3 TANZANIA PHYSICAL RATING: Moderately challenging expedition. CULTURE SHOCK: A definite difference to what you are used to! ALTITUDE: The team may trek for periods above 4566m. VISA: Visa required for British nationals. DESTINATION FACTS RELIGION/S: Tribal Animist, Islam and Christianity. CULTURAL OR HISTORICAL INTEREST: Tanzania is home to 126 ethnic groups (Sukuma, Nyamwezi, Hehe and Bena, Gogo, Haya, Makonde, Chagga and the Nyakyusa being the largest). LANGUAGES: Swahili, English and many tribal dialects. GEOGRAPHY: Lowland savannah/grasslands punctured with glaciated mountains including Kilimanjaro and Meru. CLIMATE: Coast - hot and humid. 4 POSSIBLE EXPERIENCES At the Itinerary Development Day, with guidance from one of our destination experts, the team will be able to choose from options to finalise their itinerary. The choices may include the project they work with and where they go for some rest and relaxation! ADVENTURE Your acclimatisation trek to prepare you for Mount Meru will take you to the summit of Mount Longido. You will be accompanied by Maasai guides, giving you a superb insight into their lifestyle. Every step of the way you will be learning all about the environment. Be on the lookout for wildlife - the area is home to elephants and buffalo. You will also have the opportunity to spend time in a Maasai village; giving you a real insight into a completely different culture and way of life. Mount Meru is Tanzania s second highest mountain. The route to the summit takes you up through several different ecosystems where grazing cape buffalo, giraffe and warthogs reside under the watch of the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro. You will reach the crater rim around dawn on day three and continue to Meru s peak (4566m). The views are spectacular all the way to the summit - offering close looks at the crater s sheer walls, the ash cone, cloud formations and the surrounding park. Seeing Africa s wildlife in its natural environment is an unforgettable experience and Tarangire National Park gives you the chance to experience it all! Look out for lions, elephants, hippos and antelope roaming the park. Go on drive safaris - the only way to get to remote spots and learn all about the wildlife with the help of your Tanzanian guide. For some well-earned rest travel to the Indian Ocean town of Bagamoyo, where you can relax on pristine white beaches and reminisce about your amazing adventures in Tanzania! 5 PROJECT Mtumbi Secondary School is located in the Usambara Mountains in northern Tanzania. The school has at present and in much need of renovations to improve the conditions and provide the local children with a better education. The project is in its early stages and there is lots of work to be done including plastering, painting, making floorboards, renovating existing buildings and starting work on a new house for the teachers. You will work alongside skilled locals doing construction work and renovating the school. You will also have the chance to spend time helping in the school, playing football/netball games with the students and getting to know the local community. Throughout this project you will be camping in the village and preparing your own meals. This is an incredible opportunity for some real cultural interaction whilst really making a difference within the community. 5 outlookexpeditions.com

6 EXAMPLE ITINERARY The below itinerary has been created by our Expedition Planner as a guide. DAY 1 DAY 2-3 DAY 4 DAY 5-10 DAY 11 DAY DAY 15 DAY DAY 20 DAY DAY Depart the UK. Arrive in Dar Es Salaam and spend a day in Tanzania s largest city. Practise speaking Kiswahili while exploring the sights, smells and sounds of the local markets. Contact providers and purchase any provisions you require. Travel to the beautiful Usambara Mountains for your community project. Work with Mtumbi Secondary School - the school has limited facilities at present and is in much need of renovation. You could even help at a second school in the area, such as Mtae School. Drive overland across the northern plains to Arusha, a diverse and bustling city within the shadow of Mount Meru. Travel to Longido to experience walking through the African bush with local Maasai guides. Ascend Mount Longido and spend time in a Maasai boma after your descent, learning all about these amazing people. This is great acclimatisation for your main trek. Rest for a day and prepare for the big challenge ahead of you. Make your ascent of Mount Meru, the second highest mountain in Tanzania. This is a true test with views from the summit that will leave you breathless! Visit Tarangire National Park; a haven for wildlife including elephant, lion, zebra, giraffe, and hippo. Learn all about wildlife in this beautiful yet tough environment. Travel to Bagamoyo on the Indian Ocean, enjoy some well-earned relaxation on the white sandy beaches and celebrate the end of a successful expedition. Return to Dar Es Salaam and say goodbye to Tanzania. Catch your flight back to the UK for your homecoming. Due to the changing nature of the world over the build up period, Outlook may be required to change aspects of, or the order of the itinerary. 8 HOW TO LAUNCH YOUR EXPEDITION We hope you have decided that this is the expedition for your school or group. To launch all you need to do is follow these steps: CONTACT YOUR REGIONAL MANAGER Discuss convenient dates for us to come and run an assembly and information evening. Once these dates have been agreed you will be assigned a School Account Manager. They will become your point of contact at Outlook from now until after your return from the expedition. PRESENTATION AT YOUR SCHOOL We will run an assembly presentation for your students and an information evening for students and parents at your school or venue.
