PROVISIONAL ITINERARY & GENERAL INFORMATION Wednesday, 14 th Tuesday, 27 th June Among the places we visit are: On this tour we attend Canada s largest civil and military airshows: the Canadian Warplane Heritage s (CWH) FlyFest at Hamilton and the Canadian Air Force s annual international airshow on CFB Bagotville. As we travel through the provinces of Ontario and Quebec we visit various aviation museums and collections both large and small, well-known and not so well-known. We fly from London s Gatwick Airport on the scheduled services of Canadian airline Air Transat; travel incountry is by de-luxe coach (see appropriate paragraph in General Information on page 6); stay in superior hotel accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis throughout; and are accompanied by one of our well-travelled and experienced tour managers. 2 PROVISIONAL ITINERARY (all times local) DAY 1: WEDNESDAY, 14 th JUNE Between 07:30 and 09:00 please go to Air Transat s check-in/bag-drop counters which are located in the South Terminal of London s Gatwick Airport. Then meet your Ian Allan Tour Manager and fellow enthusiasts who will be gathering in the immediate vicinity. Please note that for flights to/from Canada the latest check-in/bag-drop time we recommend is 3 hours prior to departure, i.e. 09:00. Gatwick, South Terminal Flight: TS 223 Departs: 12:00 Toronto Arrives: 15:00 On arrival we go through Immigration, Baggage Reclaim and Customs, and in the Arrivals Hall meet our driver and board the coach for the transfer to Hamilton: a journey time of a little over one hour. We check-in to the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel where we stay 5 nights on a bed and breakfast basis. Breakfast is taken on-site, however, for your evening meals you have the option of several restaurants located within a short walking distance of the hotel. DAY 2: THURSDAY, 15 th JUNE Leaving the hotel at 08:30 we head for Windsor and the Canadian Historical Aircraft Association who are restoring an Avro Lancaster and a DH Mosquito! Other aircraft in their collection include 2 Chipmunks, a Harvard, Stearman and a T-33. Website: Then to London and the Jet Aircraft Museum: its collection includes a BAC Jet Provost, no less than 6 Canadair T-33 Silver Stars, a CF-101 Voodoo (pictured right) and, delivered last year from the UK, a Hawker Hunter T7. Optional flights in the JP and T-33 available: ask for details! Website: DAY 3: FRIDAY, 16 th JUNE At 08:30 we set off for Dunnville and our visit to No 6 RCAF Dunnville Association Museum. On display are aircraft types used at the No 6 SFTS and other Canadian training bases, including a Yale, Cornell, Fleet Finch and a Harvard; plus there is a Grumman S2 Tracker that flew off the carrier HMCS Bonaventure and a WWI Nieuport 17. Website: Arriving back in Hamilton at midday, the remainder of the day is spent looking at the excellent collection of 50 beautifully restored aircraft in the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, a good number of which are airworthy and offer optional flights. Today should be less crowded than the weekend. DAYS 4 & 5: SATURDAY, 17 th & SUNDAY, 18 th JUNE Two full days at the CWH s 2017 FlyFest International Airshow. As well as their warbirds attending and/or participating there will also be other types from both Canada and the USA; details will be announced over the coming months. On the Saturday we will stay on the airfield if there is a Night Airshow to be confirmed. 3 DAY 6: MONDAY, 19 th JUNE At 09:00 we depart for our first visit of the day: the Great War Flying Museum in Brampton. Their mission is to provide the finest local presentation of World War I aviation history by acquiring, building, maintaining and flying representations of period aircraft as well as displaying period artifacts. On display is: a DH2, Fokker D VII, 2 Fokker Dr Is, Neiuport s8c.1, S.E.5A, Sopwith 1½ Strutter and a Sopwith F.1 Camel. Website: Next the Avroland/Memorial Military Museum in Campbellford. On display here are: Avro 652A Anson II (major parts); Avro Canada CF-100 Canuck; Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow (scale replica); Beech D18S Expeditor (fuselage); CF-5A Freedom Fighter; CT-114 Tutor; CT-133 Silver Star; CT-134 Musketeer; Cessna AT-17A Bobcat; Commonwealth PBY-5 Canso (fuselage); Fokker D.VII (replica) and a Republic RC-3 Seabee. Website: A few miles from the National Air Force Museum of Canada we check-in to the Ramada-Trenton hotel where we stay one night on a bed and continental breakfast basis. On-site facilities include full service restaurant and bar. Website: DAY 7: TUESDAY, 20 th JUNE We start the day in Trenton at the fabulous collection in the National Air Force Museum of Canada (formerly the RCAF Memorial Museum): star attraction is their beautifully restored Handley Page Halifax (pictured). We then continue to Ottawa, arriving around midafternoon. This evening