responsible travel The environments we travel through are fragile. It is our responsibility as visitors to minimise the impact of our presence. World Expeditions were the proud recipients of the inaugural Australian National Travel Industry s Environmental Achievement award for our Responsible Travel Guidebook. This detailed guide to responsible and sustainable travel is provided to all World Expeditions clients before they travel. Please ask your consultant if you have not received your copy of our award winning book. Alternatively, you may like to download a copy from our website Responsible travel is fundamental to our style of travel. An important element of responsible travel is the welfare of vulnerable children found in the tourism setting. Unfortunately, over recent years tourism had been directly linked to an increase in the number of orphanages worldwide. World Expeditions does not support orphanage tourism, but rather we support community based initiatives that keep children out of institutions and with their family. We encourage you to research, read and learn about the complexities of visiting orphanages when travelling. Make sure your actions are well informed. We also discourage visits to schools, unless of course you are part of a group working on a community service project that is in place over a period of days. Fleeting visits, with little purpose other than to visit a school, disrupts the learning environment and brings the risk of strangers into the school grounds. A good way to check whether an activity is beneficial or not is to ask yourself whether it would be acceptable in your country? On this trip, you may be offered the opportunity to visit an orphanage and school. World Expeditions clients, and other passengers on this trip, will have the option to participate in the Papyrus Lake walk instead. year round. It is also particularly good for lion and cheetah sightings, as well as the most elusive of all big cats, the leopard. With lunch boxes provided we continue with game drives throughout the day, scanning the endless plains, spotting many animals and truly realizing just why this national park is so famous. In the late afternoon we drive back to the lodge for overnight. Accommodation: Kisura Kenzan Tented Camp or similar DAY 8 Speke Bay on Lake Victoria After breakfast we make our way to Lake Victoria. We pass through the villages of the Sukuma tribe, who grow ground nuts, sorghum and cassava as well as keeping livestock. Life carries on here simply as it has done for ages, but with a few poignant reminders of the 20th century. Some leisure time in the afternoon, or to possibly take a bird walk along the lake shore. Accommodation: Speke Bay Lodge or similar Approx. distance: 250 km Approx. driving time: 4-5 hours (including game drive speeds) DAY 9 To Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya This morning you have the opportunity to take part in a boat excursion to one of the local fishing villages, before we bid Lake Victoria farewell and continue our journey northwards across the border into Kenya. 6 trip grading Adventure touring These adventure tours visit remote areas of the world where facilities are often basic. Tours will often involve long journeys and rough roads. Sightseeing and optional day walks are often included and these days may involve up to 5 or more hours of physical activity on the gorilla tracking. To enjoy these adventures we suggest you are reasonably fit, healthy, have a moderately active lifestyle and have a positive attitude. The fitter you are for your trip, the more of a holiday it will be. The gorilla tracking will sometimes be quite strenuous and will involve following trails beaten through the forests. These trails are often wet, steep and slippery. * Suggested preparation: Two or three times a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour or more, for at least 3 months prior to departure. adventure travel By its very nature adventure travel involves an element of the unexpected. In remote and developing countries do not expect standards you are used to at home. Remote areas are sometimes unpredictable and itineraries may be altered. To get the most out of your adventure it is important that you are flexible, positive and eager to take on all the challenges that arise. If you are uncertain about your suitability for this trip we recommend that you speak with your consultant or travel agent. important note These trip notes represent the most current information for this itinerary, and may supersede any information in the current brochure, including but not limited to the itinerary and price. 