Sunday, 14 th to Monday, 29 th July A fabulous holiday to floatplane bases, large and small, around Ontario in Canada. Here you can experience the unique thrill and excitement of take-offs and landings on water! Whether you re an enthusiast looking for excellent photographic opportunities, along with some flights in classic (and modern) floatplanes, or a pilot keen to get some stick time on floats, this is the perfect tour. Each summer thousands of mainly American and Canadian hunters and fishermen are flown out to the hundreds of lodges and camp sites scattered throughout the Province, by the many (large and small) floatplane operators. But they are not too busy to give pleasure flights they are used to Ian Allan Aviation groups coming over from the UK - and word quickly gets around. Soon you are being greeted with we ve heard you re over here again, we ve been expecting you! July is also the time of the annual gathering of Norseman aircraft at Red Lake the Norseman Centre of the World. As the years pass by, the numbers of this famous Dutch bush float-master, get fewer, but as many as possible from Canada and the USA still make the journey to northern Ontario. You have the option of extending your holiday with 3 incredible days at the world s largest aviation event: the EAA s annual convention and fly-in on Wittman Field in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, USA. During our travels, there will be many opportunities to enjoy sightseeing flights. All flights are optional and are arranged on the day; the cost is negotiated by your Ian Allan Tour Manager and divided equally amongst those wishing to fly at the time. Our last floatplane tour to this part of Canada resulted in over 35 flights in nearly 20 different aircraft types: classics like Beaver, Turbo Beaver, Otter, Turbo Otter, Twin Otter, Beech 18, Found, Piper Cub, various Cessna s (from 180s to Caravans) etc! You are free to do none, some or all of the flights. We fly on the scheduled services of Aer Lingus from London s Heathrow Airport, via Dublin; it is here that we go through US Immigration and Customs (instead of on arrival at Minneapolis/St Paul Airport). Travel throughout the USA and Canada is by air-conditioned coach (please read the appropriate paragraph on page 9 General Information ); and one of our well-travelled and experienced Tour Managers accompanies you throughout. In Canada we stay each night at a comfortable hotel/motel with a restaurant and bar on-site or adjacent, on a B&B or room only basis as stated. On the optional extension to Oshkosh you have the choice of staying in 3 very different standards of halls of residence at the University of Wisconsin (UWO): 2-bedroomed, airconditioned suites (each bedroom has 2 separate beds) with en-suite bathroom; or, with communal bathrooms, both air-conditioned or standard (non-aircon) accommodation rooms: see page 7. 2 PROVISIONAL ITINERARY (all times local) DAY 1: SUNDAY, 14 th JULY Between 08:30 and 09:20 please check-in with Aer Lingus who operate out of Terminal 2 at London s Heathrow Airport. Then meet your Ian Allan Tour Manager and fellow enthusiasts who will be gathering in the check-in area. Latest recommended check-in time is 90 minutes prior to departure, i.e. 09:20. Heathrow Airport, Terminal 2 Flight: EI 157 Departs: 10:50 Dublin Arrives: 12:20 On arrival we follow the signs for US Immigration and Customs, where, after completing the normal arrival formalities (instead of doing them in Minneapolis), we go to the departure gate of our onward flight to Minneapolis/St Paul Airport; boarding should start around 13:30. Dublin Flight: EI 89 Departs: 14:10 Minneapolis/St Paul Arrives: 16:55 After collecting our luggage we meet our coach driver and drive the 3 miles to our hotel for tonight: the Holiday Inn Minneapolis/St Paul SE Eagan, staying on a room only basis. There is an on-site restaurant and lounge. Website: DAY 2: MONDAY, 15 th JULY At 09:00 we depart for Fort Francis in Canada, making convenience and lunch stops en-route. On arrival, in the afternoon, we visit local floatplane operators including Rusty Meyers Flying Services. Driving back into the town we check-in for 1 night, on a room only basis, at the La Place Rendez-Vous Hotel and Convention Centre where our rooms look out over Sandy Bay on Rainy Lake. Among the hotel s facilities are an on-site restaurant and lounge (bar). Breakfast is included. Website: DAY 3: TUESDAY, 16 th JULY At 09:00 we set out for Kenora, via the floatplane operators and bases of Emo, Nestor Falls, Ear Falls and Sioux Narrows. Over the next few days will take-in stops at bases large and small such as Clearwater Lake, Kenora, Vermillion Falls and Dryden etc.. We stay tonight at the Clarion Lakeside Inn & Conference Centre, on a room only basis. Situated on the side of the beautiful Lake of the Woods, their restaurant and bar is situated on the top floor with fabulous panoramic views looking out over the surrounding countryside and downtown Kenora. Website: DAY 4: WEDNESDAY, 17 th JULY Most of the day is spent in Kenora, until late afternoon when we make the 90-minutes drive to Dryden. Then check-in at the Best Western