KLEIN S CAMP (B,L,D) MAY 23 GRUMETI RIVER CAMP WESTERN SERENGETI TANZANIA This morning after our game drive and breakfast we will fly over the vast Serengeti to Grumeti. On arrival we will have lunch and enjoy a siesta before our afternoon game drive. CC Africa s Grumeti River Camp is situated in a remote valley in the western corridor of the Serengeti National Park, just 50 kilometres (31 miles) east of Lake Victoria Africa s largest lake. Flanked by two hillsides, this flamboyant camp overlooks a bywater of the Grumeti River and offers a comfortable haven from which to experience the truly wild side of Africa. Every year during Africa s annual Great Migration, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, zebra and other herbivores cross the Grumeti River, risking the jaws of some of the largest crocodiles on earth. Large pods of hippo grunt from their watery hideaway below the camp and black-and-white Colobus monkeys live in Grumeti s bird-filled riverine trees. At night, the nocturnal orchestra of owls and bush babies is punctuated by the primeval sounds of lion and hyena. One can almost feel the heightened adrenaline in the air as the annual feeding frenzy is underway. GRUMETI RIVER CAMP (B,L,D) MAY 25 MAY 26 GRUMETI RIVER CAMP WESTERN SERENGETI TANZANIA Today we enjoy another full day in the Serengeti searching for the Great Migration. Time is the greatest luxury in the bush and the Hippo pool in front of the lodge is always a great spot to see the action GRUMETI RIVER CAMP (B,L,D) NGORONGORO CRATER EASTERN SERENGETI TANZANIA This morning after our game drive we will travel overland to Ngorongoro Crater Lodge in time for lunch and a siesta before our afternoon activity. The Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is perched on the edge of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater at the eastern edge of the Serengeti in northern Tanzania. It lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which covers more than square kilometres (3,100 square miles) of pristine African wilderness. Inspired in design by the Maasai mud-and-stick manyatta (homestead), Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is without a doubt one of the most architecturally spectacular safari lodges in Africa. Nearly three million years old, the ancient caldera of the once volcanic Ngorongoro shelters one of the most beautiful wildlife havens on earth, ringed with towering walls and sheltering forests, grasslands, fresh springs and a large soda lake. Nearby Olduvai Gorge a famous early archaeological site is situated to the west of the Crater in the eastern Serengeti Plains. 3 MAY 27 NGORONGORO CRATER EASTERN SERENGETI TANZANIA Today after breakfast enjoy a full day in the crater in search of the resident species who never leave the crater floor including lions, black rhino, zebra, giraffe and flamingos. We will enjoy an elegant picnic lunch during our visit to the crater. NGORONGORO CRATER LODGE (B,L,D) MAY 28 NGORONGORO TO MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE, KENYA This morning after breakfast we will enjoy a leisurely morning admiring the spectacular views of the crater before checking out and proceeding by road to the Manyara Airstrip for our flight to Kenya. We will stop briefly at Kilimanjaro airport for customs formalites and then again in Nairobi at the Wilson Air Terminal before proceeding to the Masai Mara National Reserve in western Kenya. Box lunches and drinks will be provided. Immortalised through famous tales of olden day safaris, the Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the richest and most diverse wildlife areas in the world. Known as the spotted land to the Maasai, the reserve is home to a vast number of resident wildlife, as well as part of the annual phenomenon of the Great Migration. The migratory wildebeest, zebra, kongoni and topi join abundant elephant, hippo, buffalo, giraffe, lion and cheetah in the Mara. Leopard and serval are frequently encountered, while endangered black rhino can be found in the dense bush thickets. The Mara River is also famed for its enormous crocodiles, which lay in wait for the wildebeest and zebra during the excitement and drama of the migration. Six species of primates and over 450 birds add to the Mara s incredible natural diversity. The Masai Mara National Reserve is part of a huge conservation area that also includes the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in neighbouring Tanzania. With no fences or man-made barriers, wildlife can move freely throughout this area, constantly recreating an ageless natural cycle. 4 MAY 29 MASAI MARA GAME PARK, KENYA When the dawn chorus of birds and monkeys begins outside, a gentle knock on the door brings a morning tray of steaming coffee. Step out of your elegant tented suite onto the private deck outside and watch the bush around you come to life. The ensuite bathroom with its stone shower and warm wood furnishings prepares you for the day s adventure. An early morning game drive takes you into the great grasslands of the Masai Mara. The guide stops the vehicle and turns off the engine, and you sit in the midst of the limitless plains, simply scanning the vast horizon around you. Families of elephant graze on the edge of the forest, while a cheetah hunts for prey from the top of a jutting termite mound. As far as the eye can see, tens of thousands of wildebeest and zebra graze peacefully on the sweet, new grasses.
