2 Welcome Sheffield to Dapo Adaramewa Hello and welcome to Sheffield Hallam Students Union. As a student of Sheffield Hallam University you automatically become a member of the Students Union meaning you have access to all of our services, activities and events over the summer and beyond! Sheffield Hallam Students Union is led by me, Dapo Adaramewa, President of the Students Union and a team of four Student Officers. We are students too so we understand what you want from your time at university. Come along and say hello to me and the Student Officer Team at the Sheffield Hallam Students Union building, The HUBS, it s one of the most iconic buildings in the city so make sure you get some good photos whilst you are here! We have a great café and bar for you to meet friends, grab some good food and have fun. Why not challenge your friends to a game of pool while you re down. 3 TRIPS AROUND THE UK York Minster Organised by Sheffield Hallam Students Union, these trips are a great way to visit some of the best sights and cities in the UK. Coaches for each trip will leave the Students Union building, The HUBS, at 8am and leave the destination at 6pm. Tickets can be purchased from the Owen Building, room 221, 222 and 223 on the 8th June, 11am-4pm. York Saturday 13 June, 10 Very popular with local and international tourists, York is one of the most historic cities in the UK. Among its many attractions are the famous castle and minster. This trip includes free entry to the National Railway Museum, which contains a collection of over 100 trains from the last century. Manchester Saturday 20 June, 21 Join us for a trip to Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United, the biggest football club in the world. Imagine yourself as Ryan Giggs in the dugout of the stadium, visit the trophy room and sit by the peg of your favourite player in the dressing room. We will then move on to the Trafford Centre, which is one of the largest shopping centres in the UK. It has a wide range of shops and entertainment facilities. Old Trafford Whitby Beach Whitby Saturday 27 June & 29 August, 10 Whitby is a small seaside town in the north-east of England which is the home of Dracula. This was a very popular trip last year we took ten full coaches! They say that Britain s most famous dish of fish and chips tastes best when you can see the sea. Whitby is one of the best places to do this. Blackpool Saturday 4 July, 10 Blackpool is a popular seaside resort in north-west England, well known for its piers, trams, donkey rides and the Pleasure Beach one of the most visited amusement parks in the UK. Other major attractions include Blackpool Tower and the Winter Gardens. Liverpool Saturday 11 July, 10 Liverpool is a glorious World Heritage city with plenty of historical and cultural visitor attractions. Home of the Beatles as well as two world-renowned football teams, it s a city with two majestically different cathedrals.
4 Cambridge Saturday 18 July, 15 Cambridge is a university city of old streets, ancient colleges and lovely bridges spanning the River Cam. The best way to travel down the river is by punting. There are historic and contemporary buildings to visit, worldrenowned museums, fantastic theatres and live music. Leeds Saturday 25 July, 10 Leeds is a cosmopolitan city in West Yorkshire with loads going on. You will get to explore the city s vibrant shops. You will also have the opportunity to visit the city s wide array of museums and galleries. Cheshire Oaks Shopping Centre Saturday 1 August, 10 Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet is the UK s largest outlet centre, with 145 stores. Explore and browse the wide range of designer goods at a discounted price. And if you need a break from the shopping, Cheshire Oaks even has its own aquarium. Newcastle Saturday 8 August, 10 A trip to one of the most famous northern cities in the UK, celebrated for its diversity in people, things to do and places to explore. These include the Angel of the North, the Millennium Bridge the first and only tilting bridge in the world plus The Sage Gateshead and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. Bicester Saturday 15 August, 20 Cambridge Bicester Shopping Village is a luxury shopping area near Oxford which sells designer fashion at reduced prices. There are a wide range of shops, including Armani, DKNY, Dior, Gucci, Prada and many more. Oxford Saturday 22 August, 20 Oxford is renowned for its medieval university and is known as the city of dreaming spires, which refers to the beautiful architecture of the university buildings. There are plenty of shops, museums and gardens to explore along with the largest single room devoted to book sales in all of Europe. Scarborough Saturday 30 August, 10 Scarborough is a seaside resort with a rich history. It has glorious beaches and loads to do and see. You will have the opportunity to visit the towns various beaches, museums and galleries. Bath Saturday 5 September, 20 The city s museums, theatres and other cultural and sporting venues have made Bath a major centre for tourism. The City has a lively cultural scene with several festivals, concerts and exhibitions throughout the year. All trips are subject to change. The event features over eighty stalls of local traders and crafts people. Walk to Weston Park Museum* Sunday 7 June, 10am 2pm Meet at main entrance, City Campus Visit the largest museum in Sheffield, the award-winning Weston Park Museum. With interesting exhibits about Sheffield life and culture, you are guaranteed to learn something new. The walk will be approximately 30 minutes and entry to the museum is free. Walk to the Botanical Gardens* Sunday 14 June and Sunday 12 July, 10am 2pm A 30-minute walk to the beautiful Botanical Gardens near our Collegiate Campus with free time to explore the 18 acre gardens. What is Sheffield Culture?* Wednesday 17 June, 1pm 2.30pm Stoddart 7138, City Campus A light-hearted look at Sheffield culture, customs and slang. Find out the best places to visit in the city and students will be available to answer your questions. Weston Park Museum ICE Club Xtra The Pizza Game* Thursday 18 June, 1pm 3pm Owen 1037, City Campus Play the pizza game a fun business simulation to test your business acumen and practise your planning and organisational skills numeracy skills team working and decision making skills. Walk to Heeley City Farm* Sunday 21 June and Sunday 16 August, 10am 2pm Join us on a short walk to Heeley City Farm, a friendly farm with an environmental visitor centre in Heeley, in the heart of Sheffield.
