3 Welcome to the Tumbarumba Region Tumbarumba is situated on the western side of the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales, and boasts mountains, rivers and lakes, parks, forests and farms, and clean fresh air. The boundaries extend as far as Mount Kosciuszko in the south, and to the Murray River on the western border. The area is ideal for recreational activity such as bush walking, horse riding, fishing and cycling. The history of goldmining, timber and cattle, and the cleverly engineered Snowy Mountains Scheme has created an intriguing heritage. The snowfields of Selwyn and Thredbo can be accessed from Tumbarumba and Khancoban, and the Kosciuszko National Park offers stunning mountain scenery and a variety of walking tracks. Snow does fall occasionally in the town of Tumbarumba and surrounds during winter. The region also includes the township of Khancoban and villages of Jingellic, Laurel Hill, Rosewood and Tooma. Tumbarumba Visitor Information Centre is the first place to visit when you arrive. Conveniently located at the end of the main street, here our friendly staff can assist you with all the local information you will need, including what to see and do in the area, events and accommodation. This is a marked loop of about 3km which meanders through snow gum woodlands and across snowgrass flats, and past an old ore crushing battery. The Kosciuszko Summit Walk. If you are staying in Khancoban don t miss the opportunity to walk to the top of Australia s highest mountain! Drive to Thredbo along the Kosciuszko Alpine Way, and catch the Kosciuszko Express chairlift (cost applies) at Thredbo to the start of the track which leads to the Kosciuszko Lookout (about 2km) and then for another 4.5 km on to the summit. Park use fee applies. HUME AND HOVELL TRACK The Hume & Hovell Track stretches 440km from Yass to Albury and retraces as closely as is practical, the route followed by the explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in For long distance walkers the track offers up to a 20 day trek but the design also caters for half day, one day, and weekend walks. The easiest access point for this track is at the Henry Angel Track Head, located on Burra Creek, about 7km south of Tumbarumba on the Tooma Road. The walk from this track head to the Tumbarumba Creek is a distance of 12km return, and takes about 5 to 6 hours. This part of Burra Creek has a number of historic and man-made features as well as outstanding scenic appeal. During the goldmining days a tunnel was excavated to divert the creek for 70 metres. There are viewing platforms at each end of the tunnel. It is about one hour to walk to the tunnel and back. Along the creek there are further reminders of the mining era as well as a series of waterfalls. The track is also a great trail for mountain bike riders, caution must be taken for the safety of all track users. For more information about the Hume and Hovell Track see: recreation/walking_tracks/hume_and_ hovell_walking_track Buddong Hut, along the Hume and Hovell Track Detailed map kits of the track are available at the Tumbarumba Information Centre. 9

14 Attractions FOOD & WINE The cool climate of Tumbarumba makes the region ideal for growing blueberries and grapes. For blueberry growers, the chill factor in the winter months produces a very high quality blueberry, with intense flavour. Visitors can purchase fresh berries directly from the family-owned farm gates. The season typically operates from December until March. The region is also becoming a well recognised cool climate wine region. The wine industry was established in Tumbarumba in the early eighties and is therefore still regarded as one of the newest wine producing regions in New South Wales. There are approximately 330 hectares of vineyard plantings in the Tumbarumba region, with an annual crush of about 3000 tonnes. Tumbarumba s signature wines are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for sparkling and table wines. In recent years the newer plantings include Merlot, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Shiraz and Viognier. The majority of grapes produced in the region are sold onto the major wine companies, with small parcels of fruit staying in the area. Of the fruit that remains in the region, a select number of growers produce under their own labels. Such wines are available at the two local supermarkets.