7 Travelling Times and Distances: All travelling times are affected by road conditions, border crossings, detours and weather conditions, therefore on certain days travelling times may be longer than anticipated especially where there is a lot of distance to be covered. Please keep in mind that the time it takes to travel 100 km in your home country is not equivalent to the time it takes to travel 100 km on African roads, therefore we encourage you to sit back and enjoy the spectacular scenery Africa has to offer. Where possible additional stops will be made to ensure your travelling comfort at all times. DAY 15 Fly from Arusha, Tanzania to Kigali, Rwanda After breakfast, you will be transferred by the hotel to the airport for your outbound flight to Kigali, Rwanda. Following Dian Fossey s work and David Attenborough s famous documentaries, the mountain gorillas have inspired travellers from all over the world to experience possibly one of Nature s greatest interactions. Anyone who has witnessed the mountain gorillas of East Africa will strongly agree that it is a once in a lifetime experience that will never be forgotten. Tonight we will sleep in a comfortable lodge in the foothills and prepare for our gorilla tracking the following day. Accommodation: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge or similar Approx. distance: 100 km Approx. driving time: 2-3 hours DAY 17 Gorilla Trek Today we will trek deep into the forest in search of these mountain gorillas. It is also particularly good for lion and cheetah sightings, as well as the most elusive of all big cats, the leopard. 11 DAY 10 Serengeti We have another exciting day of exploring the Serengeti National Park ahead of us. Famed for its annual migration, the Serengeti offers amazing game viewing at any time of the year: herds of buffalo, groups of elephant and giraffe, zebra, eland, topi, kongoni, impala and gazelle, among other wildlife. With lunch boxes provided we continue with game drives throughout the day, scanning the endless plains, spotting many animals and truly realizing just why this national park is so famous. In the late afternoon we drive back to the lodge for overnight. Accommodation: Kisura Kenzan Tented Camp or similar DAY 11 Speke Bay on Lake Victoria After breakfast we make our way to Lake Victoria. Accommodation: Speke Bay Lodge or similar Approx. distance: 250 km Approx. driving time: 4-5 hours (including game drive speeds) DAY 12 To Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya This morning you have the opportunity to take part in a boat excursion to one of the local fishing villages, before we bid Lake Victoria farewell and continue our journey northwards across the border into Kenya. Here we head to the Masai Mara, the traditional land of the Maasai people, who are permitted to graze their cattle in this area. The Masai Mara covers an area that includes the riverine forests along the banks of the Mara and Talek Rivers, acacia forests and the open plains of the savannah. Accommodation: Mara Eden Safari Camp or similar Approx. distance: 270 km Approx. driving time: 6-8 hours (border crossing dependent) DAY 13 Masai Mara game drive Today we spend the whole day game viewing in the world famous Masai Mara National Park. Here the various habitats are home to a great variety of game including lion, leopard, cheetah, zebra, wildebeest (gnu), giraffe, buffalo, jackal, topi, gazelle, impala and elephant. Hippopotamus and crocodile are also plentiful in the rivers and the bird life is very abundant. Accommodation: Mara Eden Safari Camp or similar DAY 14 To Nairobi After breakfast we head off towards Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. We have the afternoon at leisure or to explore the city. Time allowing, we visit the Kazuri Beads Centre and workshop for those interested in shopping. Kazuri means small and beautiful in Swahili and it describes each striking ceramic bead which is shaped by hand by the women employed at the Kazuri workshop. Nairobi World Expeditions Travel Group - Automated Import 5/31/2016 1:42:29 AM

is a cosmopolitan, lively and interesting city. Its central business district is nicely compact and it is therefore a great place to tune into modern urban African life. Later in the afternoon, we head to the hotel for dinner and overnight. Accommodation: Eka Hotel or similar Approx. distance: 280 km Approx. driving time: 5-6 hours DAY 15 Fly from Nairobi, Kenya to Kigali, Rwanda After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your outbound flight to Kigali, Rwanda. NOTE - The flight from Nairobi to Kigali is not included in the tour cost. On arrival at Kigali airport, you will be met by our Rwandan guide and transferred to our hotel in Kigali. The rest of the day is at leisure. Kigali, with population of more than 1 million (2012), is the capital and largest city of Rwanda. It is situated near the geographic centre of the nation. The city has been the economic, cultural, and transport hub of Rwanda since it became the capital at independence in The main residence and offices of the President of Rwanda are located in the city, as are the government ministries. Accommodation: Lemigo Hotel or similar meals: B DAY 16 Kigali city tour and drive to Musanze (previously named Ruhengeri) This morning we will take a short city tour of Kigali including a visit to the genocide museum, a poignant and moving tribute to the hundreds of thousands of victims of the 1994 massacre. From Kigali we will travel to Musanze (previously named Ruhengeri) at the foot of the beautiful and pristine Volcanoes National Park. Along the way a visit to an ex-poachers village makes an interesting stop. The Musanze (previously named