1 Official Publication of Airventurers, a Non-Profit Pilot s Association Volume 53, No. 8, Aug N O D I N N E R M E E I N G 2013 IS MORE THAN HALF OVER. THAT LEAVES LESS THAN 5 MONTHS TO NOT ONLY FINISH OUT THIS YEAR, BUT TO PLAN FOR NEXT YEAR. I N A U G U S T but AUGUST 11TH IS OUR PICNIC IN SANTA BARBARA/ GOLETA EVERYONE S WELCOME What's to plan? 1. How about fly-ins? Should we have them every month or 6 times a year?. Should they be near or far? Should they be inexpensive or not? Where do you want to go? 2. How about dinner meetings? Monthly or every other month? 3. How about board meetings? Monthly or every other month? 4. How about flying to lunch after board meetings? Should we forget about it due to lack of participation or just have them a few times during the year? 5. How about the holiday party? This year s is set but next year needs to be looked at. 6. How about reducing the requirements for membership? Attending one dinner meeting as a guest and co-hosting another dinner meeting plus cohosting a fly in should be enough. 7. How about members stepping up to fill the officers, directors and chairman positions? Will you help? It's your club. Your participation is requested. It begins now by your ing me your comments and suggestions regarding the above topics. We will discuss them at the next board meeting on August 24. Mark your calendar and attend if you can. Marv BOARD MEETING Aug.24th with a VFR fly-in to Santa Maria To reach the editor: judyrifkin1@charter.net we d like to hear what you have to say

5 FAA SENDS LETTER TO PILOTS RE: MEDICATIONS The FAA is sending a letter and fact sheet to all U.S. pilots to make them aware of the potentially negative effects that certain types of common over-the-counter and prescription drugs could have on the safety of flight. Specifically, the FAA notes the "sedative effects" caused by "many medications" and the ability of some medications to cause cognitive impairment. It also emphasizes the "subtle degradation of the ability to competently evaluate actual IM- PAIRMENT [sic] caused by some medications. According to the FAA, medications that are prohibited by the agency are found to be a factor in roughly 12 percent of fatal GA accidents. Along with those warnings, the FAA also offers guidance. The letter lists four ways that pilots can reduce the risk of being impaired by medication. It asks pilots to educate themselves by reading documentation and asking their doctor about medications they are using, specifically with regard to their impact on the performance of complex tasks like flying. The FAA warns pilots not to fly until at least five maximal dosing intervals have passed. That translates to waiting 30 hours to fly after taking a medication that can be administered every four to six hours. The agency asks pilots to apply the illness, medication, stress, alcohol, fatigue, emotion checklist (IM SAFE) and step back from flying activities if the checklist suggests you may be distracted or impaired in your assessment or decision-making due to use of any medication. Finally, it reminds pilots that expert guidance is available from designated FAA Medical Examiners. Claudio Losacco, Safety Officer Tony Albany, Joel Kirschner, Yoni Boujo and Marv Rifkin went to the July 13th Safety Seminar in Long Beach

6 WHITEMAN (WHP) - Obstacle Departure Procedure, (ODP) Pilots executing incorrect IFR departure procedures out of Whiteman (WHP), CA. have resulted in numerous Pilot Deviations. To help prevent these deviations, pilots are reminded that IFR aircraft flying the Whiteman (WHP) Obstacle Departure Procedure, (ODP) should ALWAYS be OUTBOUND" on the VNY R-325 as they climb to 4,500 ft. prior to turning left direct VNY VOR/DME. It is imperative that pilots follow the established WHP Obstacle Departure Procedure, (ODP) to avoid higher terrain.
