Maple woodland complements large ponds connected by a tumbling stream and edged in hostas, irises and other damp-loving plants. There are collections of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and masses of old roses and other climbers twining through trees and over pergolas. Wandering paths lead to some surprises and garden seats take advantage of delightful vistas with distant views of the sea. We then visit SAJJ Garden the urban garden of Pas & Jim which showcases a sizeable assortment of bromeliads of all shapes, sizes and rarities tucked amongst a variety of mature palm trees and cyclads. Succulents, staghorn ferns, driftwood and airplants are also integrated into the garden. Our next visit is to Eden garden formed within the former Eden Quarry. Our day of garden visits is completed with a visit to the stunning Totara Waters garden a 2-acre subtropical garden set on the upper Waitemata Harbour. Own arrangements for dinner this evening.
2 Day 3, Sunday 20 October 2019 (B, D) Auckland Bay of Islands Departing Auckland we travel north and make our first stop near Coatesville to visit the private garden - A' La Fois. Here every attempt has been made to use the existing land form. Judicious plantings of natives and exotics have been chosen for their form and foliage to create pleasing and interesting vistas. (Note this property is currently for sale due to the owner s ill health if sold, the garden may not be available to visit.) We continue north stopping briefly to visit the Parry Kauri Park. Here we will view some fine examples of Giant Kauri Trees then visit the Matakohe Kauri Museum, at Otamatea. Here we gain an insight to the early New Zealand pioneer history, which helped form the New Zealand that we see today. Continuing our journey we reach Paihia in the beautiful Bay of Islands. This region is renowned as the birthplace of the nation of New Zealand as well as for its beautiful beaches and wildlife. Scenic Hotel Bay of Islands is set in expansive sub-tropical gardens. The unique theme of Hamilton Gardens is 'the story of gardens' which is explored through a series of five garden collections. The Paradise Garden Collection featuring gardens representing some of the most significant garden design traditions.
3 The Productive Garden Collection representing different aspects of the relationship between people and plants. The Fantasy Garden Collection representing different forms of garden fantasy. The Cultivar Garden Collection featuring the story of plants selected and bred for the garden. The Landscape Garden Collection with areas representing the different historic interpretations of an idealised landscape. From Hamilton we continue to the thermal wonderland of Rotorua, the Sulphur City. Rotorua has the most energetic thermal activity in the country with bubbling mud pools, gushing geysers, beautiful coloured hot springs and terrace formations created by mineral water. Rotorua also has a large Maori population whose cultural activities are interesting and accessible as will be witnessed tomorrow night when we are treated to a Maori cultural experience. Your walking tour commences with a drive through the picturesque 1,250 acre sheep farm with spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges. Your guide will escort you through the ten-acre site recounting fascinating details of how the Hobbiton set was created. The Hobbit holes, Green Dragon Inn, Mill and other structures created for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films can be viewed and during your walking tour you will see how this beautiful piece of Waikato farmland was transformed into The Shire from Middle-earth. Upon completion of your tour enjoy a complimentary beverage in the Green Dragon Inn then return to The Shires Rest. Note other travellers may be on the tour. Afterwards we retrace our journey back to Rotorua. This evening you will be treated to a traditional Hangi (feast) and Maori Concert. You are transferred from your hotel to visit Tamaki Maori Village for a Cultural Experience and Hangi Dinner. Experience the warmth of the Maori people during an evening of ceremonial rituals, powerful cultural performance, storytelling & hangi feasting. Enter the pre-european Maori village, witness the earth being scraped carefully away from the hangi pit and enter their ancestral Meeting House to relax as their family entertain you with a powerful cultural performance before dining on the traditional hangi buffet dinner (Maori feast) cooked the traditional Maori way in an earth oven. The first contains foliage, bamboos, palms, alocasias, ferns and cycads. The second has many species of cyads, e.g. Dioons from Mexico, and species from Madagascar, the Solomon Islands and beyond. Also growing here are Pachypodiums (related to frangipani) with different species flowering most of the year, Euphorbias, and oddities like Welwitschia mirabilis and Dioscorea elephantipes, the climber with the way-out base. The third area is on the north-facing hillside