Ruhengeri) region is where Dian Fossey amazed the world with her research of the magnificent mountain gorillas of Rwanda. While gorilla tracking you will be accompanied by a guide and usually two trackers, and allowed no more than one hour with your allotted gorilla family. To find your family group the guide will lead you to where the gorillas were sighted on the previous day and then literally track them through the forest. The terrain is very rough, often over steep slopes covered with matted vegetation. Be prepared for rain, mud and giant stinging nettles long trousers, gloves and a waterproof jacket will help. It will be necessary to take your own water and snacks eg: biscuits or sweets with you in case you have to trek for a while before finding the gorillas. The treks can be as short as half an hour and as long as eight hours, but three World Expeditions Travel Group - Automated Import 5/31/2016 1:42:29 AM

hours is the average. Please remember that Mother Nature is unpredictable, and no gorilla or golden monkey sightings can be guaranteed. Under no circumstances are refunds given if you do not see these primates. (PLEASE NOTE: Days 17 & 18 may be swapped around depending on gorilla permit availability). Accommodation: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge or similar DAY 18 Golden Monkey trek, to Kigali Today we track the equally rare and endangered Golden Monkey, unique to this region of East Africa and the Volcanoes National Park. There is a troupe numbering about 40 primates in the region we visit. Little is known about these rare and beautiful monkeys and experts are only recently able to put together the basic details about their routines and lifestyles. They can be quite difficult to spot. With our expert local guides and trackers we search for them in the thickets of bamboo where they like to spend most of their time. After our trek, we drive from Volcanoes National Park back to Kigali for overnight. (PLEASE NOTE: Days 17 & 18 may be swapped around depending on gorilla permit availability). Accommodation: Lemigo Hotel or similar Approx. distance: 100 km Approx. driving time: 2-3 hours meals: B,L DAY 19 In Kigali, trip concludes Group arrangements conclude in Kigali with a departure transfer to the airport. Almost 2 million animals roam the plains of East Africa, but it can be surprisingly hard to find them in the vast area that they cover, as their movements are governed by the rains and predicting their location can be a gamble. We designed this itinerary to include all the areas frequented by the migration on their annual route. A brief outline of the migration movements From December to April the migration spreads out over the Southern Plains of the Serengeti. Depending on the rains they move from the Gol Kopjes in the East to the Moru Kopjes in the west. This area is easily accessible from the centrally located Seronera. (We stay in the Kisura Kenzan Tented Camp) World Expeditions Travel Group - Automated Import 5/31/2016 1:42:29 AM

Between May and August the migration slowly moves through the western corridor and into the Ikoma and Grumeti Wildlife Management Areas. These areas are outside of the Serengeti, but as there are no fences the wildlife can, and do, move around freely. From September to end of November, during the short rains, the migration crosses into the Masai Mara in Kenya. This is a relatively small park compared to the vast Serengeti and the wildlife tends to be very concentrated. (We stay at the Mara Eden Safari Camp to take advantage of its proximity to the migration and not to mention its own private entrance gate to the park.) TANZANIA This is the largest country in East Africa, being almost 950,000sqkm in area and made up mainly of a dry highland plateau, with a narrow strip of low lying coast and the offshore islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia. The Great Rift Valley, containing some of the world s most magnificent and famous game reserves, sweeps down into Tanzania from Kenya and is covered by many inland lakes. Tanzania s highest mountains Meru and Kilimanjaro (also Africa s highest) lie on or close to the Kenyan border in the north of the country. With a heritage of British and German colonialism, and the strong influence of the Portuguese and Arab traders along the coast, Tanganyika gained its independence in 1961 and merged with the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba to become Tanzania. Being guided very much by its president, Nyerere, for twenty years, Tanzania launched into a radical socialist experiment in self reliance. With little Western aid, however, and as one of the world s poorest countries, its experiment had little chance of success. Today Tanzania is still largely agricultural and depends very much on tourism for economic survival. The population of more than 25 million includes over one hundred different tribal groups. The majority of the people are Bantu, but Arabic features and cultural traits show up throughout the coastal and island communities. The Masai inhabit the north of the country; although they no longer hold the large areas they once did and are found across the larger