Plus Dryden for our 1 night stay which is on a room only basis. On site is the B&B Roadhouse Bar and Grill; there is also an indoor heated swimming pool. Website: Conference-Centre/Hotel-Overview.do?propertyCode=66006 DAY 5: THURSDAY, 18 th JULY Before checking out the local floatplanes, our first port of call is to the well-known Kuby s Aircraft Yard which is one of the main engineering and maintenance companies specialising in floatplanes. During the latter half of the afternoon we drive to Sioux Lookout, with a stop en-route in Hudson to see if either of 2 very rare Found floatplanes are still there. We stay the night at the Forest Inn Motel on a room only basis, with its own restaurant and lounge complete with an outdoor deck overlooking Pelican Lake. 3 DAY 6: FRIDAY, 19 th JULY We spend most of the day checking out the floatplane scene in Sioux Lookout. Then it s off to Balmertown, a few miles from Red Lake, where we check-in at the Balmer Hotel for the next 3 nights on a bed and breakfast basis. Its facilities include a restaurant and lounge. Website: DAY 7: SATURDAY, 20 th JULY We spend a full day at Red Lake at the 2019 Norseman Festival. Pictured right is this immaculate Norseman. DAY 8: SUNDAY, 21 st JULY This morning we first go to Balmertown Airport where we plan on visiting the Canadair CL-415 waterbombers at the local firebase. Then to Cochenour Seaplane Base. Remainder of the day is free in Red Lake. DAY 9: MONDAY, 22 nd JULY At 09:00 we leave for Fort Frances, stopping on the way wherever further pleasure flight opportunities present themselves. Like our first night, we stay at the La Place Rendez-Vous Hotel and Conference Centre, on a bed and breakfast basis. DAY 10: TUESDAY, 23 rd JULY Leaving the hotel at 09:00 we cross back into the USA, to Minneapolis. In the afternoon we visit the excellent collection of aircraft in the Minnesota Air National Guard Museum. For those continuing on the optional extension to Oshkosh they will stay overnight at the Holiday Inn- Minneapolis/St Paul East-Eagan. Those returning to London will check-in with Aer Lingus; latest check in time is 16:00. 5 OPTIONAL EXTENSION TO OSHKOSH DAY 11: WEDNESDAY, 24 th JULY Checked out and bags on the coach we set off for Oshkosh, a 5 hours drive to the south (with convenience and lunch stops en-route). We have 2-bedroom suites in the Horizon Village and, in a couple of the halls of residence, twin-bedded rooms with and without air-conditioning; we stay 4 nights on a room only basis. The remainder of the day is free to relax or take the EAA shuttle bus to Wittman Field and spend time at Oshkosh 2019! A good opportunity to purchase your admission tickets instead of the next morning when it will be busy. Or maybe you have already purchased them in advance on-line? DAYS 12-14: THURSDAY, 25 th SATURDAY, 27 th JULY 3 full days at Oshkosh DAY 15: SUNDAY, 28 th JULY At 09:00 our coach picks up those on our Canadian Floatplanes, long and short Oshkosh tours and we all return to Chicago O Hare Airport together, making a stop for lunch (at your own expense) en-route. On arrival at O Hare we check-in with Aer Lingus for our overnight flight back to Dublin and on to Heathrow; latest recommended check in time by the airline is 3 hours prior to departure: 17:20. 8 ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS AT THE UWO OSHKOSH South Gruenhagen Hall of Residence, University of Wisconsin Standard: at the UWO, rooms are rented out whilst the students are away on summer vacation. Each room is of a basic standard comprising 2 single beds, set of drawers, wardrobe, desk, etc. There is no washbasin in the room: all washing facilities (sinks, showers and baths) are communal on each floor. There is no air-conditioning. Many regulars either take or purchase small electric fans. Rooms can be booked for single or 2-person occupation, as you prefer. Taylor Hall of Residence, University of Wisconsin Standard: exactly the same as above except the rooms have air-conditioning. Horizon Village Opened in the spring of 2013, this new hall of residence is air-conditioned and has ensuite facilities. Suites comprise: 2 bedrooms (each with 2 single beds); a shared furnished living room and kitchenette with a full size refrigerator and a microwave (no cooker or oven); 2 bathrooms; a single shower. See 2-bedroom room layout opposite. Those booking a single room will occupy one of the two twin-bedded bedrooms: the other bedroom will be occupied either by another single person or 2 enthusiasts booking on a twin-bedded room basis. Depending on the number of bookings we receive, we will endeavour not to put single and twin-share bookings in the same suite, but one single booking in each bedroom. Please note: Some of the suites contain 3 twin-bedded bedrooms not 2; however, we have specifically requested we are allocated only 2-bedroom suites. Although we will do everything we can to ensure we are given 2-bedroom suites, Ian Allan cannot be held responsible if the University allocates the former. Accommodation at the University is on a room only basis. Excellent buffet meals can be enjoyed at the University s Blackhawk cafeteria, which serves large breakfasts, lunch and evening meals. In addition, there are other eating and drinking options on the campus. Irrespective of which type of accommodation you choose, we recommend you take your own towels, soap and hair shampoo. Transfers to/from Wittman Field is on the local Oshkosh GO TRANSIT shuttle bus service which operates from dawn to dusk: it costs $3.00 (2018 rate) for a return journey - they don t do singles! Note: exact fare only no change given! A copy of the map and schedule will be included with your travel documents. 