta Mahapatra, wife of Mr. Mahapatra, actively supports him in his enterprise. Mr. Mahapatra is an active member in several organizations, which works towards the development of industries in Odisha. He has also been elected as the president of industrial entrepreneur association of Bhubaneswar, Odisha and the president of Sea food association of Odisha.