we check-in for a 2-nights stay at the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel Ottawa Airport on a bed and hot breakfast basis. On-site facilities include restaurant and bar, free in-room wi-fi and an indoor swimming pool with a whirlpool. Website: YOWAPGI/index.html DAY 8: WEDNESDAY, 21 st JUNE This morning we look around the Canadian War Museum whose collection includes: UH-1B Iroquois, COH- 58 Kiowa, CF-5A Freedom Fighter, Fieseler Fi-103, CF101F Voodoo, Nieuport 17, Harvard II, Sopwith Snipe and a Spitfire F.IIb. Website: We then drive to Rockcliffe Airport, home of the Canada Aviation and Space Museum which has more than 130 aircraft on display! We plan to start our visit at the Reserve Hangar to see the various aircraft which are not on public display these include a Mosquito BXX and a Bristol Bolingbroke IVT. Confirmation is awaited of a visit to their restoration workshop where we understand their Canadian C-54GM North Star is being fully restored. Website: After the Reserve Hangar we have plenty of time to see the aircraft in the main exhibit area. DAY 9: THURSDAY, 22 nd JUNE Crossing the border into the Province of Quebec, at Gatineau Airport we stop by the very interesting collection of Vintage Wings of Canada. Pictured left is their immaculate WACO Taperwing ATO. 4 Continuing north we arrive early evening in Saguenay-Chicoutimi and our hotel for the next 4 nights: the La Sagueneenne Hotel and Convention Centre in Ville Saguenay-Chicoutimi where we stay on a bed and breakfast basis. On-site facilities include restaurant, bar, free wi-fi and an atrium with saltwater indoor pool, sauna and hot tubs. Website: DAY 10: FRIDAY, 23 rd JUNE At 09:00 we depart for a full day inside or outside CFB Bagotville. We will apply for everyone s media accreditation, however, if this is not forthcoming and/or we are not allowed on-base today, we will take our photos of aircraft arriving for the airshow outside at the end of the landing runway. This base is fightertown, home to the 425 th and 433 rd Tactical Fighter Squadrons flying the CF-118/B Hornet; also based here are the CH-146s of the 439 th Combat Support Squadron. There is an excellent collection of aircraft on display in the base s Musee de la Defense Aerienne including: CF-100, CH-118 Iroquois, CL-13B Sabre 6, CL-30 Silver Star, CL-41 Tutor, two CF-104 Starfighters, a CF-5A Freedom Fighter, Vampire FB.5, CF-101B Voodoo, MiG-23ML and a Piasecki CH-21A Work Horse. DAYS 11 & 12: SATURDAY, 24 th & SUNDAY, 25 th JUNE At 07:00 we depart on what is usually a 30-minutes drive to CFB Bagotville for 2 full days at this very popular airshow. Over the years this event has built itself an excellent reputation for holding the largest military airshow in Canada and breaking the record for the longest wall of fire. Website: DAY 13: MONDAY, 26 th JUNE Departing the hotel at 09:00 we return to Montreal: it s about a 6½ hour drive and en-route we will make several convenience stops to stretch our legs and take a 1-hour lunch. We should arrive at Montreal Airport around 17:00 just as Air Transat s check-in opens. Latest check-in time is 19:15. 6 GENERAL INFORMATION Payment for A deposit of per person should accompany your Booking Form, with the balance due 10 weeks prior to the tour s departure. Please see your Booking Confirmation/Invoice for the exact date. Please note that a reminder of the payment date will not be sent. Tours Affected by World Events or Unforeseen/Unplanned Circumstances In an ever-changing world, events may occur immediately before or during a tour that result in cancellations or changes to the tour itinerary. For example, an increase in security may result in an approved visit being cancelled by the host, etc.. cannot be held responsible for any tour being cancelled, or itineraries affected, due to world events or circumstances beyond our control. Coach Travel only use coaches chartered from reputable companies, with a driver. Where we have had to cancel a tour, due to the small number of bookings, we have looked at the possibility of renting a 9-18 seater mini-van, with our tour manager driving. However, without exception, the hiring of such a vehicle is illegal if any of the occupants make any payment towards the rental price, fuel and/or other expenses - known as for hire or reward. Any such rental, made without these facts being made known to the rental company at the time of booking, also invalidates all insurance covering the vehicle, contents and persons. The DVLA has also confirmed that any for hire or reward rental could breach the normal driving classification of a standard UK driver s license. Therefore, we do not undertake any tours using 9-18 seater mini-vans from a rental company; either with our tour manager, or a member of the group, driving. Passport & Visa Citizens of the UK are required to be in possession of a Full UK Passport, which