9 GENERAL INFORMATION Payment for A deposit of per person should accompany your Booking Form, with the balance due 10 weeks prior to the tour s departure. Please see your Booking Confirmation/Invoice for the exact date. Please note that a reminder of the payment date will not be sent. Tours Affected by World Events or Unforeseen/Unplanned Circumstances In an ever-changing world, events may occur immediately before or during a tour that result in cancellations or changes to the tour itinerary. For example, an increase in security may result in an approved visit being cancelled by the host, etc.. cannot be held responsible for any tour being cancelled, or itineraries affected, due to world events or circumstances beyond our control. Coach Travel only use coaches chartered from reputable companies, with a driver. Where we have had to cancel a tour, due to the small number of bookings, we have looked at the possibility of renting a 9-18 seater mini-van, with our tour manager driving. However, without exception, the hiring of such a vehicle is illegal if any of the occupants make any payment towards the rental price, fuel and/or other expenses - known as for hire or reward. Any such rental, made without these facts being made known to the rental company at the time of booking, also invalidates all insurance covering the vehicle, contents and persons. The DVLA has also confirmed that any for hire or reward rental could breach the normal driving classification of a standard U.K. driver s license. Therefore, we do not undertake any tours using 9-18 seater mini-vans from a rental company; either with our tour manager, or a member of the group, driving. Passports and Visas Citizens of the UK are required to be in possession of a Full UK Passport, which must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of your return. You may also refer to the World Travel Guide: for general information on passports, visas and health requirements. IMPORTANT NEW MANDATORY REGULATIONS FOR ENTRY TO CANADA - Electronic Travel Authorisation (eta) You will now need to apply for a Canadian Electronic Travel Authorisation or eta (very similar to the American ESTA entry document). To apply, you must have a valid passport, a credit card, and an address, as well as a few minutes to complete the on-line form. Please go to the following official Canadian government website: An eta only costs $7.00 CAD (approximately 4.30) and most applications are approved within minutes of applying. An eta is valid for 5 years or until your current passport expires, whichever occurs first. We strongly recommend that you keep a photocopy of the eta with your passport. The responsibility for acquiring an eta lies with each individual (and not ). If you arrive at check-in without an eta (or a Canadian Visa if you were refused an eta), you will not be allowed to travel to Canada. No refund of the tour price whatsoever will be possible from Ian Allan Aviation Tours. It is also extremely unlikely that any travel insurance company would agree any subsequent claim therefore it is important that you act upon this information NOW. IMPORTANT MANDATORY REGULATIONS FOR ENTRY TO THE USA - Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) Anyone seeking entry to the USA must have an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA), which was introduced by the US government in January 2010 for all persons flying into the United States under the Visa Waiver Scheme. 10 This means that all travellers are required to apply for authorisation to travel under the scheme before arriving at their departure airport. The changes affect all passport holders from 34 countries currently participating in the Visa Waiver Scheme (includes the UK). You must apply prior to departing on this tour. You can only apply online at From September 2010 a charge of $14.00 was introduced for all new ESTA applications. If you apply on the above website there are NO OTHER CHARGES WHATSOEVER for this service - but be warned, there are several unofficial websites that offer you this service but will charge a higher amount. The application process will take approximately 15 minutes and authorisation is normally granted immediately but may take up to 72 hours. We recommend that you apply for authorisation at the time of booking your place on our tour - or at very latest 72 hours before the tour departs, to ensure you are able to travel. If your application for an ESTA is unsuccessful you must apply for a US visa from the US Embassy in London. Once granted, your ESTA is valid for two years, during which time you need not re-apply however you are required