and features succulents, cacti, palm forest and a giant African Lobelia tree. Finally, there is the Paloma Arboretum, with extensive tree plantings. Paloma is classified as of national significance. From Whanganui we cut across the central North Island to Napier where we will check into our hotel. The Scenic Te Pania Hotel, Napier has sweeping views out over the water of Hawke s Bay. A fresh, contemporary style hotel, Scenic Hotel Te Pania is just a short stroll from Napier s main art deco style street and is located in close proximity to many of Napier's attractions. Accommodation: Scenic Te Pania Napier (2 Nights) Day 12, Tuesday 29 October 2019 (B,L) Napier This morning after breakfast take a specialised Art Deco walking of Napier. Napier s now famous Art Deco reputation was a result of the massive earthquake of February 1931 and the subsequent rebuilding of the city in the Art Deco style so popular in the 1930 s. Registering 7.9 on the Richter scale, the earthquake levelled almost all of the buildings in Napier and raised the sea bed by 2.5 metres. This tour combines a gentle walk through Napier city centre with a guided coach tour of the wider Napier area and is a truly complete Art Deco experience. Joining your coach, an Art Deco Trust guide will provide commentary on a tour including Ahuriri port and the 1930s residential suburb of Marewa. Disembarking at the Art Deco Centre, enjoy a walking tour through the city centre, providing a fascinating insight into the 1931 earthquake and the city s rebirth into a world renowned Art Deco gem. This afternoon enjoy some of what the Hawkes Bay is particularly renowned for the wine! Visit the Mission Estate Winery for a 30-minute tour and wine tasting followed by lunch. Established in 1851 by the French Marist religious order, Mission Estate is New Zealand s oldest wine-maker. Housed in an elegantly restored historic seminary building with sweeping views of Napier, the award-winning Mission Estate Restaurant serves exquisite cuisine influenced by seasonal produce.
5 Also visit Church Road Winery, home to New Zealand s only winery museum and take a tour through the winery and also explore the old semi-underground fermentation tanks of yesteryear that are now set up as a museum and also many natural cellars. The wine making process will be explained from the arrival of the grapes through to the finished wines white and reds separately. Returning to the hotel late this afternoon. Dinner tonight is own arrangements. Day 13, Wednesday 30 October 2019 (B) Napier - Wellington Today after breakfast travel through the rolling farmlands of Central Hawkes Bay and the Wairarapa. At Woodville you may wish to take the route through the towns of Pahiatua, Masterton, Greytown and Featherston. We then detour into Martinborough to visit a few of the boutique wineries. Lunch at own expense today. This afternoon continue driving over the Rimutaka Hill into Wellington, New Zealand's capital city which clings to steep hillsides around a magnificent harbour at the southern tip of the North Island. The geographical heart of the country, it is also the political and administrative centre. The city has a cosmopolitan flavour with department stores, boutiques, galleries, trendy cafes and restaurants lining the office-block canyons. James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor, known for our friendly, professional service is located in the heart of Wellington, minutes from the Cable Car, Parliament, and Lambton Quay's shopping district and nearby to Te Papa & Westpac Stadium. Dinner tonight is own arrangements. Accommodation: James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor (2 Nights) Day 14, Thursday 31 October 2019 (B,D) Wellington This morning after breakfast we enjoy an informative sightseeing tour, New Zealand s Capital City, Wellington. We begin with a visit to Otari/Wilton s Bush, New Zealand s only native botanic garden, devoted solely to the cultivation and preservation of indigenous plants. Predominant native trees include mahoe, tawa, kohekohe, rewarewa, hinau and northern rata. Other features at Otari include a fernery, a small Alpine garden, rock garden with adjoining fish pool and a wild garden, all easily accessed by a network of paths and boardwalks. One of the stand out highlights today includes a visit to Old St Paul s. Old St Paul s is a fine example of 19th century Gothic Revival architecture adapted to colonial conditions and materials. Constructed entirely from native timbers, the glowing interior is enhanced by stunning stained-glass windows. Memorial items and displays tell the early history of Wellington. Next, we take a ride on the one-hundred-year-old cable car from the city centre up to the Botanic Gardens. The rest of the afternoon is free to explore New Zealand s capital city. We highly recommend a visit to Te Papa, (Our Place) New Zealand s national museum, which truly is not like any other national museum in the world. Farewell dinner tonight is at your hotel.