must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of your return. You may also refer to the World Travel Guide: for general information on passports, visas and health requirements. IMPORTANT NEW MANDATORY REGULATIONS FOR ENTRY TO CANADA - Electronic Travel Authorisation (eta) You will now need to apply for a Canadian Electronic Travel Authorisation or eta (very similar to the American ESTA entry document). To apply, you must have a valid passport, a credit card, and an address, as well as a few minutes to complete the on-line form. Please go to the following official Canadian government website: An eta only costs $7.00 CAD (approximately 4.30) and most applications are approved within minutes of applying. An eta is valid for 5 years or until your current passport expires, whichever occurs first. We strongly recommend that you keep a photocopy of the eta with your passport. The above means that all travellers going to Canada are required to apply for authorisation to travel under the scheme before arriving at their departure airport: on this tour this is London s Gatwick Airport. No eta no check-in - no flight - no tour. The responsibility for acquiring an eta lies with each individual (and not ). If you arrive at check-in without an eta (or a Canadian Visa if you were refused an eta), you will not be allowed to travel to Canada. No refund of the tour price whatsoever will be possible from Ian Allan Aviation Tours. It is also extremely unlikely that any travel insurance company would agree any subsequent claim therefore it is important that you act upon this information NOW. 7 FCO Consular Advice The FCO s consular service is a major operation. Every hour of every day consular staff around the world are advising and helping British nationals. We suggest you visit for upto-date passport, visa and security information on the destination you intend visiting. In addition, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) provides both a web site and an Information Line, telephone: This line is open between the hours 10:00 16:00 hrs., Monday-Friday (excluding bank holidays). Baggage Regulations Air Transat Departing from London s Gatwick Airport Checked Baggage: Air Transat will transport 1 piece of checked baggage per person free of charge, the total dimensions of which must not exceed 62ins (158cms), including the handle, pockets and wheels. Maximum weight is 51lbs (23kgs) per bag. Cabin Baggage: for travel out of Gatwick Airport you may take 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item. Your main piece of hand baggage can be up to the dimensions of 20ins x 16ins x 9ins (51cms x 40cms x 23cms), including handles and wheels. Carry-on baggage must be stowed under your seat or in an overhead locker. Maximum weight is 22lbs (10kgs). All larger-sized items must go in the aircraft s hold. Limited quantities of liquids are allowed as hand baggage but must be carried separately through security in a clear plastic, zip-top or re-sealable bag that does not exceed 8 inches x 8 inches (20cms x 20cms) or quart size. Individual containers must not exceed 90ml or 3 American ounces, and items must fit in the bag comfortably and the bag must be completely closed. The bag can only contain: Shampoo, suntan lotions, creams, toothpaste, hair gel and hair spray, perfumes, cosmetics such as mascara and lip gloss, water and other drinks, soups and syrups and other items of a similar consistency. Hand baggage can include: Electronic equipment including mobile phones, digital cameras and MP3 players (such as i-pods). Laptops must be removed from the bag for x-ray. Prescription medicines in liquid form, e.g. diabetic kit. All electrical devices, e.g. cameras, laptops, i-pads, mobile phones etc, must be fully charged. If not they, and you, may have to undergo additional security checks which could result in you missing your flight; in which case depending on the co-operation of the airline - you may have to purchase new tickets (if you do not board your first flight then all other flights are automatically cancelled). Following the official recall of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones, the Canadian authorities and all Canadian airlines have banned the use of these phones if you are flying to or from Canada. If you own a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phone, you must NOT turn your phone on or connect it to any power source during your journey. Passengers must also protect the devices from accidental activation, including disabling any features that may turn on the device, such as alarm clocks. The phone is also to be carried on board as hand luggage and not to be packed within any checked luggage. At security all remaining items should be placed in the tray provided for screening, e.g. car keys and fobs, cash, solid food, books, newspapers, cigarettes and tobacco, belts and shoes. Pushchairs and walking aids are permitted but must be x-ray screened. All wheelchairs will be subject to search. Please note, you may be subject to a hand search by the security team and required to remove footwear to be x-ray screened. Once in the departure lounge passengers may purchase certain items in any shop and take it onto the aircraft as normal. Passengers may be subject to a secondary search at the departure gate before boarding. Any items not on the approved list will be removed. As baggage regulations can change with little warning, due to security requirements, you are strongly advised to contact the airline for the latest information nearer to the time of your departure. 