to up-date your ESTA each time you visit the USA. After 2 years you will have to apply for another ESTA. We have heard of instances where an ESTA has been cancelled by the US authorities without prior warning or notification to the holder! Therefore, we recommend you check your ESTA when planning your travel to the USA. We also strongly recommend that you keep a photocopy of the ESTA with your passport. We suggest you visit for upto-date passport, visa and security information on the destination you intend visiting. In addition, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) provides both a web site and an Information Line, telephone: This line is open between the hours 10:00 1 Examination of Flight Bookings by US Customs APIS Information All airlines flying to the United States are obliged to provide information about US-bound passengers, under an agreement reached between the United States and the European Commission on the 18 th February Under the agreement, as of 5 th March 2003, US customs officials have discretionary power to examine passenger booking information held on computer reservation systems relating to flights beginning, ending, or stopping over in the United States. The European Commission has received guarantees from the United States that this information will be used appropriately. This requirement, based on the US Air Safety and Transportation law of November 2001, is intended to increase air safety and is in addition to the information supplied when applying for your ESTA (see above paragraph). Inspection of Luggage by US Transport Security Administration Items of luggage going into the hold of the aircraft may be opened by US Transport Security Administration (TSA) officials without you being present. In some instances locked suitcases have been forced open, their contents checked, and then re-sealed with tape and a note left inside by the TSA. Most airlines and insurance companies insist that your unaccompanied luggage be locked at all times; the TSA prefer they are left unlocked! The only advice we (and ABTA) can give at this time is that it is your choice whether you leave your suitcases locked or unlocked. 11 insurance company before making a decision. Or you may purchase a TSA Approved Lock, available at various local retail shops (and airports); these locks can be opened by the TSA, thereby, avoiding damage to your luggage. First Nights Stay in the USA Airlines flying into the USA are required to provide the American authorities with the full postal address of where each passenger will stay on their first night. The address will be stated on the final itinerary and the accompanying covering letter. Baggage Regulations Aer Lingus Departing from London s Heathrow Airport Checked Baggage: Aer Lingus will transport 1 piece of checked baggage per person free of charge, the total dimensions of which must not exceed 158cms (62ins). Maximum weight is 20kgs (44lbs). Cabin Baggage: Aer Lingus permits customers to carry one piece of cabin baggage with a weight limit of 10kg and maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 24 cm. You can also bring a smaller piece of hand luggage into the cabin, such as a laptop, maximum dimensions of 25 x 33 x 20cm. Limited quantities of liquids are allowed as hand baggage but must be carried separately through security in a clear plastic, zip-top or re-sealable bag that does not exceed 20cm x 20cm (8 inches x 8 inches), or quart size. Individual containers must not exceed 90ml or 3 American ounces, and items must fit in the bag comfortably and the bag must be completely closed. The bag can only contain: Shampoo, suntan lotions, creams, toothpaste, hair gel and hair spray, perfumes, cosmetics such as mascara and lip gloss, water and other drinks, soups and syrups and other items of a similar consistency. Hand baggage can include: Electronic equipment including mobile phones, digital cameras and MP3 players (such as i-pods). Laptops must be removed from the bag for x-ray. Prescription medicines in liquid form, e.g. diabetic kit. All electrical devices, e.g. cameras, laptops, i-pads, mobile phones etc, must be fully charged. If not they, and you, may have to undergo additional security checks which could result in you missing your flight; in which case depending on the co-operation of the airline - you may have to purchase new tickets (if you do not board your first flight then all other flights are automatically cancelled). At security all remaining items should be placed in the tray provided for screening, e.g. car keys and fobs, cash, solid food, books, newspapers, cigarettes and tobacco, belts and shoes. Pushchairs and walking aids are permitted but must be x-ray screened. All wheelchairs will be subject to search. Please note, you may be subject to a hand search by the security team and required to remove footwear to be x-ray screened. Once in the departure lounge passengers may purchase certain items in any shop and take it onto the aircraft as normal. Passengers may be subject to a secondary search at the departure gate before boarding. Any items not on the approved list will be removed. As baggage regulations can