7 Walk to the Peak District* Sunday 28 June, 9.30am 2pm Peak Lecture Theatre, Level 5 Owen Building, City Campus Come and find out why Sheffield is the greenest city in Europe as one of our British students leads a walk to the edge of the Peak District. Please wear comfortable shoes and waterproof clothes, and bring a picnic. Ice Skating* Wednesday 1 July, Wednesday 15 July, and Wednesday 6 August 6pm 9pm Meet our student crew for a fun evening at Ice Sheffield. On Wednesday evenings students skate for 4 including skate hire with your Student card. We will take the tram there so please bring 4 for a return fare. ICE Club Xtra Decisions, Decisions* Thursday 2 July 12pm 2pm, and Thursday 13 August, 1pm-3pm Owen 1037, City Campus Play this interactive business simulation game to test your business acumen and practise your organisational, customer relationship, management and decision making skills The Peak District Cathedral tour* Friday 3 July, 1.30pm 3.30pm Ice Sheffield This is a tour behind the scenes of Sheffield Cathedral, one of the city s most historic and important buildings. Sky Ride* Sunday 5 July Join thousands of other cyclists as we take to the streets of Sheffield for a fantastic traffic free ride through the City. 8 Trip to Bakewell* Sunday 19 July, 10am 3pm We have organised a trip to the delightful market town of Bakewell famous for its pudding and streets. We will be taking the bus to Bakewell which is approximately 6 return, please pay on the day. Trip to Mayfield Alpaca Farm* Sunday 26 July, 11am 2pm Join us for a visit to the famous Mayfield Alpaca farm. You will get to meet the animals and see why they are unique. You will need to bring your Student ID card with you, admission to the farm is 3.50 and the bus fare is approximately 3. Mayfield Alpaca Farm Bishop s House Walk to Graves Park and Bishop s House* Sunday 23 August, 10am-2pm Join us for a trip to Graves Park, Sheffield s biggest park. There is plenty for you to visit and explore, including formal gardens, a rare breeds farm, ancient woodland, a cafe and more. We will take the bus there so please bring 4 for a return bus ticket. Sheffield Fayre* Sunday 30 August Monday 31 August Norfolk Heritage Park, Sheffield This major fayre returns in its thirteenth successful year and features historical re-enactments, crafts, market stalls, traditional fairground attractions and more.
9 Farewell event for our Summer School students* Thursday 10 September, 4.30pm-8pm Adsetts 6620, City Campus We will be hosting a celebration event exclusively for our Summer School students (TAR University College). Enjoy an evening celebrating the time you have spent here with free food and drink plus the opportunity to win Sheffield-themed prizes. Heritage Open Days at Various Venues in Sheffield* Thursday 10 September Sunday 13 September Heritage Open Days are a great opportunity to explore Sheffield and understand it s local history and heritage. For further information see heritageopendays.org.uk The Peak District Bakewell English Tea Party Fête Wednesday 17 June and Wednesday 12 August, 5.40pm Meet outside entrance to Owen building Homemade scones, jam and cream at the Megacentre. A team of students with red t-shirts will walk across with everyone. Walk in the Peaks Saturday July 18th, 11am Meet outside the entrance to Owen Building A team of people with red t-shirts will walk you to the Interchange then get the bus into the Peaks. 10 GET INVOLVED WITH YOUR STUDENTS UNION Summer Volunteering Opportunities Sheffield Hallam Students Union Volunteering Team is working with local charities to host a range of fantastic one-off volunteering opportunities over the summer. Get involved in activities like walking rescue dogs, helping at a community market, visiting local older people and planting vegetables at our very own grow site! Meet new people, experience Sheffield and support great community projects and charities. For more information visit hallamstudentsunion.org/volunteering Examples of volunteering projects at Sheffield Hallam Students Union Quotes from students who attended the Students Union organised trips last year I have been in a total of three trips and they were just fantastic, York, Cambridge and Whitby. 11 GET SPORTY Get sporty this summer with Hallam Active. Want to play sport and compete against other students? Sign up for the International Summer School Intramural league at City or Collegiate Hallam Active receptions. Block 1: 15th June to 17th July Block 2: 27th July to 28th August Price charged at 2 per student for turn up and play social sessions, and Badminton league, and a free t-shirt will be given to individuals who attend all 6 weeks! The football league will be charged at 20 per team per game, Basketball at 10 per team per game. NB. Exams are due to take place July. Sports at City will be cancelled during this week however all other activities will continue.