national parks and game reserves. KENYA Although lying on the Equator, Kenya is blessed with a varied landscape. The landscapes, range from vast desert land in the north, through the forest and snow capped central regions of Mount Kenya, to the grassy plains and savannah in the south to the humid coastline. The Great Rift Valley runs the length of the country and is home to an amazing selection of animals. Kenya s economy is largely agricultural and its main exports are tea and coffee, though tourism is a large provider of foreign currency. Kenya s population is over 30 million and is increasing rapidly. Most African people are either Bantu or Nilotic. There are also a distinct number of Somalis in the north east and Swahili people on the coast along with Indians, British and Europeans found in the cities. RWANDA Rwanda is a landlocked republic in Equatorial Africa. This small but beautiful country is situated on the eastern rim of the Albertine Rift, the western arm of the Great Rift Valley. With such a large proportion of the country being mountainous, most of the country is cultivated in hillside terracing. As the most densely populated country in Africa with more than 10 million people, Rwanda needs to utilize all its land where possible. Situated to on the watershed between the Nile and the Congo, the highest peak is Karisimbi (4,507m) in the volcanic Virunga chain protected by the Volcanoes National Park. The largest body of water is Lake Kivu, but there are other numerous lakes around the country. Primarily a subsistence agriculture economy, Rwanda nonetheless produces for export some of the finest tea and coffee in the world. Other industries include sugar, fishing and flowers for export. Rwanda has been known for the wrong reasons in recent decades with the terrible atrocities associated with the 1994 genocide. Since then the country is back on the road to recovery and still provides a safe haven for the mountain gorillas. climate TANZANIA World Expeditions Travel Group - Automated Import 5/31/2016 1:42:29 AM

Generally, April and May are the months of the long rains in Tanzania. November brings the short rains but it seldom rains all day at this time. As a general rule, Tanzania is warm by day and cool at night. Temperatures rarely rise above 27 C during the day or fall below 10 C at night, but these conditions are guidelines only and obviously vary with altitude and topography. On the coast, for example, temperatures can rise to around 30 C during the day and fall to about 20 C at night. KENYA The wet seasons in Kenya are generally March to May (long rains) and October to November (short rains). Downpours occur mostly in the late afternoons, the earlier part of the day being warm and sunny. Temperatures in Nairobi range from 11 C to 23 C in July and 13 C to 28 C in February. Nairobi and the highlands can get cold, especially in the evenings during July and August. RWANDA In Rwanda there are four discernible climatic periods long rains from March to early June; a long dry period from mid June to mid October; short rains from mid October to mid December; and the short dry from mid December to mid March. The average daytime temperature is 25 to 30 C and in the mountains this drops to a cool and refreshing 14 to 16 C. a typical day Depending on the itinerary for the day, we will either be travelling, sightseeing or game viewing. We will generally have an early breakfast to ensure we maximise our touring time. When staying inside the National Parks, we will generally wake with a hot drink at sunrise and commence our game drives with a packed breakfast. This allows us to maximise our time to see the animals when they are most active. Patience and persistence is required when searching for wildlife but the thrill of spontaneous encounters is unbeatable. We may return to our accommodation mid morning or stay out all day with a picnic lunch. After lunch, further game driving will take place or there will be leisure time for you to read and relax. Please see the Wildlife and Gorilla Tracking paragraphs in this document for more information. dietary requirements Provided we are advised in advance of your departure we are able to cater for vegetarian diets and can assist with medically recommended diets (allergies and intolerances). Please ensure you discuss your requirements with us well in advance (at least 1 month prior to your trip) to determine whether we can cater to such dietary requirements on your chosen adventure. Please note that options are likely to be limited in very remote locations or alternatives may be more expensive or unavailable. There may be times when those with special requirements may need to provide their own food. We are unable to guarantee a peanut free or allergen free trip, and therefore, we strongly encourage that travellers with life threatening or severe allergies take all necessary medical precautions to prepare for the possibility of exposure. Passengers must travel with all necessary medications for food allergies and be capable of self administering these medications. accommodation on the trip For this accommodated safari, we make use of mid range lodge accommodation.