change with little warning, due to security requirements, you are strongly advised to contact the airline for the latest information nearer to the time of your departure. ATMs Hole in the Wall Cash Dispensers: Cash dispensing machines are located on Wittman Field as follows: Main Gate; Fly Market; Southeast Corner of EAA Wearhouse; Sky Shoppe; Vintage Grill; EAA AirVenture Museum; EAA Welcome Center Food Court; EAA Bus Terminal; and Ultralight Headquarters. EAA Membership and Admission 2019 Full details of EAA membership is shown on their website at Annual membership costs $40.00 for 12 months. For 4 days at Airventure the cheapest option is to join the EAA ($40.00) and purchase a Weekly Pass ($123.00). Also, EAA members are allowed to take in 1 guest (e.g. 1 other member of the group?), at the Members Guest Rate of $ for a Weekly Pass (without the guest having to join the EAA). You can pay online in advance - and get a reduced price - or on your arrival. We suggest you do not join the EAA and/or purchase tickets until we have confirmed the tour is going as scheduled. Please note: all prices above are 2018 rates, we await details of Meals On this tour, in Minneapolis and throughout Canada, breakfast is included at some hotels, as stated. 12 No meals are included at the UWO. The all you can eat Blackhawk cafeteria serves excellent choices for breakfast, lunch and evening meal. There are also several other dining options and bars located around the halls of residence and on Wittman Field. In-flight meals when included within the cost of the air ticket form part of the tour price, however some airlines (primarily European carriers) now only serve refreshments for which they charge accordingly. Health Requirements There are currently no known mandatory or recommended precautions required for travel to the USA or Canada. However, we strongly recommend that you consult your local doctor or health centre for the latest information. Climate and Dress The weather should be warm and sunny during our visit with temperatures in the mid to high 80ºsF in the USA; slightly less hot in Canada. Travel Insurance For citizens of the United Kingdom, can provide competitive and comprehensive insurance cover for the duration of your tour. However, if you do not wish to take out our insurance, you must ensure that comparable or greater cover is taken. The number of your Insurance Policy should be written, if known, on your Booking Form at the time of making the reservation, but no later than the date when final payment is due. A copy of the policy must be forwarded to. Individual insurance policies are arranged through CoverMore Insurance Services Limited; the premiums for which will vary according to your circumstances. Full details are available on request. The Policies for the USA also include cover for non-scheduled flights, i.e. pleasure flights, where the aircraft is licensed and insured to undertake such flights, and where a payment is made. Wheelchair Assistance at Airports Anyone requiring wheelchair assistance at airports must have this service requested and confirmed in advance. Airlines and/or airports can no longer provide this service without prior confirmation, therefore, please annotate your booking form accordingly. Electric Mobility Scooters EAA Oshkosh A limited number of electric mobility scooters and golf carts are available for rental. Details available on request. Flexible Itinerary We are very happy for enthusiasts to take time away from the printed itinerary to pursue their own interests during multi-day stays in the same place, so long as they inform the Tour Manager. It will be the individual s responsibility to ensure that they re-join the group in the hotel at the stated time on the day of departure. Land Only Price For enthusiasts who would prefer to join the tour in the USA (instead of flying from the UK with the main group), we would be pleased to quote a Land Only price. This price does not include any flights whatsoever and you are strongly advised to contact us before making your own flight arrangements in the event that there has been a change to the published itinerary. This is particularly relevant where travel on domestic flights forms part of your individual itinerary. Please note that the Land Only price is based on you meeting the tour at the hotel at Minneapolis/St Paul Airport and does not include the airport-hotel transfers. On the optional extension to Oshkosh the transfer from the UWO to Chicago O Hare Airport is included. Flight Timings & Connecting Travel Arrangements to Departure Airport All flight departure and arrival times are correct at the time of preparing each itinerary, however, airlines may change these times with little or no prior warning. In practice such changes are only a few minutes either way and the final itinerary will show the actual times. Clients making their own arrangements to get to the departure airport by air, rail, coach etc., should bear the above in mind if purchasing nonrefundable or non-changeable tickets. cannot be held responsible for any changes to flight times, and any privately arranged travel tickets to the airport becoming invalid.
