The 4-day CAF event started the month off with all kinds of WWII aircraft on the ramp and in the air. It was fun to be cleared number 4 to land in my C170 behind a B17, a B25, and a Beech18. The weather threatened to rain on our picnic on the second weekend, but it held off to provide a nice time to enjoy some burgers and hangar flying with the 30 or so hungry pilots that came by. Last weekend was hard for most to decide which event to attend. Our local EAA chapter had the annual chili cook off contest at McKinney, the Alliance Airshow, the last weekend of the state fair, or the 16th annual Cedar Mills Seaplane Splash-In, which I attended. The Dallas FAA guys mentioned that they moved to new offices at Alliance, consolidated with FAA people from two other offices, reorganized under a new manager, then promptly were put on furlough for the government shutdown all on the same day. The weather guessers think it may rain this weekend, not that it would not be a bad thing, but why do they forecast it to rain on the weekend? It can rain all it wants to on Monday! I hope you have time to get out and enjoy one of the many Texas fall aviation events! See you around the airport Calvin Flightlines Texins Flying Club Newsletter Page 1

2 TFC FALL PICNIC The morning started off pretty cloudy but the skies cleared up and we had a pretty good turnout. We heard some great stories about mountain flying and landing seaplanes. Oh, and next time you see her, ask T. Marbach about her first solo cross country flight, that s a pretty cool story as well. Flightlines Texins Flying Club Newsletter Page 2

3 By Charles Galles AIR POWER EXPO - THE CAF AT MCKINNEY On Oct 3-6 McKinney airport was filled with some beautiful planes from a bygone era. The commerative air force brought some flying bombers include FiFi, the only remaining flying B-29 in the world. Quite a few members of TFC were out there on the flight-line as volunteers. 4 TRIP REPORT - WESTHEIMER AIRPORT, NORMAN, OK From Michael Verworn Thinking about venturing up north to see a football game at OU? Max Westheimer airport (KOUN, 338º, 131.5nm) is right next to campus. I flew up there earlier this month with a couple of friends. There's definitely some traffic on gameday. You will see lots red shirted OU fans. The local FBO does a really good job and they always have somebody at the ramp to flag you down, then you follow them to a spot. Make sure you keep your eyes open for them. It's fun to have somebody giving hand signals to tell you to go right/left/stop/etc., as if you're one of the big planes. The restaurant in the terminal (Ozzie s Diner) is wellknown, even the locals come there & I ve never had a chance to eat there because the line is always out the door. The tower does not come online until 8 am, so if you're there early you'll have to make radio calls on the way in. As far as transportation goes, the campus bus system (CART) provides a shuttle to campus from the airport. You can also rent a car but traffic is pretty crazy - they shut down many of the streets & it's obviously a mess of traffic. Leaving the plane overnight isn't a problem as long as you fill gas. I usually fill anyway, but be prepared for a rate comparable to McKinney. No matter how smooth the air, you will always feel a bump as you cross the Arbuckle mountains halfway up. On the way out, I've not had a problem reaching flight services to open the flight plan before you've climbed very high. When I left last weekend, the tower handed me off really quick. Some peripheral drama to my latest trip was that when the wives found out my two friends were coming in a small plane, they said no way. I told my friends I was going anyway, so if they changed their minds I'm departing 6:30am with or without them. So at 6:15 I got the call that they were on the way to the airport. One wife found out they went when he called her in Norman 2 hours before he was supposed to arrive (takes 3 hours to drive, one to fly). She put two & two together & he got an earful. The second wife found out when the first posted her disgust on facebook. Thanks, Michael! Aviation story to share? Send it to Charles Galles, c.f.galles@ieee.org Flightlines Texins Flying Club Newsletter Page 4

For those of you unaware, the FAA has a pilot proficiency program (called WINGS) in place to assist with proficiency in flying. The benefit of this program, besides making you a safer pilot, is that for each phase of the WINGS program completed, your Flight Review is extended by 24 months from the end of the month from which you completed the phase. In addition, the Texins Flying Club offers one month of free dues for each WINGS phase completed (up to a $45 value) In order to complete a phase, generally, the pilot needs to complete 6 credits. Three knowledge credits taken either online or in a classroom, and flight credits, in a plane with your CFI. Completion of WINGS courses not only counts as an FAA Flight Review, but also counts as a TFC Annual Review along with the discount on dues for the month following completion.
