1 Official Publication of the Airventurers, a Non-Profit Pilot s Association Volume 49, No. 11, Nov Disappointingly, sometimes things don t go the way we would like. This happened to me and it relates to our group. A few days ago, I sent out an request for any ideas or any connections anyone had for a speaker for our November brunch meeting. I guess I was naïve, because I believed maybe a few of our over sixty members would respond with some ideas or, better yet, with a person to do the job. However, that was not the case. I received one containing some ideas, and that was it. I was truly dismayed at such a minimal response. I thought for sure this would be an opportunity for someone to present a speaker they had always wanted to hear. Airventurers is a wonderful organization because of one thing the people who are the Airventurers! As president I try to bring to all of our activities a high level of enthusiasm. Please join me in that enthusiasm and do whatever you can to participate in anyway that you feel comfortable. If you can just make it to one fly-in a year, do it. If you can only attend a few dinner meetings, then that s great and better than none at all. If you are asked for minimal support and guidance by simply responding to an , then hit that keyboard and start typing. All I am saying is do what you can but please don t be silent with your voice or your actions. I have a couple of ideas up my sleeve for the near future. A few of our members are into remote control airplanes and have educated me regarding how this hobby has changed. Are you ready for this? They now have pure jet RC models that travel faster than 200 knots and can cost up to $20,000 (that s the cost of an old Cessna 150). These jets are going to be at the Sepulveda Basin on November 29. It s a free event and, if I can work things out, we will have tables and chairs for our group and a free lunch, Kentucky Fried Chicken, provided my me! I am also working on free demo rides in the Flight Design light sport aircraft. I have flown the plane, and it is FUN, very responsive, 1000 FPS up with two aboard, and fast at 120 knots at 4 gallons an hour. However, all of that is truly irrelevant; what is magical about this plane is the fact that if you can no longer pass a 3 rd class medical (and you have never been denied a medical), then you can fly this. These demo rides will be scheduled soon and will take place in front of my hangar at VNY. The plane and demo pilot will be supplied by Flight Design. There is a lot happening at the old Airventurer hangar, so check your updates, the Flyer and our website. See what looks interesting, get off your tushes and have some fun with your friends. The enthusiasm of a few member is not (Continued on page 2) BRUNCH MEETING Saturday, Nov. 21st Carrow s Ventura Blvd. 10:00am Order What You Want Separate Checks PLEASE RSVP on the Web click on Dinner Meetings and fill out the form or call Yoni Boujo or N78YB1@gmail.com by Wednesday, Nov. 18th Our speaker will be Jim Barton giving a presentation on the Reagan s Ranch. THIRD TIME S THE CHARM! 30 Airventurers and friends flew (too many to name) and a bunch more drove out to Daggett for a fascinating visit to the Goldstone facility at Ft. Irwin on Oct. 17th. This was the best-attended fly-in of the year...if not the past several years. The ramp was filled with Airventurer airplanes. It was a beautiful sight! Thanks to Fred and Gail Heim who did a terrific job of arranging the events of the day, dealing with the inevitable little glitches with tact and good humor, to ensure that everyone had a wonderful time.

5 SAVE THE DATE Holiday Party December 5th This year s festive Holiday Party and Installation of Officers will once again be at the German-American Club in Santa Monica. There will be a quasi-open bar...each guest will receive 2 tickets for drinks of choice, hard or soft. We have chosen what we think will be an outstanding dinner Home-Made Hors d Oeuvres, Salad, Chicken Chasseur or Baked Sea Bass, both served with Vegetables and Sour-Cream Mashed Potatoes, topped off with a Decadent Dessert. (Indulge it s only once a year!) There will be complimentary wine on the tables and See s candy, just in case you need a bit more sugar. All this for only $40 per person. President Joel Kirschner will take this opportunity to thank all of the Board Members and Fly-In Hosts for contributing to another successful year of flying adventures, and to introduce the new officers for We have also put together a 15 minutes slide show of all the wonderful places Airventurers have gone to over the past 25 years...we think you ll enjoy it. Watch your mailbox in early November for your formal invitation, and please R.S.V.P. promptly. This will be a wonderful party, and we hope to see you all there. 5
6 Preflight RAIM Checks for non-waas GPS Receivers As of Sept. 28, pilots utilizing non-waas-equipped IFR GPS units under instrument flight rules (IFR) must perform a Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM) check as part of their preflight requirements prior to flying certain routes and procedures. The routes and procedures affected include: T routes (RNAV routes below 18,000 feet msl) RNAV Obstacle Departure Procedures (ODPs) RNAV Departure Procedures (DPs) RNAV Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STARs) Q routes (RNAV routes above 18,000 feet msl) GPS RNAV instrument approach procedures are not affected by this change because IFR GPS units automatically perform a RAIM check before beginning an approach. WAAS-equipped GPS receivers do not require a preflight RAIM check. However, pilots must still check WAAS notams to learn of any predicted outages. These notams are not included in a standard briefing and must be requested. Source: AOPA Hold the mayo? Not when it comes to astute pilots Running a marathon, grab a carbohydrate bar. Lifting weights, gulp a protein shake. But climbing into a fighter jet? Try butter-soaked lobster. That was the surprising finding of a new military-funded study that sought to figure out what types of foods were best for pilots if missions restricted when and what they could eat. University of North Dakota researchers tested student pilots and found that those who ate the fattiest foods had the quickest response times in mental tests. They also made fewer mistakes when flying in tricky conditions. Those on a high-carbohydrate diet came in a close second and high-protein dieters were third. Follow-up tests will begin this spring to determine how elements in the food and other factors affected the results. These aircraft can operate legally at non-towered airports. Also, pilots operating at non-towered airports may not have their radios set for the proper frequency. These pilots may be making great radio calls and since they hear no response, they think the pattern is clear and there is no other traffic. Just because you don't hear other traffic, doesn't mean there is none. Always look for other traffic at both towered and non-towered airports. 7
