It's Africa's highest mountain and an impressive sight. It forms the back drop to Amboseli National Park and the Chyulu Hills Wildlife Preserve in Kenya, and Arusha National Park in Tanzania. The surrounding area is known for some of the largest elephant tusks ever recorded. You can trek to the top of Kilimanjaro on one of two main routes, the Shira route and the Machame route. The Kilimanjaro Airport is serviced by international carriers, and it serves as a gateway to Tanzania's Northern wildlife highlights including Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti National Park. Arusha is a small safari town in close proximity to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Arusha Coffee Lodge Called the 'safari capital' of Tanzania, Arusha is the gateway from which many travelers visit the country's most renowned game reserves. This exclusive boutique hotel lodge has been designed around the farm s original plantation homes, radiating the warmth and invitation of the old colonial plantation homes historically distinctive to the coffee plantations. The Arusha Coffee Lodge accommodation consists of 30 plantation houses lavishly furnished, featuring a splitlevel living room area and a private deck patio. This primeval national park offers fertile wetlands, vast herds of buffaloes, flocks of water birds, plains game, hippos, elephants, lions and hyenas. Meet them all during game drives in open four-wheel-drive vehicles, or get personal on safari walks. Chada Katavi Katavi National Park, in the far west of Tanzania, is somewhere that even today, few people have been lucky enough to visit. Perhaps because of this, it feels untouched, almost like traveling back in time. The park centers on a series of wide flood plains, blond with waist-high grass in the early dry season, green and flooded like a mini Okavango after the rains. Connecting the main flood plains Ngolema, Katisunga, Katavi and Chada - is a network of fragile seasonal rivers. It is these rivers that form the focus of the game viewing for which Katavi is renowned during the dry season. Chada Katavi is comprised of six spacious safari tents with large shade windows to catch any passing breezes. The tents are set up on wooden platforms, with a veranda out front. Ensuite bathrooms adjoin on the side with safari-style bucket showers (hot water on demand) and eco-flush toilets. Water is a valuable resource in this area and its use is taken very seriously. In a clearing you'll find the dining tent and a library, both are comfortable little spaces to while away the hours when not in the midst of a safari adventure. Game drives in open 4WD vehicles, outstanding birding and viewing of big game and walking safaris are available at Chada Katavi. Who is head of the clan? Who is mating with whom? Within an hour or two of tracking from camp, you can be sitting with these great apes. Greystoke Mahale Greystoke Mahale sits on a pristine, white sandy beach overlooking the turquoise water of Lake Tanganyika, with the forested slopes of the 8,000-foot Mahale Mountains rising behind. There are still no roads in this area, only forest paths and tracks made by animals over the years. This, and the fact that the only practical way of reaching camp is by boat, add to the sense of seclusion. On arrival at Kangwena Beach, the main mess is the only structure to be seen and is therefore the focal point of camp. From the mess you can look out over the lake to the mountains of the Congo in the haze beyond. Guests rooms, or bandas, are tucked back into the forest line, so that the only view is of beach, and the lake beyond. The rooms are almost entirely made from sustainable materials sourced on Lake Tanganyika. All the wood was reclaimed from wrecked or retired dhows bought from villages along the lakeshore. Old fisherman s canoes are used as ladders and thatch from palm trees gathered outside the national park for the roofs. The bandas are all open-fronted, with heavy canvas curtains you can pull across if you choose. Each banda is unique, but all have a dressing room behind and then a short boardwalk to the bathroom with flush toilet, strong showers and hot and cold water on demand. The deck upstairs provides

6 the perfect place to spend an afternoon with a glass of wine and a good book. One of the key activities at Greystoke Mahale is chimp trekking. Most guests will see the chimps at least once in a three or four day stay, but a sighting is never guaranteed. Chimp trekking happens during every full day that spent at Greystoke. First thing in the morning, guests head into the mountains accompanied by guides and trackers. Once the chimps have been found, you will have one hour to watch them play, groom and forage on the floor around you. Aside from chimp trekking, enjoy numerous activities such as kayaking and fishing; hiking the forest paths; swim in waterfall pools; go for sundowners on the old wooden dhow; or just relax on the beach.
