1 Overview Follow up meeting of the 1st Pan-African Aviation Training Centers The 1 st Pan-African Aviation Training Centers Coordination Conference was held in Niamey, Niger, th February A follow-up meeting is organized jointly by the ICAO AFI Comprehensive Implementation Programme (ACIP) and the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC). It is in response to the recommendation of the Special African Air Navigation Conference (SP/08 AFI RAN, November 2008) which requires ACIP and AFCAC to assess the aviation training needs and available resources in Africa with a view to harmonizing and standardizing the various training programmes and improving coordination between training centers in Africa to meet the African continent needs. A special emphasis would be put on safety related training requirements and capabilities. The ICAO Audits and assessments from other industry organizations have revealed that throughout Africa, there is a lack of qualified personnel in such crucial areas as safety management and oversight, security management and oversight, accident investigation, operations & maintenance of aviation facilities & equipment, air traffic management, airlines & airports management and operations. At the same time, there is a large number and variety of training programmes and institutions in Africa offering training courses on aviation related subjects. However, the courses are not standardized continent-wide and cooperation between African Aviation training institutions is limited. This meeting intends to bring together Training institutions to assess the training needs and capabilities of the aviation industry in Africa and initiate the development of a coordinated training policy with standardized courses and appropriate quality control system. It is expected to set up a formal follow-up coordination mechanism between aviation training institutions throughout Africa and launch the process of developing a master plan for harmonization of aviation training in the AFI Region. The meeting is kindly hosted by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) and sponsored by SITA. It will be conducted in English and French. Location The Gordon Institute of Business Science 26 Melville Road Illovo, Johannesburg, South Africa Duration: 2 days. Registration fee: NONE Language: English/French