8 Meals Meals are not normally included in the price of our tours unless they are included within the room rate as we realise that not everyone wants three meals a day. On this tour breakfast only is included. Air Transat include meals on their long-haul services between the UK and Canada. Health Requirements There are currently no known mandatory or recommended precautions required for travel to Canada. However, we strongly recommend that you consult your local doctor or health centre for the latest information. Climate and Dress The weather will be sunny during our visit with temperatures hovering around 66ºF (19 C). For example, in Ottawa the average temperature is somewhat warm at 18.1 C (64.58 F); afternoons can be fairly hot with average high temperatures reaching 23.6 C (74.5 F); and overnight temperatures are generally quite mild with an average low of 12.5 C (54.5 F). So we recommend summer items of clothing with a jacket or jumper for the cooler evenings. Travel Insurance For citizens of the United Kingdom, can provide competitive and comprehensive insurance cover for the duration of your tour. However, if you do not wish to take out our insurance, you must ensure that comparable or greater cover is taken. The number of your Insurance Policy should be written, if known, on your Booking Form at the time of making the reservation, but no later than the date when final payment is due. A copy of the policy must be forwarded to. Individual insurance policies are arranged through CoverMore Insurance Services Limited; the premiums for which will vary according to your circumstances. Full details are available on request. The Policies for the USA also include cover for non-scheduled flights, i.e. pleasure flights, where the aircraft is licensed and insured to undertake such flights, and where a payment is made. Wheelchair Assistance at Airports Anyone requiring wheelchair assistance at airports must have this service requested and confirmed in advance. Airlines and/or airports can no longer provide this service without prior confirmation, therefore, please annotate your booking form accordingly. Flexible Itinerary We are very happy for enthusiasts to take time away from the printed itinerary to pursue their own interests during multi-day stays in the same place, so long as they inform the Tour Manager. It will be the individual s responsibility to ensure that they re-join the group in the hotel at the stated time on the day of departure. Land Only Price For enthusiasts who would prefer to join the tour in Toronto (instead of flying from the UK with the main group), we can quote a Land Only price on request. This price does not include any flights whatsoever and you are strongly advised to contact us before making your own flight arrangements in the event that there has been a change to the published itinerary. Please note that the Land Only price is based on you meeting the tour at the hotel and does not include the transfer from Toronto Airport. If your flight arrives earlier than the main group s then a seat on the coach to Hamilton will be available for a supplement of The transfer to Montreal Airport at the end of the tour is included in the tour price. Flight Timings & Connecting Travel Arrangements to Departure Airport All flight departure and arrival times are correct at the time of preparing each itinerary, however, airlines may change these times with little or no prior warning. In practice such changes are only a few minutes either way and the final itinerary will show the actual times. Clients making their own arrangements to get to the departure airport by air, rail, coach etc., should bare the above in mind if purchasing nonrefundable or non-changeable tickets. cannot be held responsible for any changes to flight times, and any privately arranged travel tickets to the airport becoming invalid. Purple Meet & Greet Car Parking at London s Gatwick Airport, South Terminal: from your home or overnight hotel, simply drive to the far end of the Drop Off/Pick lane on the ground level at terminal, and hand your car over to their representative. Your car will be taken to an off-airport, secure, car park. On your return, the driver and your car will be waiting for you in the same location. Simple and very convenient.
